Artist Comments

One summer, my husband, Robert, and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was only two hours away from the OBX (Outer Banks). Currituck Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were excited to discover that visitors can climb its 220 steps to the top and look at the spectacular view. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse depicts the fun time we had on that trip.

—Teresa Bernard

More About the Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay in Corolla, NC on the northern end of the “Outer Banks.” Its distinct unpainted natural red brick appearance contrasts with fellow lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, which are painted in striking black and white. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and is still being used today to light the dark stretches of the southern Atlantic coastline. Annually the lighthouse welcomes an average of 185,000 visitors.

Artist Comments

I love country living! Years ago, a small caravan of covered wagons and horses with riders would make their yearly trek past our small ranch from a nearby township. Our own horses would race to the fence line to watch as others of their kind passed by, and our dogs would bark to alert us to the passing caravan. Unfortunately, today it no longer makes this journey. That “wagon train” was the inspiration behind this covered wagon painting.

Covered wagons and pioneers are some of the first things that come to mind when I think of the Old West. I love that sense of adventure and pioneering spirit that drove early settlers to pack up their family, mount a covered wagon, and move across the Great Plains to settle out West. They are indeed an icon of the American Old West.

A still life painting with a marine theme consists of some coral and a rusted nautical lantern with a white candle.

A nautical still life painting consisting of coral and lantern. The turquoise and tangerine coral sit in front of a rustic lantern with a white candle on top of a round pink marble table. In the background is a nondescript wallpaper with splashes of teal and tan colors and a window that lets in a strong light shining in on the table setting. Artist Comments

Artists will often use reference photos to compose their paintings. Sometimes they will create their composition from only one photo, and other times several photos are used. There’s nothing wrong with painting from photographs; artists do it all the time.

‘Still Life with Coral and Lantern’ combines several such reference photographs that depicted the nautical elements I wanted to portray in my artwork. One of those elements was coral. Coral can be in so many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Although, pinks and reds are the most common colors. They are tiny sea creatures that live in the ocean in large colonies that look like plants. They will live all of their adult lives in one place and prefer places where the water is warmer. When they die, their skeletons form a hard stony substance, also called coral. Large deposits of coral often accumulate to form reefs or islands.

I had never used coral in a painting before, so as I considered painting a still life with a nautical theme, I felt it would be interesting to include some coral in this one. I’m happy with how it turned out, and I especially like the nautical lantern to finish out this marine-themed still life.

Artist Comments

Some of the most gorgeous sunsets in the world happen right here in Texas, but of course, I might be just a tad bit biased. I love the bright, colorful sunsets that I get to enjoy almost every evening. And I also love the idea of cowboys, horses, and the Old West.

This painting with a cowboy gazing off into the sunset reminds me of my childhood when pretty much all you could watch on TV were westerns. It was a fantasy life all of us kids dreamed about living someday. We would pretend to be cowboys and rode imaginary horses for hours until mom called us in for supper.

When my husband decided it was time to retire from the Navy and settle down to live life as civilians, we bought some land and built a small ranch in East Texas with a couple of horses, a donkey, and a few heads of cattle. It was our dream to live the cowboy way of life.

This large painting depicts the African Camelthorn Trees of Namib-Naukluft National Park in a surrealistic composition, but it is actually a realistic depiction.

A surreal-like painting of the famous camelthorn (or camel thorn) trees in the desert dunes of African Namib-Naukluft National Park. The lifeless trees are in silhouette and surrounded by sand bathed in vibrant colors of orange and blue. Hand-painted and signed in the lower left-hand corner by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

This unique desert painting is painted by hand on gallery-wrapped stretched canvas. Artist Comments

This camelthorn trees painting was a fun one to do. At first, it appears to be a bit surreal; not the art genre that I do. I’m a realist painter, which means I try to paint things as they appear. The artwork is a landscape painting created from a photograph of Namib-Naukluft National Park in Africa. It depicts camelthorn trees with a dune rising in the background. The dune is bathed in orange by the effects of a rising sun. The trees are in shadow from another nearby dune. Some believe these trees have been dead for hundreds of years and that their failure to decompose is because the desert is so arid.

Artist Comments

This Calvary sunset painting is a religious-themed landscape painting portraying the cross in silhouette against a colorful evening sky. One should not consider this painting as a literal representation of the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Instead, it depicts that moment in time just after the disciples took His lifeless body down from the cross.

The Holy Bible tells us about this momentous historical event throughout its pages. From Scripture, we learn that Jesus Christ endured the crucifixion from approximately 9 AM until 3 PM and that His dead body was removed from the cross just before sundown.

The four New Testament Gospels also describe a supernatural phenomenon that occurred at the moment of His death.

—Teresa Bernard

What we Learn from the Four Gospels

    • Matthew mentions an earthquake, the opening of the saints’ tombs in the vicinity, and the resurrected saints making an appearance in Jerusalem.
    • Mark reveals that darkness spread throughout the land, and the temple veil was ripped in two.
    • Luke tells us Jesus was crucified with criminals and that the Roman soldiers mocked Him and cast lots for His clothing.
    • John describes the soldiers twisting a crown of thorns together and putting it on Jesus’ head; and that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, which means the place of the Skull.

Ballet is a form of dance and artistic expression that I admire. I enjoy going to see live ballet performances. Nothing beats seeing these gifted musicians perform live. It’s a sight to behold as one takes in the music, the sets, the ambiance, and the grace with which these dancers move across the stage telling a story.

Performing ballet is not for “the faint at heart.” Dancers who want to become professional dancers begin training as young as two years old. And becoming a member of a professional dance company requires years of extensive training and proper technique. Furthermore, because the style and technique of this art form can be so demanding on the body, ballerinas are frequently at high risk of injury.

I was in my late teens when I saw my first ballet performance. My best friend Cyndie and her family had tickets to see the Nutcracker Suite at a local theater. I can’t remember why, but Cyndie wasn’t able to attend, so she gave me her ticket. She felt that out of all her friends, I would appreciate the ballet the most—and she was right! I’m grateful to Cyndie for the opportunity to take her seat at the ballet, a performance that has endeared me to this art form ever since.

In 2015 my husband Robert and I traveled to Amarillo, TX, on vacation. While there, we visited the Palo Duro Canyon State Park several times, as it quickly became the highlight of our trip. The Lighthouse is one of many “must-see” attractions when visiting this park. Multiple visits to the canyon also provided me with many photo ops that would be used as reference material for this Palo Duro Canyon painting and future paintings of this park.

—Teresa Bernard

Fun Facts About Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo, TX. Nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of Texas” because of its size and resemblance to the Grand Canyon located in Arizona. It is the second-largest canyon in the U.S., measuring 120 miles long, 20 miles at its widest point, and 800 feet at its maximum depth. It also has over 29,000 scenic acres for the tourist or vacationer to enjoy. Like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Palo Duro Canyon features dramatic geological features, multicolored rock layers, and steep mesa walls.

For the park visitor, there are hiking trails, campgrounds, horseback riding, and more! The canyon is also host to TEXAS Outdoor Musical; the longest-running musical ever performed on stage. This world-renown musical drama has been performed on an outdoor stage in the canyon since 1965.

I absolutely adore bright red poinsettias! They are a staple in my home during the festive season, creating an atmosphere brimming with holiday cheer. If you were to visit me at Christmastime, you’d be greeted by an array of these vibrant flowers, adding splashes of joyous red throughout my house. For me, Christmas simply wouldn’t be complete without the striking contrast of red and green that poinsettias bring. Their vibrant hues instantly uplift the spirit, infusing every corner of my home with the warmth and magic of the holiday season. The sight of these beautiful flowers sets the perfect festive mood and reminds me of all the wonderful traditions that make Christmas so special.

—Teresa Bernard

Fun Things to Know About the Poinsettia

Poinsettias are associated with Christmas and are also known as the Christmas Star and Christmas Flower. Other than the Christmas tree, there is no other plant that symbolizes Christmas, like the poinsettia.

Poinsettias are perennials that bloom during the winter season. They come in over a hundred different colors, including red, pink, white, and yellow. Varieties within these hues include solids, streaked, marbled, and multicolored. The bright “flowers” are actually modified leaves called bracts, with the true blooms (the tiny yellow button-like buds) in the bracts’ center.

Your Feedback

“If you live in a place where you can see the stars in the night sky, count yourself as blessed to the uttermost. I pray for the opportunity to leave the city as soon as possible. May God provide the way.” — @ArtMusic_only, Gab
