Artist Comments

The painting Kokomo Beach was inspired by the Beach Boys, a popular American rock band, and their song of the same name. The song tells of a make-believe island getaway off the Florida Keys, a place where two lovers can escape to get away from it all. If you aren’t familiar with the song, or even if you are, click the link below to hear the Beach Boys sing about Kokomo.

Artist Comments

I’m fascinated by lighthouses! While living on the east coast, I had the opportunity to visit several of them on the shores of the Outer Banks. I also enjoy painting them and have done so numerous times throughout my fine art career. Several of those paintings were of lighthouses I had visited while living nearby. There are, however, many others in this big world that I have yet to visit and hope to do so someday. One such lighthouse is the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. It is the subject of this painting.

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

On the sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Shifting sands and coastal erosion are major issues in the area. The coast is eroding at a rate of 4.9 feet per year.

The lighthouse ceased operating in 1968. Its buildings were then used as a museum and coffee shop for a number of years before being abandoned due to shifting sands. The small buildings were later demolished after being severely damaged by the sand pressure.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have fallen into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. The relocation is expected to ensure the lighthouse’s survival until at least 2060.

Artist Comments

Artists are often inspired by their surroundings. We live out in the country. One of our neighbors lives down the road and around the corner from us. He has a large pond near the road with a small dock and a rowboat tied to it. Across from him is another neighbor who also has a pond near the road. It’s a smaller pond with lily pads. We pass by these two ponds almost every day on our way to and from our place to the nearby towns. The inspiration for this painting came from our neighbor’s ponds.

Artist Comments

Artists are frequently influenced by other artists whose artwork they admire. The inspiration for Bow of the Boat came from an art teacher years ago. He enjoyed doing paintings of boats. In several of his paintings, he would crop out the rest of the boat to draw attention to a specific part or area of a boat, just as I did in this one.

Artist Comments

Sunsets in the tropics are truly something special. The combination of beautiful colors, the smell of the sea air, the feel of sand beneath your feet, and the sounds of the ocean splashing against the seashore. The rays of a setting sun have a way of making one reflect on the best things in life.

At one time or another, just about everyone has marveled at the beauty of a sunset (or sunrise) with the splendor of its red, yellow, and orange colors. It may not have been on a distant tropical island somewhere; it might have been right in your own backyard. Regardless, wherever you find yourself basking in the beauty of a sunset, it is the best place to be.

Marine Life is a broad topic. This is the section where I post paintings that have anything to do with large bodies of water. Paintings of lighthouses, boats, ocean-going vessels, lakes, rivers, and the beach, among others, can be found here. It’s not restricted to sea creatures, seascapes, or ocean waves. It is for any piece of art with a marine or nautical theme.

Paintings with marine or nautical themes are soothing, making them ideal for a beach house, bedroom, living room, or pretty much anywhere you want to unwind. They’d also make great gifts for someone who loves the water.

The Sea of Galilee is a large freshwater lake located in northeast Israel, between the Golan Heights and the Galilee region. The Jordan River is its primary source of water. The lake is approximately 13 miles long and 8 miles wide.

My love of God’s word and Bible readings about Jesus inspired this painting of the famous Sea of Galilee. Israel is very important to me because it is home to God’s chosen people. I’ve never been to Israel, but it’s somewhere I’d like to visit someday. This painting was composed using a reference photo from the “Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.” The photographer, Todd Bolen, graciously permitted me to use his photographs for any of my Bible land paintings.

According to Matthew 4:13-22, this historic biblical location is where Jesus began His ministry and called His first disciples. This passage tells us Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. While walking along the Sea of Galilee, He called the first four of His disciples Simon (also called Peter), Andrew, James, and John.

Permission to use the photo as a painting source is courtesy of www.BiblePlaces.com.

“I love it and looked at the site. The “Sea of Galilee at Capernaum” put me in mind of something by Turner or some of the Hudson River schools. Wonderful stuff.” — josisenberg, SciFi & Fantasy Writers, Gab

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Another [painting] that really caught my eye especially is the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum–the light in the sky is particularly indicative of something spiritual, even if one didn’t know a thing about the religious significance of the place.” — Elena M., Columbia, MD

Sometimes I like to give myself a challenge when choosing a subject matter for my paintings. I found these fishing boat fenders tied to the pillar of a fishing pier very interesting because of all the different textures (wood pier, rusty chains, and rubbery boat fenders) present. I thought they would make an interesting challenge trying to paint all that texture. One does get a sense of texture from the detail in this artwork.

Other paintings that were a study of texture are:

What are boat fenders?

A boat fender is a type of bumper or cushioned buffer used to prevent a boat or other watercraft from bumping into a dock, pier, or another boat causing damage to its hull. They are often constructed of rubber, foam, or plastic, and they come in various shapes and sizes depending on their use.

My husband Robert and I sailed his 36-foot sailboat up the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from Florida to Virginia in the summer of 1999. Robert served in the military and was on his way from Naval Air Station Jacksonville to Naval Station Norfolk. We saw many interesting sites along the waterway that provided numerous opportunities to photograph for future paintings. This painting of a beached shrimp boat is based on a photograph I took during this trip.

About The ICW

The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile network of inland rivers, channels, and canals that runs along the United States eastern and southeast coasts. This navigable waterway is divided into two sections: the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Some of the canals are man-made, while others are natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds.

The ICW runs along the east coast from Boston, MA going south along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, TX. The purpose of the waterway is to provide a safe and navigable water route that can be used by both lightweight commercial barges and personal pleasure craft to avoid many of the hazards of open sea travel.

One summer, my husband, Robert, and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was only two hours away from the OBX (Outer Banks). Currituck Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were excited to discover that visitors can climb its 220 steps to the top and look at the spectacular view. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse depicts the fun time we had on that trip.

About the Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay in Corolla, North Carolina, on the northern end of the “Outer Banks.” Its distinct unpainted natural red brick appearance contrasts with fellow lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, which are painted in striking black and white. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and is still being used today to light the dark stretches of the southern Atlantic coastline. Annually the lighthouse welcomes an average of 185,000 visitors.
