A Teresa Bernard Oil Painting

A still life painting featuring vintage items typically found in a home office or study. It has a vintage feel due to the single-color palette used.

This one-of-a-kind painting depicts a still life of vintage objects typical of a home office or study. Atop an antique wooden desk, there lies an arrangement consisting of a stack of hardcover books, a feather quill pen, a candlestick with a tall candle, a pair of spectacles, and a glass of wine. The monochromatic (single-color) palette used in this painting gives it a vintage look. The painting is signed in the lower left side by artist Teresa Bernard.

The Study painting will need to be mounted in a frame before it is shown because the edges of the traditional stretched canvas are unpainted or raw. This still life oil painting comes with an official Certificate of Authenticity (COA) with your purchase.

Artist Comments

‘The Study’ is the first painting I’ve done using a monochromatic color scheme. What this means is that I deliberately chose to restrict the number of paint colors I used when doing this painting. The sepias I chose to use in this still life give it a vintage look.  This would be great wall décor for an office, study, den, or even a man cave.

—Teresa Bernard

What exactly is monochromatic?

A monochromatic color scheme is based on variations of a single hue, creating a palette through different shades, tints, and tones of that color.

Artist Comments

The Sea of Galilee is a large freshwater lake located in northeast Israel, between the Golan Heights and the Galilee region. The Jordan River is its primary source of water. The lake is approximately 13 miles long and 8 miles wide.

My love of God’s word and Bible readings about Jesus inspired this painting of the famous Sea of Galilee. Israel is very important to me because it is home to God’s chosen people. I’ve never been to Israel, but it’s somewhere I’d like to visit someday. This painting was composed using a reference photo from the “Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.” The photographer, Todd Bolen, graciously permitted me to use his photographs for any of my Bible land paintings.

According to Matthew 4:13-22, this historic biblical location is where Jesus began His ministry and called His first disciples. This passage tells us Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. While walking along the Sea of Galilee, He called the first four of His disciples Simon (also called Peter), Andrew, James, and John.

“I love it and looked at the site. The “Sea of Galilee at Capernaum” put me in mind of something by Turner or some of the Hudson River schools. Wonderful stuff.” — josisenberg, SciFi & Fantasy Writers, Gab

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Another [painting] that really caught my eye especially is the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum–the light in the sky is particularly indicative of something spiritual, even if one didn’t know a thing about the religious significance of the place.” — Elena M., Columbia, MD

A desert landscape painting of Utah’s Monument Valley National Park. The valley is a sacred area that is part of the Navajo Nation Reservation.

An original painting depicting Monument Valley National Park in Utah captures the essence of this desert expanse. The red-rock buttes stretch into the distance beneath a vast blue sky, lending the artwork a profound sense of depth. Signed by the artist Teresa Bernard in the lower-left corner, this piece would complement any rustic or Western-themed decor beautifully.

Artist Comments

Monument Valley in Utah, often referred to as the “Valley of the Rocks,” is recognized as one of the natural wonders of the world and is arguably the most iconic representation of the American Old West. The valley has been a preferred setting for Western films for many years. Its isolated red mesas, dramatic spires, and sandstone buttes, set against a backdrop of a vast, sandy desert, have been captured on film and in photographs numerous times throughout history.

Called Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks) by the Navajo, this famous valley lies in the southern part of Utah near the Arizona border within the Navajo Nation Reservation. When you first approach the area, these rock “monuments” will take your breath away. The eerie rock formations make you feel like you’ve been transported to another planet. It is truly one of the most majestic places on earth.

The first time I visited Monument Valley National Park, I knew right away I’d be doing a painting of this beautiful valley. Indeed, I have created multiple paintings of this location. I also have memories of several paintings I did of this place when I was a young student of art studying art under my dad, a professional oil painting artist. My dad loved painting this location too and produced several oil paintings of it himself. The whereabouts of these paintings remain uncertain after they were sold to art collectors and local businesses in the small town where we lived.

Artist Comments

Sometimes I like to give myself a challenge when choosing a subject matter for my paintings. I found these fishing boat fenders tied to the pillar of a fishing pier very interesting because of all the different textures (wood pier, rusty chains, and rubbery boat fenders) present. I thought they would make an interesting challenge trying to paint all that texture. One does get a sense of texture from the detail in this artwork.

What are boat fenders?

A boat fender is a type of bumper or cushioned buffer used to prevent a boat or other watercraft from bumping into a dock, pier, or another boat causing damage to its hull. They are often constructed of rubber, foam, or plastic, and they come in various shapes and sizes depending on their use.

In the summer of 1999, my husband Robert and I navigated his 36-foot sailboat along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from Florida to Virginia. Robert, a military serviceman, was transferring from Naval Air Station Jacksonville to Naval Station Norfolk. The journey presented us with many fascinating sights along the waterway, offering ample chances to capture photographs for my future paintings. “Along The ICW,” depicting a stranded shrimp boat, was inspired by a photo I snapped on that voyage.

—Teresa Bernard

About The ICW

The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile waterway network comprising inland rivers, channels, and canals along the eastern and southeastern coasts of the United States. It is split into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The waterway includes both man-made canals and natural water bodies like inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds.

The ICW stretches from Boston, MA, down the Atlantic Seaboard, around Florida’s southern tip, and along the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, TX. Its main function is to offer a secure and navigable route for light commercial and personal pleasure vessels, providing a safer alternative to the perils of open sea travel.

One summer, my husband, Robert, and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was only two hours away from the OBX (Outer Banks). Currituck Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were excited to discover that visitors can climb its 220 steps to the top and look at the spectacular view. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse depicts the fun time we had on that trip.

—Teresa Bernard

More About the Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay in Corolla, NC on the northern end of the “Outer Banks.” Its distinct unpainted natural red brick appearance contrasts with fellow lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, which are painted in striking black and white. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and is still being used today to light the dark stretches of the southern Atlantic coastline. Annually the lighthouse welcomes an average of 185,000 visitors.

Artist Comments

Artists will often use reference photos to compose their paintings. Sometimes they will create their composition from only one photo, and other times several photos are used. There’s nothing wrong with painting from photographs; artists do it all the time.

‘Still Life with Coral and Lantern’ combines several such reference photographs that depicted the nautical elements I wanted to portray in my artwork. One of those elements was coral. Coral can be in so many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Although, pinks and reds are the most common colors. They are tiny sea creatures that live in the ocean in large colonies that look like plants. They will live all of their adult lives in one place and prefer places where the water is warmer. When they die, their skeletons form a hard stony substance, also called coral. Large deposits of coral often accumulate to form reefs or islands.

I had never used coral in a painting before, so as I considered painting a still life with a nautical theme, I felt it would be interesting to include some coral in this one. I’m happy with how it turned out, and I especially like the nautical lantern to finish out this marine-themed still life.

Artist Comments

This Calvary sunset painting is a religious-themed landscape painting portraying the cross in silhouette against a colorful evening sky. One should not consider this painting as a literal representation of the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Instead, it depicts that moment in time just after the disciples took His lifeless body down from the cross.

The Holy Bible tells us about this momentous historical event throughout its pages. From Scripture, we learn that Jesus Christ endured the crucifixion from approximately 9 AM until 3 PM and that His dead body was removed from the cross just before sundown.

The four New Testament Gospels also describe a supernatural phenomenon that occurred at the moment of His death.

—Teresa Bernard

What we Learn from the Four Gospels

    • Matthew mentions an earthquake, the opening of the saints’ tombs in the vicinity, and the resurrected saints making an appearance in Jerusalem.
    • Mark reveals that darkness spread throughout the land, and the temple veil was ripped in two.
    • Luke tells us Jesus was crucified with criminals and that the Roman soldiers mocked Him and cast lots for His clothing.
    • John describes the soldiers twisting a crown of thorns together and putting it on Jesus’ head; and that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, which means the place of the Skull.
