One summer, my husband, Robert, and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was only two hours away from the OBX (Outer Banks). Currituck Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were excited to discover that visitors can climb its 220 steps to the top and look at the spectacular view. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse depicts the fun time we had on that trip.

About the Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay in Corolla, NC on the northern end of the “Outer Banks.” Its distinct unpainted natural red brick appearance contrasts with fellow lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, which are painted in striking black and white. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and is still being used today to light the dark stretches of the southern Atlantic coastline. Annually the lighthouse welcomes an average of 185,000 visitors.

I love country living! Years ago, a small caravan of covered wagons and horses with riders would make their yearly trek past our small ranch from a nearby township. Our own horses would race to the fence line to watch as others of their kind passed by, and our dogs would bark to alert us to the passing caravan. Unfortunately, today it no longer makes this journey. This “wagon train” was the inspiration behind this covered wagon painting.

Covered wagons and pioneers are some of the first things that come to mind when I think of the Old West. I love that sense of adventure and pioneering spirit that drove early settlers to pack up their family, mount a covered wagon, and move across the Great Plains to settle out West. They are indeed an icon of the American Old West.

Sisters in Lavender painting is one of my favorite works and was a joy to paint. The calm, serene, and tranquil feeling one gets viewing this artwork is particularly appealing to me. The figures in the composition are no one specifically, just two young ladies who could be sisters enjoying an afternoon in a vast field of lavender. I can imagine the scent of lavender wafting through the air, filling their noses with a sweet aroma as they stroll through the beautiful lavender, creating some treasured memories.

This painting is of a large white dog, possibly a Great Pyrenees. The Great Pyrenees has become one of my favorite dog breeds ever since Lobo, our Pyrenees mix, showed up at our door one day and decided to stay. Living out in the country as we do, means we get many strays who wander up to our door looking for a place to call home. We don’t know where they come from, but we never turn them away. We try to reunite them with their owner, if possible. If not, then we find them a new home or wind up adopting them ourselves. This artwork isn’t specifically of Lobo, but the dog portrayed in it sure does remind me of him.

The Great Pyrenees makes excellent family pets with their calm, devoted, and well-mannered disposition. They are very loyal to those they love and protect the family with their lives if need be. In addition, they make excellent guard dogs, especially around livestock.

The Great Pyrenees is a dog breed of great intellect having a mind of their own; loving to figure things out by themselves and are good at problem-solving. While this is a wonderful trait, it can create a bit of a challenge when it comes to training.

This is a very simple and uncluttered composition of hilltops. Simplistic or minimal composition paintings can sometimes have a calming effect on the viewer, as well as stir the imagination, which is one reason why I enjoy doing them on occasion. When looking at this painting, one has to wonder what lies beyond the next ridge. More trees, a herd of cows, a bevy of deer, or a flock of sheep? Viewers can let their imaginations run wild with this one.

I struggled to come up with a title for this painting. Every artist in the world seems to call their calla lily paintings by the same name. So, I kept looking for title ideas and ended up at the website of Georgia O’Keeffe, an American artist whose artworks have influenced me. She created several calla lily paintings, one of which she titled “Two Calla Lilies on Pink.” Her title became an inspiration for mine: White Calla Lilies on Blue.

The calla lily has always been one of my favorite flowers. I just love its beauty. It gets its name from the Greek word for “beautiful.” The calla lily has a bloom that resembles a trumpet. Did you know the most popular color of calla lily is white? The white calla lily symbolizes purity and innocence. It is also associated with faithfulness and holiness, which is a reason why you often see them used at Easter services and weddings.

I live in the country, and scenes like the one in this painting are common. They are always a source of inspiration and provide me with material for my paintings.

This painting was a fun one to do. While I was painting the fence post in a meadow of wildflowers, a similar painting came to mind that I had done some time ago. It had a fence post too. However, the fence post in that earlier painting was nestled in the snow. I titled it “Fence Post in the Snow.” Who knows if there will be another fence post painting in the near future.

I love flowers! I like painting them too, especially closeup and bathed in the warm sunlight. I’m always on the lookout for a beautiful flower to paint, and the King Protea flower is certainly one that inspires me. Its large, beautiful blossom made it a perfect subject for this flower painting.

About The King Protea Flower

The King Protea (pronounced “prō – dē – a”) became the national flower of South Africa in 1976. This plant, named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his form at will, is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, dating back 300 million years. Many varieties of protea can be found in South Africa, Australia, Asia, and parts of South America.
King Proteas, whose blossom resembles an artichoke, is the largest member of the Protea family. They can grow as large as 3-4 feet tall with flowers 8-10 inches in diameter. The blossom has a substantial white fuzzy center with pointy pink or white petals surrounding the center, along with leathery green petals that cradle the large, heavy blossom and a thick stem that supports it.
