Canvas Type: Gallery Wrap Stretched Canvas
Frame: Unframed; Ready to Hang
Signed: On the front

A one-of-a-kind insect art painting of the Papilio Machaon Caterpillar (commonly known as the Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar). The yellow and black striped caterpillar wiggles and climbs its way up a stalk of Queen Ann’s Lace. Hand-painted and signed in the lower left corner on high-quality 6×8 inch canvas by insect artist Teresa Bernard.

Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar is a smaller artwork painted by hand on premium gallery wrap canvas. Its scaled-down size makes it ideal for locations that are cramped or constrained. Because the composition wraps around the edges of the canvas, it does not need to be framed before being displayed. However, if you choose to have it framed, it will look fantastic. Upon purchase, this insect oil painting is accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Artist Comments

I saw this little caterpillar one day and thought it would be a fun painting to do. Its colorful stripes and long body is what caught my attention. Someday soon this little insect will transform into a beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly.

Some Interesting Facts about Caterpillars

Are caterpillars insects?
Yes. Caterpillars, like their parent butterflies or moths, are insects. The caterpillar’s only job is to eat. It can grow and expand its size more than 1,000 times while eating before metamorphosing into a moth or butterfly.

Caterpillars have twelve eyes.
A caterpillar has twelve tiny eyes called stemmata; six on each side of its head. One would think that a creature with so many eyes would have excellent vision, but not in this case. Their tiny eyes only aid in distinguishing between light and dark.

Caterpillars have a huge number of muscles in their bodies.
The muscles in a caterpillar far outnumber those in humans. A caterpillar has 4,000 muscles, while humans have 650. They rely on these muscles to move because they do not have any bones inside them.

Artist Comments

This painting is of a large white dog, possibly a Great Pyrenees. The Great Pyrenees has become one of my favorite dog breeds ever since Lobo, our Pyrenees mix, showed up at our door one day and decided to stay. Living out in the country as we do, means we get many strays who wander up to our door looking for a place to call home. We don’t know where they come from, but we never turn them away. We try to reunite them with their owner, if possible. If not, then we find them a new home or wind up adopting them ourselves. This artwork isn’t specifically of Lobo, but the dog portrayed in it sure does remind me of him.

Read more about how I painted this painting here.

A Few Fun Facts About Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrenees makes excellent family pets with their calm, devoted, and well-mannered disposition. They are very loyal to those they love and protect the family with their lives if need be. In addition, they make excellent guard dogs, especially around livestock.

The Great Pyrenees is a dog breed of great intellect having a mind of their own; loving to figure things out by themselves and are good at problem-solving. While this is a wonderful trait, it can create a bit of a challenge when it comes to training.

One of the things I love most about living out in the country is seeing wildlife in its natural environment. From the smallest to the largest of all God’s creatures, I love them all!

I’ve painted domestic animals and wildlife from all over the world, not just those I’ve seen in the countryside where I live. Some were commissioned pet or animal portraits, while others were of wildlife that I find fascinating.

A unique painting of a Monarch Butterfly. This colorful insect is perched high on a bright orange flower blossom. This artistic piece is signed by insect artist Teresa Bernard in the left corner of the canvas.

The small size of this artwork makes it perfect for rooms or areas where larger-scaled artwork would not fit. It measures only 6×6-inches and is hand-painted on artist-grade gallery wrap canvas. The Monarch Butterfly won’t need a frame because its composition extends around the edges of the canvas giving it a modern look. The artwork, whether framed or unframed, will enhance its appearance in your home, office, or any display space. Artist Comments

This monarch butterfly painting is one of several compact-size paintings I’ve composed. I decided to do some smaller paintings to attract a broader range of buyers and collectors for my art pieces. So I purchased a supply of 6×6 inch stretched canvases and started composing paintings on them. I work on these small canvases alongside the larger paintings when I paint, working on both sized artworks during the same painting session.  I had no idea how much I would enjoy creating these smaller paintings until I started doing them.

A wildlife painting depicting a lone American Bison standing out on the open range. In the background, the prairie rises to meet a blue sky with wispy overhead clouds. The one-of-a-kind artwork, American Bison, was professionally hand-crafted on a gallery wrap stretched canvas. The artist has taken great care to carry the composition onto the canvas’s edge. When a painting’s composition is on this kind of canvas, a frame is not necessary for exhibition; but, if you wish to have it framed, it will look fantastic either way. Artist Comments

The story behind this American Bison painting begins in 2016. It is the year the American Bison became America’s official national mammal. It is also in the summer of that same year, we traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, on a family vacation. While there, we made it a point to visit Custer State Park, where several herds of American bison roam freely. We just had to see these magnificent animals up close, and we were not disappointed.

Upon entering the park, a ranger told us to keep a safe distance and be conscious that this park is their home. We, humans, are the visitors, at least from the bison’s point of view. We drove through the park and were privileged to watch a herd of the largest mammal in North America crossing the road just a few feet ahead of our vehicle. They took my breath away. I wanted to exit the car and approach them, but that would not have been wise because Bison are massive wild animals that can become easily startled and behave aggressively toward what they perceive as an approaching predator.

I’m amazed by the Bison, they are truly a favorite animal of mine. I created this painting of the American Bison several years later after returning home from this trip.

American Bison, Where Are They Today?

In the 1500s, an estimated 30 to 60 million bison were living in North America. Today, approximately 200,000 bison live in all 50 states, including Native American lands, wildlife refuges, national parks, and private lands. The top five states where bison roam are South Dakota (where the largest population is), Nebraska, Montana, Colorado, and Oklahoma. The largest bison herd is in Yellowstone National Park, where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times. What makes Yellowstone’s bison herd so special is that they are pure-blood descendants of the early bison that grazed on America’s grassy plains.

Your Feedback

“Bison are dangerous. Don’t get “up close” to them. We ran the Bill Cody Ranch for a while. One day someone drove up in a minivan with a broken-off buffalo horn sticking out of the side of the van. They had been up in Yellowstone Park, pulled off the side of the road to look at buffalo, and had opened the side door to take pictures. The flash set one of them off, and he charged the van. They managed to get the door closed just before he hit.” — @Paul47, Gab
