Teresa Bernard, a landscape artist who specializes in oil paintings, has hand signed this art piece in the lower left corner.

Artist Comments

I painted the Devils Tower as an oil painting after returning home from a trip with my husband to South Dakota in 2016.  During this trip, we visited Devils Tower National Monument. The monument is a unique geological rock tower that rises above the grassy plains of northeast Wyoming. At the time, we were vacationing in Rapid City, South Dakota. Since the tower was within driving distance of our hotel, we could not pass up the opportunity to visit this “one-of-a-kind natural wonder.”

We could see Devils Tower from miles away as we made our approach to the national monument. Upon arriving at our destination, we drove through the 2.1 square mile park which surrounded the monument. We couldn’t help but notice the tower as it was the centerpiece of the park. It looked like a giant granite tree stump with a flat summit and fluted sides.

Devils Tower stands more than 867 feet from its base to the summit. It measures approximately 180 feet by 300 feet at the top and is about a mile in circumference at the base. There is a 1.25-mile hiking trail around the tower base that provided us with spectacular close-up views from all sides. There was another much wider 3-mile trail that also loops around the tower, but we didn’t take that one. We spent a better part of the day exploring and learning everything about the tower before heading back to the hotel. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone.

—Teresa Bernard

Why “Devils Tower” and Not “Devil’s Tower”?

In 1906, President Teddy Roosevelt declared Devils Tower America’s first official national monument. The monument was initially called “Devil’s Tower” (with an apostrophe), but due to a clerical error, the apostrophe was omitted and never corrected. To this day, it remains known as Devils Tower (without the apostrophe).

Artist Comments

This oil painting is part of a series of paintings about what life is like in the great state of Texas. Round hay bales are one of the most iconic images of rural America. These farm-fresh bales represent the hard work and dedication required to provide for our country.

Cattle ranchers abound here in east Texas, and since cattle and other farm animals need food, we also have a lot of hay farmers. Everywhere you go, if you don’t see cattle or horses grazing in a large pasture, you’ll most likely see hay growing there, or you’ll see hay that has been harvested and baled.

Hay farmers harvest their hay using equipment called balers. Balers can bale (package) hay in various ways — small rectangle bales, large square or rectangular bales, or large round bales. The large round bales can weigh anywhere from 800 to over 1,500 pounds! When they are that heavy, they have to be moved around with hay forks attached to tractors.

Many cattlemen prefer the round bales instead of small rectangle bales as they are less labor-intensive to store and transfer and easier to feed to their cattle. They place these large round bales inside hay rings so their cattle and horses can graze on them for days. However, small farms and ranches may still use the smaller rectangle hay bales since they have fewer heads of cattle to feed.

A teenage girl with a surfboard has gone surfing in this painting. This artwork is perfect for anyone who loves the beach.

A surfer girl clad in a blue jacket carries her white surfboard with orange stripes as she walks down a beaten path to the beach.  Her back is turned toward the observer allowing the viewer to decide the identity of the surfer. Artist Comments

‘Gone Surfing’ is a simple yet evocative phrase that captures the essence of escaping to the waves. It conjures images of sun-kissed beaches, saltwater spray, and the thrill of riding a board across the ocean’s surface. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a daydreamer, those two words encapsulate the freedom and adventure that await in the vast blue expanse.

When I was a young girl growing up in Texas, my family did not live anywhere near the coast. I’d watch reruns of TV shows and movies starring Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and other teen idols who surfed the waves, and I would daydream about the thrill of surfing myself. Had we lived near the beach, I might have been the teenage girl portrayed in this painting. Those days have passed, and I never learned to surf, but if I had…

I love lighthouses! While living on the east coast, I had the opportunity to visit several of them on the shores of the Outer Banks. I also enjoy painting them and have done so numerous times throughout my fine art career. Several of those paintings were of lighthouses I had visited while living nearby. There are, however, many others in this big world that I have yet to visit and hope to do so someday. One such lighthouse is the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. It is the subject of this painting.

—Teresa Bernard

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each lighthouse has its unique history, character, and architectural design and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.

On the sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Shifting sands and coastal erosion are major issues in the area. The coast is eroding at a rate of 4.9 feet per year.

The lighthouse ceased operating in 1968. Its buildings were then used as a museum and coffee shop for a number of years before being abandoned due to shifting sands. The small buildings were later demolished after being severely damaged by the sand pressure.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have fallen into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. The relocation is expected to ensure the lighthouse’s survival until at least 2060.

Artist Comments

This tractor tire painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. I like to give myself challenges from time to time. For this particular challenge, I wanted to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I believe I achieved that goal.

What I like best about this painting are the various textures present in the composition — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusted metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many interesting things going on in this painting; it was a lot of fun to paint!

This painting would be the perfect art piece for the man cave, especially if you love farm tractors or cars. I can imagine no one would have ever thought a tractor tire would be the focal point for a painting.

Artist Comments

‘Lightning Strikes’ painting is inspired my fascination for the weather. I love standing on my porch watching a storm roll in. I love watching lightning bolts flash across the sky. And I especially love the rainbow that appears after the storm, because it reminds me of God’s promise from long ago. (See the Scriptures below.)

Weather is a powerful, tremendous force, and when unleashed it can be very destructive. Do I enjoy the destruction that sometimes happens from all that power? No way, no how. But because of God’s covenant promise, the storm gives me a sensation that He is nearby and watching over me. I sense His presence and I am not afraid.

—Teresa Bernard

Genesis 9:12-16 (NASB)

12 God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations;
13 I have set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.
14 It shall come about, when I make a cloud appear over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud,
15 and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, then I will look at it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

A Favorite Poem About Trees

Song of the Trees

by Mary Colborne-Veel

We are the Trees.
Our dark and leafy glade
Bands the bright earth with softer mysteries.
Beneath us changed and tamed the seasons run:
In burning zones, we build against the sun
Long centuries of shade.

We are the Trees,
Who grow for man’s desire,
Heat in our faithful hearts, and fruits that please.
Dwelling beneath our tents, he lightly gains
The few sufficiencies his life attains—
Shelter, and food, and fire.

We are the Trees
That by great waters stand,
By rills that murmur to our murmuring bees.
And where, in tracts all desolate and waste,
The palm-foot stays, man follows on, to taste
Springs in the desert sand.

We are the Trees
Who travel where he goes
Over the vast, inhuman, wandering seas.
His tutors we, in that adventure brave—
He launched with us upon the untried wave,
And now its mastery knows.

We are the Trees
Who bear him company
In life and death. His happy sylvan ease
He wins through us; through us, his cities spread
That like a forest guard his unfenced head
’Gainst storm and bitter sky.

We are the Trees.
On us the dying rest
Their strange, sad eyes, in farewell messages.
And we, his comrades still, since earth began,
Wave mournful boughs above the grave of man,
And coffin his cold breast.

This poem is in the public domain.

Your Feedback

“I really do like it. What catches my eye is the brightness of the color you used sparingly to accent the leaves which draws the eyes around the entire painting. Not sure if that makes sense, but what I’m describing is a good thing. Well-done. :)” — @Who_Killed_SethRich, Gab

“Lovely. Just came back from rural Central Pennsylvania and this reminds me of the beauty we experienced there. ” — @Tglock34, TRUTH Social

“I don’t know how you make those trees so life-like, I can almost feel the breeze and smell them. Great work.” — @GrammaLiza, TRUTH Social
