Description: A close-up depiction of the southern Magnolia Grandiflora blossom. Hand-painted and signed by artist Teresa Bernrd.

Artist Comments

This painting is of the Magnolia Grandiflora, commonly known as the southern magnolia or bull bay. These large, showy flowers grow on trees native to East Texas and several other southern and southeastern states. The trees have large, glossy leaves and huge, fragrant white blossoms. Their sweet-smelling flowers are considered an emblem of feminine sweetness and beauty.

Magnolias are often a favorite subject matter for many artists. They are certainly a favorite flower of mine. I was drawn to how the light hit this Magnolia’s pedals and immediately knew I wanted to do a painting of this magnificent flower.

Some Interesting Things to Know About Magnolias

    • After planting, it can sometimes take up to 10 years for a Magnolia tree to bloom.
    • Magnolias bloom from April to June.
    • Southern Magnolia blossoms grow between 8 and 12 inches.
    • Magnolia blossoms grow at the end of the tree’s branches.
    • The fragrance of the Magnolia flower has a pleasant scent that resembles the smell of tropical fruit.
    • The dense foliage and shallow roots make it very difficult to grow grass under its shade.
    • Its root system will crack sidewalks and pavements if planted too close to them.
    • Magnolia trees require plenty of space as they can grow up to 40 ft. wide and 80 ft. tall.
    • Both Louisiana and Mississippi claim the Magnolia as their official state flower.

Description: A realistic painting depicting the wildlife of Africa. This specific painting is of an African bull elephant. Hand-painted and signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

As an artist, I’m always looking for good reference photos to paint from. Taking lots of photos myself is one way I get them. Others like to give me their photos to use as well. Using resources like this to paint from is something many artists do when they paint. Other artists like to paint on location but will still take a photo of the scenery to take home. They use them to finish up their painting when they are back in their studio.

Several years ago, some acquaintances of mine went on an African safari. While there, they snapped a photo of an elephant and emailed it to me. They thought I might like to use it as a resource photo for a painting of an African elephant. And they were right! I liked it so much I painted it.

Some Interesting Facts About African Elephants

African elephants are native to Africa and are the world’s largest land animals. They are distinguished by their massive flapping ears and ivory tusks. The fact that these animals are hunted for their ivory tusks and that their natural habitat is shrinking has contributed to their inclusion on the endangered species list. They are, in fact, one of Africa’s most endangered species. In the 1980s, around 1 million African elephants roamed Africa’s plains; today, the total population is less than 470,000.

Artist Comments

In 2006 my husband Robert retired from the US Navy, and we returned home to Texas after being away for over 20 years. Of all the places we could have chosen to live, we decided to settle in the East Texas region. East Texas is a lovely place to call home because of its lush green vegetation, vast rose gardens, Texas Longhorn cattle ranches, hay growers, working farms, rodeos, and the many small country towns and communities. In this setting, we chose to build our little ranch approximately 20 miles west of Tyler.

Tyler, Texas is known as the “Rose Capital of the U.S.A.” because this area alone produces over 20% of the nation’s roses. This city also has the nation’s most extensive municipal rose garden, is home to the Tyler Rose Museum, and hosts the Texas Rose Festival every year in October. The festival draws more than 100,000 visitors to the city each year.

When we first moved here, I was inspired to paint this rose painting because we were surrounded by many beautiful roses. Roses are my favorite flower! Their delicate beauty and fragrant scent appeal to me. And red roses are my favorite. They have such a vibrant color.

Roses come in so many different varieties of color and are widely recognized as a symbol of love, sympathy, or sorrow, depending on the rose’s color. For example, a red rose symbolizes love, a yellow of friendship, an orange of enthusiasm, white purity, and pink joy.

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale.

About this Portrait Painting of Tera

Title: Portrait of Tera
Size:
16″ w x 20″ h
Support: Traditional-Style Stretched canvas
Description:  Portrait painting of Tera sitting in a library. Hand-painted on quality stretched canvas and signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This is a portrait painting of my daughter Tera. I painted it using her high school senior portrait as a reference photo. However, the background in the painting is an entirely different setting than what was used in the photo. When I did her painting, Tera was attending college and studying to become a librarian, so I chose a library setting for the background instead.

All through high school, Tera wanted to become a librarian and even worked after school and on weekends at a local branch of the public library. She loved books and reading and still does to this day. The background in her painting is of a fictional place and is not the library she was working at during high school.

This was a fun painting to do, and I took my time with it as I wanted everything to be just right. First of all, the subject matter is near and very dear to my heart. Secondly, it was both fun and challenging to paint all those books on the shelves. I captured a very good likeness of Tera with this painting; however, when I photographed it for my website, I realize my photography skills need some improvement!

Portrait of Tera is part of my private art collection and is not for sale. Someday it will be passed down to Tera as a family heirloom, but for now, it continues to hang on the wall in my living room.

“I’m a family doctor in a small town in northern Maine. I really love all your paintings. I’m so taken with the Peggy’s Cove painting – it’s so lovely. I grew up in Newfoundland where all the houses were painted a bright color to offset the grey weather that could otherwise be depressing. The red house and the ocean remind me of home. The painting brings a smile to my face.” — Janet B., Houlton ME

Artist Comments

This is a typical still life painting of bread, grapes, and wine,  elements often used by artists when painting a communion table still life. However, I added a few more objects to my rendition, a candle representing Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, and The Holy Bible, the Word of God.

God is a huge part of my life. I felt inspired to do some paintings which contain an inspirational message, and this painting is one of those. It depicts the bread and wine of communion and has special meaning to me.

Your Feedback

“I enjoy art-making and am presently working in soft pastel on still life subjects. I really enjoyed your Communion Table still life and am further motivated to continue to give God all glory in my work. Your work reminded me of special symbolism in still life about which I had forgotten. Thank you! God bless you.” — Tina, Australia

Artist Comments

This painting of the famous Garden Tomb is located in the Garden of Gethsemane near Jerusalem. It is one of two I’ve painted of this famous travel place. The other painting is called The Garden Tomb.

Christians worldwide consider this place to be the actual burial and resurrection site of Jesus and not the renowned Church of The Holy Sepulcher. His crucifixion occurred at Golgotha, the “place of the skull,”

The reason many believe this to be the site of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is that it so clearly fits the description described in each of the Gospel accounts.

Site of the Crucifixion

    • Skull Rock outside the city walls of Jerusalem
    • Near a gate of the city
    • Along a busy thoroughfare
    • At a place of public execution
    • At the place of the skull – Golgotha
    • A garden nearby

Evidence regarding the site of the tomb is in Matthew 27:57-60.

    • Skull Rock located in a garden
    • Belonged to a rich man named Joseph of Arimathea
    • Cut out of the rock
    • Sealed with a rolling stone
    • Entered through a low doorway
    • Burial chamber situated to the right of the entrance

For more information about this popular tourist place, check out this website.

About this Garden Tomb Oil Painting

9″ x 12″
Support: Traditional-style Stretched canvas
Description: An oil painting of a famous Israeli garden visited by many every year. It depicts the Garden Tomb at Gethsemane. Hand-painted on quality stretched canvas and signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This painting is of a rock-cut tomb situated in the heart of the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem; it is one of my personal favorites. Many Christians believe this famous Israeli location to be the burial and resurrection place of Jesus Christ after His crucifixion at Golgotha, the place of the skull. Being a devout Christian, this particular painting has a lot of personal meaning for me. It is one of two I’ve painted of this famous travel place. The other painting is called The Garden Tomb at Sunset.

The Burial and Resurrection of Jesus the Christ

“As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.” Matthew 27:57-60

“He is not here: for He is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” Matthew 28:6

SOLD: This ocean-view painting has been sold to a private art collector in Virginia.

About this Fisherman Painting

Title: Fisherman in a Red Rowboat
Size:
9″ w x 12″ h
Support: Canvas panel board
Description:  A seascape with a fisherman and a bright red rowboat. The small fishing boat is moored to a piling surrounded by a calm sea. The sky is cloudy and overcast.  Inside the boat, a fisherman holds a fishing rod, waiting for a fish to take his bait. The colors are vibrant and full of life in this piece, and its composition is serene and calming.  It makes an excellent gift choice for someone who enjoys fishing.

Fisherman in a Red Rowboat is a seascape painting composed on a quality canvas panel board, it will require a frame before it is displayed. Hand-painted and signed by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

Fishing is a popular recreation and pastime for those lucky enough to find the time to fish for the “big one.” I don’t particularly like to fish myself, I find it rather boring, however, I do have several friends who enjoy this sport. But this doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy painting someone fishing. I do!

I found this particular fisherman painting an interesting subject to paint with that red boat tied up to a piling. This is one of my earlier paintings and unfortunately, I don’t have a better photograph of it. It is so much more wonderful when viewed in person.

About this Painting of Horse Tack

Title: Barn Door with Horse Tack
Size:
12″ w x 9″ h
Support: Canvas panel
Description: A rustic painting of horse tack hanging from an old barn door.  The chain is rusty and the wood is weathered giving this painting its rustic feel. This painting would be ideal for a farmhouse or ranch house or anyone who loves horses and the countryside.

This is a painting composed on a quality canvas panel and does require a frame before it is displayed. Hand-painted and signed by realist artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This painting depicts a close-up composition that incorporates antique horse tack hung on an old barn door. This project was a study of texture. My goal with this piece was to make the wood look weathered, the chain look rusted, and the hinge look metal. I believe I accomplished what I set out to do, but there is always room for improvement in any project.
