This small wildlife painting depicts the Texas Horned Lizard. It would make an excellent gift for a budding herpetologist or someone with an interest in reptiles.

An original wildlife painting of the Texas horned lizard, also known as the horny toad by native Texans. This is a close-up painting of the lizard who sits on a neutral-colored background. The artwork is signed in the lower left by Texas artist Teresa Bernard.

This painting is perfect for cramped spaces or rooms because of its small size. It was painted by hand on 6×6-inch gallery-wrapped canvas. Texas Horned Lizard has a stylish look because its composition spills over the canvas’s edges. This art piece will look fantastic in your house, business, or wherever else it is hung, whether it is framed or not. Artist Comments

The Texas Horned Lizard, or simply “horny toad” as we called them when I was a kid growing up in west Texas, was a fun painting to do. It brought back lots of fond childhood memories. As children, my friends and I would see these little spiked critters all the time and often would play with them for a while, and then we would release them. As an adult, I noticed they aren’t in abundance so much anymore. So, I did a little research to find out why. Here is what I discovered from my readings.

In Search of the Horny Toad

About 70% of the Texas horned lizard’s diet is made up of harvester ants. Through the years, their population has declined by about 30%. Although I’m happy to read that they may be making a comeback. The decline is due to the overuse of pesticides and the spread of nonnative fire ants. Both eradicate harvester ant colonies, destroying the lizard’s principal source of food. The Texas horned lizard is now a protected species, and, in Texas, it is illegal to take, possess, transport, or sell them without a special permit.

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, issue August/September 2018, “Texas horned lizards once occurred throughout Texas, but now only a few populations remain. Efforts to move Texas horned lizards from one location in Texas to another, with the hope of establishing new self-sustaining populations in previously occupied habitats, are underway. Several Texas zoos are also working to develop colonies for reintroduction programs. RAWA (Recovering America’s Wildlife Act) funding would pay for “lizard factories” to help with reintroduction efforts.”

I shared a post about my findings on social media and received some interesting comments from my friends and followers.

One friend whom I’ve known since my early teen years lives in a small Texas town. She told me they have a horny toad festival every year called The Old Rip Festival. And it’s all about a horny toad named Old Rip! She sent me a link to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine website. It tells all about the legend, lore, and legacy of Old Rip, a horny toad that supposedly lived for 31 years!

Another follower comments, “you still see these in West Texas and Panhandle. Fire ants haven’t taken over every inch of ground as they have here, and harvester ants are still there, so that helps with the “horny toads.” Hope they make a comeback here someday.”

An original landscape painting of Devils Tower, a monolithic rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, and America’s first National Monument.

This is a small-scale landscape painting depicting the iconic Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. The monument stands out against a vibrant blue sky, with lush green trees in the foreground. Teresa Bernard, a landscape artist who specializes in oil paintings, has hand signed this art piece in the lower left corner.

Devils Tower is an artwork that requires no framing prior to display. Hand-painted on a gallery wrap stretched canvas, this type of canvas allows the composition to wrap around the canvas’s edges. If you wish to have it framed, it will look fantastic! A customized Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is included with the purchase of this artwork featuring the national monument.

The copyright watermark ©️ teresabernardart.com is not depicted on the original canvas painting.

Artist Comments

I painted the Devils Tower as an oil painting after returning home from a trip with my husband to South Dakota in 2016.  During this trip, we visited Devils Tower National Monument. The monument is a unique geological rock tower that rises above the grassy plains of northeast Wyoming. At the time, we were vacationing in Rapid City, South Dakota. Since the tower was within driving distance of our hotel, we could not pass up the opportunity to visit this “one-of-a-kind natural wonder.”

We could see Devils Tower from miles away as we made our approach to the national monument. Upon arriving at our destination, we drove through the 2.1 square mile park which surrounded the monument. We couldn’t help but notice the tower as it was the centerpiece of the park. It looked like a giant granite tree stump with a flat summit and fluted sides.

Devils Tower stands more than 867 feet from its base to the summit. It measures approximately 180 feet by 300 feet at the top and is about a mile in circumference at the base. There is a 1.25-mile hiking trail around the tower base that provided us with spectacular close-up views from all sides. There was another much wider 3-mile trail that also loops around the tower, but we didn’t take that one. We spent a better part of the day exploring and learning everything about the tower before heading back to the hotel. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone.

—Teresa Bernard

Why “Devils Tower” and Not “Devil’s Tower”?

In 1906, President Teddy Roosevelt declared Devils Tower America’s first official national monument. The monument was initially called “Devil’s Tower” (with an apostrophe), but due to a clerical error, the apostrophe was omitted and never corrected. To this day, it remains known as Devils Tower (without the apostrophe).

Artist Comments

The view of the full moon and Earth in this painting is from the International Space Station (ISS). I composed it using a NASA photo as a reference. An astronaut aboard the ISS captured the photograph while looking out a window at the moon. (See the link International Space Station | NASA to view the actual photo.) A View of The Full Moon and Earth painting makes it appear as if the Moon is in close orbit, hovering directly over the Earth, but this is not the case. The Moon is approximately 238,855 miles away, while the ISS orbits roughly 250 miles above the Earth.

A painting of a faraway galaxy. This piece of space art depicts a distant planet and binary stars. The vastness of outer space fills the background.

An original painting depicting a faraway galaxy. This space art features a planet with binary stars: a larger yellow sun and a smaller red sun. Artist Comments

This faraway galaxy painting is one of several small space artworks I’ve done. As a huge fan of the space program, I’m often looking at images of distant star systems, nebulae, constellations, planets, and moons, and considering how I might compose a painting from them. Some of my space paintings are based on NASA photos, such as ‘First Man on the Moon,’ while others are entirely based on my imagination.

This large painting depicts the African Camelthorn Trees of Namib-Naukluft National Park in a surrealistic composition, but it is actually a realistic depiction.

A surreal-like painting of the famous camelthorn (or camel thorn) trees in the desert dunes of African Namib-Naukluft National Park. The lifeless trees are in silhouette and surrounded by sand bathed in vibrant colors of orange and blue. Hand-painted and signed in the lower left-hand corner by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

This unique desert painting is painted by hand on gallery-wrapped stretched canvas. Artist Comments

This camelthorn trees painting was a fun one to do. At first, it appears to be a bit surreal; not the art genre that I do. I’m a realist painter, which means I try to paint things as they appear. The artwork is a landscape painting created from a photograph of Namib-Naukluft National Park in Africa. It depicts camelthorn trees with a dune rising in the background. The dune is bathed in orange by the effects of a rising sun. The trees are in shadow from another nearby dune. Some believe these trees have been dead for hundreds of years and that their failure to decompose is because the desert is so arid.

Sometimes flowers can be tiny and yet still beautiful. God’s handiwork in nature continues to be an excellent source of inspiration from which to create my paintings. This dill flowers painting is a prime example. What attracts me to this composition is the feeling of abstractness one gets, but you quickly discover a close-up of some dill flowers when you look closer.

—Teresa Bernard

About Dill Flowers

  • Dill (Anethum graveolens) is an aromatic annual herb with delicate, feathery green leaves and tiny, white or yellow flowers that blossom during the mid-summer. For centuries dill was revered for its culinary and medicinal properties.
  • Dill is mentioned in three places in the Bible (Isaiah 28:25 & 27 and Matthew 23:23) and in ancient Egyptian writings. Once considered a sign of wealth, ancient Greek and Roman cultures used dill as currency. Today, dill is one of the most widely used spices in European and Asian cuisine.

Artist Comments

This painting is part The Wooden Spool Series. I call it ‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #2’ because we live in the modern era, and thread is no longer sold on wooden spools. Sewing thread spun on wooden spools was probably used by our great-grandmothers, but not so much nowadays. Sewing thread is now sold on plastic spools.

Manufacturers are no longer making these wooden thread spools, but that doesn’t mean they have no value. In some ways, they can still have some usefulness. One benefit of these vintage spools is their durability and the ability to repurpose them in a variety of ways long after the thread has run out.

I recall playing with empty wooden spools as a child. I strung them on a string and used them to make necklaces. When I played with my Barbie dolls, I also used them for doll furniture, among other things.

Vintage wooden spools are useful for a variety of arts and crafts projects. Using your imagination, you could transform them into beautiful artwork or something else that would give them new life. Use them yourself or for a project, your children could enjoy. Better yet, use them in a project that you and your children could enjoy doing together.

Artist Comments

This painting is part of the Wooden Spool Series. I call it ‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #1’ because we have now come to the age where thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools.

Wooden spools found today are often over 50 years old and have become collectible antiques. Nowadays, it is common to find sewing thread available for purchase on plastic spools. Our grandmothers, and certainly our mothers, would have used them for their sewing projects.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child in the 60-70s. As I grew older, my grandmother began teaching me how to sew doll clothes and other items. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for just the right color of thread I needed, and I remember finding some wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It was more cost-effective for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool, don’t throw it away; hang on to it. Wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and its condition.
