Springtime Paintings — Capturing Nature’s Rebirth on Canvas

Celebrating the Spring Season in Art

Springtime paintings capture the essence of renewal and rebirth, reflecting the vibrant energy that comes with the Spring season. I often use a palette of fresh, bright colors to depict blooming flowers, lush greenery, and clear blue skies. The interplay of light and shadow in my paintings can evoke a sense of warmth and optimism, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature awakening from its winter slumber.

For me, springtime offers a wealth of inspiration. The season’s dynamic weather patterns, with sudden showers and bursts of sunshine, provide opportunities to explore different atmospheres and moods. Whether capturing a serene garden scene or a bustling park filled with people enjoying the outdoors, my springtime paintings celebrate the joy and vitality of life. They remind us of the beauty in everyday moments and the promise of new beginnings.

This painting’s small size makes it perfect for small spaces or areas with limited space. Artist Comments

I love flowers! I enjoy painting them too, especially closeup and bathed in the warm sunlight. I’m always on the lookout for a beautiful flower to paint, and the King Protea flower is certainly one that inspires me. Its large, beautiful blossom made it a perfect subject for this flower painting.

—Teresa Bernard

About The King Protea Flower

  • The King Protea (pronounced “prō – dē – a”) became the national flower of South Africa in 1976. This plant, named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his form at will, is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, dating back 300 million years. Many varieties of protea can be found in South Africa, Australia, Asia, and parts of South America.
  • King Proteas, whose blossom resembles an artichoke, is the largest member of the Protea family. They can grow as large as 3-4 feet tall with flowers 8-10 inches in diameter. The blossom has a substantial white fuzzy center with pointy pink or white petals surrounding the center, along with leathery green petals that cradle the large, heavy blossom and a thick stem that supports it. King Proteas typically bloom during the winter and spring (June to October).

Artist Comments

Flamingos are a favorite bird for artists to paint because of their brightly colored feathers, graceful S-shaped necks and stilt-like legs. For a long time, I’ve wanted to do a painting of a flamingo and I have finally accomplished it.

—Teresa Bernard

Did You Know?

    • Flamingos are one of the world’s most recognizable wading birds. They are found in freshwater and saltwater mudflats, lakes, coastal lagoons, and marshlands worldwide.
    • Carotene in their diet is what causes their feathers to become pink, orange, or red. It’s the same component that gives carrots their orange color and tomatoes red.
    • In the wild, the lifespan of a flamingo is anywhere between 20 and 30 years, but in captivity, they can live up to 50 years or longer. The oldest known flamingo reached the age of 83.
    • Flamingos lay only a single egg each year, and if something happens to it, they usually do not lay another one.
    • Chicks are born with gray or white fluffy feathers. It takes up to three years to develop their pink, orange, or red feathers.

This one-of-its-kind painting depicts a tightly cropped composition of a yellow garden cottage. The color scheme is bright and cheery, with yellow, pink, and white.

A landscape painting depicting the side view of a yellow garden cottage with a window framed in white trim. In the foreground, a white picket fence and pink flowers run across the front of the cottage. Artist Teresa Bernard signs this artwork in the bottom left-hand corner.

The Garden Cottage was painted by hand on a small-scale gallery-wrapped stretched canvas. Artist Comments

This painting’s composition is a close-up of the side of a garden cottage. I thought it would be interesting to crop out as much of the original scenery as possible so that the focus would be solely on a few elements—the window, siding, picket fence, and some flowers. This turned out really well. I’ve used this method before. Below are the other paintings in which I used a tight crop to achieve the desired effect.

Artist Comments

This insect painting is the second art piece in the Ladybug Series. I named it ‘Almost Perfect Camouflage’ because the red color of the ladybug blends in so well with the flower it sits on. A natural predator would have to look very close to see it.

Where did they get their name? Are all ladybugs female? What do you call a ladybug that is a male? How can you tell them apart? All great questions!

The term “ladybug” is the common name for Coccinellidae, a Latin word that means scarlet. In America, this insect is referred to as “ladybug,” while in Europe, it is known as “lady beetle” or “ladybird beetle.” Whether you call them ladybug, ladybird, or lady beetle, the name has its origins in an old legend from Europe during the Middle Ages.

—Teresa Bernard

The Legend of the Ladybug

Legend has it that pests were destroying the Europeans’ crops, so Catholic farmers began praying to the Blessed Lady (the Virgin Mary) for help. Soon afterward, they noticed tiny black and red beetles in their fields eating the unwanted pests. The crops remained remarkably unharmed by the infestation. The farmers attributed their good fortune to the tiny insects called “the beetles of our Lady.” The red color of the beetle represents Mary’s cloak, and the black spots her sorrows. Over time, these beetles were affectionately termed ladybugs.

Ladybugs come in both male and female varieties, and both sexes are called the same thing…”ladybugs.” It is hard to distinguish male from female ladybugs with the naked eye, although females are larger than males. And that is hard to determine unless they are next to each other.

This insect art is an original oil painting of a red ladybug. The painting is a bright and happy scene that beautifully captures the wonder of nature.

A close-up oil painting of a ladybug. The red insect is hanging on tight to a leafy branch. The composition is bright, colorful, and cheerful. It would be ideal for a child’s room or for anyone who has an interest in insects. This is one of two paintings in a series and is signed in the bottom left corner by insect artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This painting is the first of two in the Ladybug Series. I actually worked on both paintings simultaneously, i.e., Ladybug #1 and Ladybug #2. I painted the ladybug series on six-inch-by-six-inch canvases. For such a small creature, I felt 6×6 was a perfect size. I love ladybugs and had been wanting to paint one (or more) for quite some time.

I came across a good deal on some small canvases, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy 24 of them. When my shipment of 6×6 canvases arrived, I thought this was the perfect time to paint the ladybugs. Before these two particular paintings, it had been quite some time since I last painted on such a small canvas. It was a lot of fun, and it didn’t take any time at all to finish it.

—Teresa Bernard

Now About the Ladybugs!

Ladybugs, sometimes called ladybeetles or ladybird beetles, are wondrous little creatures! They most commonly come in red, yellow, and orange colors, which fade as the beetle gets older. Some species have black spots while others have black stripes and still others are a solid color with no markings. Their bright colors serve to warn birds they don’t taste good.

Surprisingly there are over 6,000 different species of this particular insect. They are beneficial insects because ladybugs eat other insects like aphids that often damage crops and garden plants.

The life cycle of a ladybug consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female ladybugs may lay as many as 1,000 eggs from spring to early summer, depending on the species. It usually takes four days for their eggs to hatch.

I saw this little caterpillar one day and thought it would be a fun painting to do. Its colorful stripes and long body is what caught my attention. Someday soon this little insect will transform into a beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly.

Some Interesting Facts about Caterpillars

Are caterpillars insects?
Yes. Caterpillars, like their parent butterflies or moths, are insects. The caterpillar’s only job is to eat. It can grow and expand its size more than 1,000 times while eating before metamorphosing into a moth or butterfly.

Caterpillars have twelve eyes.
A caterpillar has twelve tiny eyes called stemmata; six on each side of its head. One would think that a creature with so many eyes would have excellent vision, but not in this case. Their tiny eyes only aid in distinguishing between light and dark.

Caterpillars have a huge number of muscles in their bodies.
The muscles in a caterpillar far outnumber those in humans. A caterpillar has 4,000 muscles, while humans have 650. They rely on these muscles to move because they do not have any bones inside them.

Artist Comments

This painting is of a large white dog, possibly a Great Pyrenees. The Great Pyrenees has become one of my favorite dog breeds ever since Lobo, our Pyrenees mix, showed up at our door one day and decided to stay. Living out in the country as we do, means we get many strays who wander up to our door looking for a place to call home. We don’t know where they come from, but we never turn them away. We try to reunite them with their owner, if possible. If not, then we find them a new home or wind up adopting them ourselves. This artwork isn’t specifically of Lobo, but the dog portrayed in it sure does remind me of him.

Read more about how I painted this painting at ‘A Painting in the Making.’

A Few Fun Facts About Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrenees makes excellent family pets with their calm, devoted, and well-mannered disposition. They are very loyal to those they love and protect the family with their lives if need be. In addition, they make excellent guard dogs, especially around livestock.

The Great Pyrenees is a dog breed of great intellect having a mind of their own; loving to figure things out by themselves and are good at problem-solving. While this is a wonderful trait, it can create a bit of a challenge when it comes to training.

So, I kept looking for title ideas and ended up at the website of Georgia O’Keeffe, an American artist whose artworks have influenced me.  She created several calla lily paintings, one of which she titled ‘Two Calla Lilies on Pink.’ Her title became an inspiration for mine: ‘White Calla Lilies on Blue.’

The calla lily has always been one of my favorite flowers. I just love its beauty. It gets its name from the Greek word for “beautiful.” The calla lily has a bloom that resembles a trumpet. Did you know the most popular color of calla lily is white? The white calla lily symbolizes purity and innocence. It is also associated with faithfulness and holiness, which is a reason why you often see them used at Easter services and weddings.
