Every summer the city of Longview, Texas hosts the Great Texas Balloon Race. Dubbed “The longest-running hot-air balloon event in Texas,” this three-day festival brings professional hot air balloon pilots from all over the world to compete in the event.

According to its website, the event began in 1978 as an advertising gimmick to promote the opening of Longview’s new mall. From there, it “ballooned” into the three-day festival spectators enjoy today.

Our family attended this event one year and I got to get up close and watch these balloons as they inflated and took to flight. What a spectacular sight it was! Up, Up and Away painting was inspired by this festival’s celebration of hot air balloons.

“Very fun subject. While looking at this painting, I was thinking of the awe that little children of 4 or 5 years must experience. Artist Comments

I’m a sucker for old country barns. They have a certain charm that appeals to me, especially when they’re old and weathered.  And when the composition allows, I love to include them in my landscape paintings.

The Broadside of a Barn is a country landscape painting. To create an interesting effect, I painted this composition with a tight crop. The crop gives the impression that the painting is cut in half diagonally from corner to corner, creating two contrasting triangles. The upper triangle features organic shapes, whereas the lower triangle consists of geometric, manmade forms.

This painting appeals to me because of the many contrasts present within its composition. For example, near vs. far, organic vs. manufactured, curved vs. straight, round vs. square, dark vs. light, etc. Can you find other contrasts?

Artist Comments

I love great sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Gate; just about any story where space travel is involved. I should have grown up to be an astronaut instead of an artist, well…, maybe. The bottom line is, that I love adventure, and traveling through the far reaches of outer space would be the pinnacle of adventure for me. As a result, I created a painting depicting space travel.

I titled this painting “…The Next Frontier” because I do not believe space exploration is our final destination. When we explore space, we are exploring the next frontier, not the last. Our final frontier is to spend eternity with our Creator God in His kingdom! The Holy Bible has much to say about this topic. Check it out for yourself!

Artist Comments

The east Texas moon is the inspiration behind Full Moon Rising. My favorite time to take a walk is in the late evening before turning in for the night. On a cloudless or nearly cloudless night, I love looking up into the night sky and seeing the stars and moon. I especially love it when the moon shines so brightly that it lights up the night and makes it appear almost like day! This is just one of the many “bennies” of country living.

The Far Side of the Moon

FYI…Did you know the common belief the moon has a dark side is a myth? The truth is both sides of the Moon see the same amount of sunlight.

The Moon makes a full rotation on its axis approximately once every 27 days. This is also approximately the same amount of time it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth, which means the same side is always facing the Earth. Astronomers refer to this as “synchronous rotation.”

Only about 59% of the moon is ever visible to Earth over the course of an orbit. The rest of the 41% — the part we call “dark” — is never visible from Earth. The “far side” of the Moon has only been seen by the human eye from a spacecraft.

For those who may not know this and for those who do, we Texans are a proud bunch, and we love our state. One way we show off our Texas pride is by painting our beloved flag on our barns and outbuildings for all to see. It would be a rare thing indeed to travel throughout the Lone Star State and not see a barn or some other outbuilding painted up with the Texas Flag.

The barn in the painting above is a well-known landmark on US Highway 377, just east of Stephenville, Texas.

About the Texas Flag

Flag of TexasThe Texas flag, also known as the “Lone Star Flag,” was adopted in 1845 when Texas became the 28th state. It is a rectangle that has a width-to-length ratio of two to three. It has a vertical blue field of color and two horizontal color fields, one white and the other red. The flag also sports a single white star which is located in the center of the blue field. This lone star symbolizes “ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, state, and country.”

Each color field in the flag symbolizes the following:

    • Blue stands for loyalty
    • White represents purity
    • Red is for bravery

A Boy and His Dog evokes the joy of life’s simplest moments when we were young, and everything held wonder. Sometimes life gets so complicated that it’s nice to stop and remember the days of our youth.

When my children were young, like the little boy in this painting, I loved to watch their fascination with the simplest things in life. Things that, as an adult, I often take for granted. Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and enjoy simple pleasures like this again.

Artist Comments

The story behind this American Bison painting begins in 2016. It is the year the American Bison became America’s official national mammal. It is also in the summer of that same year, we traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, on a family vacation. While there, we made it a point to visit Custer State Park, where several herds of American bison roam freely. We just had to see these magnificent animals up close, and we were not disappointed.

Upon entering the park, a ranger told us to keep a safe distance and be conscious that this park is their home. We, humans, are the visitors, at least from the bison’s point of view. We drove through the park and were privileged to watch a herd of the largest mammal in North America crossing the road just a few feet ahead of our vehicle. They took my breath away. I wanted to exit the car and approach them, but that would not have been wise because Bison are massive wild animals that can become easily startled and behave aggressively toward what they perceive as an approaching predator.

I’m amazed by the Bison, they are truly a favorite animal of mine. I created this painting of the American Bison several years later after returning home from this trip.

American Bison, Where Are They Today?

In the 1500s, an estimated 30 to 60 million bison were living in North America. Today, approximately 200,000 bison live in all 50 states, including Native American lands, wildlife refuges, national parks, and private lands. The top five states where bison roam are South Dakota (where the largest population is), Nebraska, Montana, Colorado, and Oklahoma. The largest bison herd is in Yellowstone National Park, where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times. What makes Yellowstone’s bison herd so special is that they are pure-blood descendants of the early bison that grazed on America’s grassy plains.

“Bison are dangerous. Don’t get “up close” to them. We ran the Bill Cody Ranch for a while. One day someone drove up in a minivan with a broken-off buffalo horn sticking out of the side of the van. They had been up in Yellowstone Park, pulled off the side of the road to look at buffalo, and had opened the side door to take pictures. The flash set one of them off, and he charged the van. The Texas Longhorn is a common breed of registered cattle in Texas. They get their name from the breed’s characteristic longhorns. Some sets of horns on these massive bovines can reach a span of 7 feet from tip to tip. You have to see one of these magnificent animals in person to appreciate those vast horns. I live in East Texas, and there are several longhorn ranches near our small homestead. I love driving past those places and seeing the longhorns grazing and resting in their pastures. They were the inspiration behind this painting of a Texas Longhorn sitting in a meadow.

Some Fun Facts About the Texas Longhorn

    • The Texas Longhorn is descended from the first cattle brought to America by Christopher Columbus, which bred with native cattle. The breed is made up of around 80 percent Spanish blood and 20 percent “mongrel” heritage.
    • Texas Longhorns come in all colors and patterns, and no two look exactly alike. Their coat pattern can be flamboyant and loud, while others are more subtle in color.
    • Both male and female Longhorns have horns, although they will vary in shape and length according to gender. Longer horns are more desirable. The longer the horns, the more valuable the cow or bull. Calves will begin to grow their horns by three weeks of age.
    • There are Texas Longhorn ranches all over America. Longhorns easily adapt to all temperatures, from hot to cold climates. This breed of cattle can thrive in terrains and climates where other breeds have difficulty living.
