I’m a huge supporter of the United States Space Program, both the military and civilian branches, and this painting is a tribute to them. I love traveling to new places, and for me, outer space would be the ultimate adventure in this physical universe.
About the U.S. Space Shuttle
The Space Shuttle is a retired spacecraft system operated by NASA from 1981 to 2011 as part of the United States Space Shuttle program. It was intended to be a partially reusable spacecraft that would be launched like a rocket and landed on a runway like a glider. The space shuttle launched astronauts and cargo into space and returned them safely.
Six space shuttles have been built for the United States Space Program since its inception. The first space shuttle, Enterprise, was a prototype that was carried on its maiden voyage by a Boeing 747, but it never made it into space. Challenger, Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour were the other five space shuttles. All five went on space missions.

This painting depicts the beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 1566, also known as the Spanish Dancer. This lovely solar system is the result of billions of stars, gas, and dust held together by a gravitational pull. Its breathtaking beauty inspired me to paint this extraordinary galaxy within the Dorado constellation.

The view of the full moon and Earth in this painting is from the International Space Station (ISS). I composed it using a NASA photo as a reference. It was taken by an astronaut looking out the ISS’s window toward the moon.
The painting and photo I used make it appear as if the Moon is in close orbit, hovering directly over the Earth, but this is not the case. The Moon is approximately 238,855 miles away, and the ISS is approximately 250 miles above the Earth.

This faraway galaxy painting is one of several small space artworks I’ve done. As a huge fan of the space program, I’m often looking at images of distant star systems, nebulae, constellations, planets, and moons, and considering how I might compose a painting from them. Some of my space paintings are based on NASA photos, such as “First Man on the Moon,” while others are entirely based on my imagination.

The most eye-catching feature of this painting is that big orange moon in the night sky silhouetted by an egret. Looking at it, one can easily imagine what it would be like to “fly away” to Earth’s only satellite.
The night sky is one of my favorite things. I love looking up at it to see the vastness of outer space, the faraway planets, the milky way along with all the stars and constellations, and of course, Earth’s moon in whichever stage it happens to be in at the time. I especially love seeing our moon shining so brightly it makes the night look like it’s daytime!

A few years ago, my husband and I took a trip to San Antonio, TX, the day after Thanksgiving. We planned for a long weekend. While there, we spent the evenings strolling the streets around the Alamo when we came across an artist selling his space art on the sidewalk.
The interesting part about this artist is he was painting them right then and there as spectators watched. It was fascinating to watch him create faraway worlds, moons, cosmic formations, and alien landscapes. I looked on as he created his artwork using spray paint and props to mask off certain areas of the canvas paper he didn’t want overspray to hit. Each creation only took a few minutes to complete. And no two paintings were alike. I could have watched him all night! When we returned home from that long weekend, I decided to do some space art of my own.
My Space Paintings
Space art isn’t a new genre of art for me. I painted my first outer space painting as a young teen for an arts and crafts show I entered. My love of the iconic TV show Star Trek led me to paint the “Starship Enterprise” in orbit around some distant planet. The painting got a lot of attention at that small art show and later it sold. I wish I had a photograph of it, but I was a young teen at the time and didn’t even think to snap a photo of it. Besides, I was just so excited that someone wanted to pay for one of my paintings!
Decades would pass before I did another otherworldly painting, and that space art painting was a commission. The painting consisted of a lunar landscape depicting Apollo 14’s mission to the moon and man’s first footprint left there. This sparked a renewed interest in creating more space landscapes to add to my repertoire of space art.
I’m a huge fan of the space program. I love the idea of visiting other worlds to see what’s out there. One could say I’m a bit of an adventurer at heart. As a matter of fact, to me being able to travel through the far reaches of the galaxy would be the ultimate adventure. Maybe someday I will, but for today, I’ll have to settle for that adventure on the surface of my canvases in the space art paintings I create.
Art Commissions
Teresa also paints on commission for fellow art collectors and enthusiasts from all around the world. If you have a specific space art painting in mind that you’d like her to paint for you, please see “How to Commission a Painting” for more information.

I love great sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Gate; just about any story where space travel is involved. I should have grown up to be an astronaut instead of an artist, well…, maybe. The bottom line is, that I love adventure, and traveling through the far reaches of outer space would be the pinnacle of adventure for me. As a result, I created a painting depicting space travel.
I titled this painting “…The Next Frontier” because I do not believe space exploration is our final destination. When we explore space, we are exploring the next frontier, not the last. Our final frontier is to spend eternity with our Creator God in His kingdom! The Holy Bible has much to say about this topic. Check it out for yourself!
