In 2015 my husband Robert and I traveled to Amarillo, TX, on vacation. While there, we visited the Palo Duro Canyon State Park several times, as it quickly became the highlight of our trip. The Lighthouse is one of many “must-see” attractions when visiting this park. Multiple visits to the canyon also provided me with many photo ops that would be used as reference material for this Palo Duro Canyon painting and future paintings of this park.

Fun Facts About Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo, TX. Nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of Texas” because of its size and resemblance to the Grand Canyon located in Arizona. It is the second-largest canyon in the U.S., measuring 120 miles long, 20 miles at its widest point, and 800 feet at its maximum depth. It also has over 29,000 scenic acres for the tourist or vacationer to enjoy. Like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Palo Duro Canyon features dramatic geological features, multicolored rock layers, and steep mesa walls.

For the park visitor, there are hiking trails, campgrounds, horseback riding, and more! The canyon is also host to TEXAS Outdoor Musical; the longest-running musical ever performed on stage. This world-renown musical drama has been performed on an outdoor stage in the canyon since 1965.

Hot air balloons, those majestic vessels of the sky, evoke a sense of wonder and freedom. As they ascend, the world below transforms into a patchwork quilt of colors and contours.

Every summer the city of Longview, Texas hosts the Great Texas Balloon Race. Dubbed “The longest-running hot-air balloon event in Texas,” this three-day festival brings professional hot air balloon pilots from all over the world to compete in the event.

According to its website, the event began in 1978 as an advertising gimmick to promote the opening of Longview’s new mall. From there, it “ballooned” into the three-day festival spectators enjoy today.

Our family attended this event one year and I got to get up close and watch these balloons as they inflated and took to flight. What a spectacular sight it was! Up, Up and Away painting was inspired by this festival’s celebration of hot air balloons.

Your Feedback

“Very fun subject. While looking at this painting, I was thinking of the awe that little children of 4 or 5 years must experience. Since little children enjoy the handheld colorful balloons a lot, I would like to see their expressions with a sky full of these very colorful giants.” — @JosephChristian33, Gab

Artist Comments

I love great sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Gate; just about any story where space travel is involved. I should have grown up to be an astronaut instead of an artist, well…, maybe. The bottom line is, that I love adventure, and traveling through the far reaches of outer space would be the pinnacle of adventure for me. As a result, I created a painting depicting space travel.

I titled this painting ‘Space…The Next Frontier’ because I do not believe space exploration is our final destination. When we explore space, we are exploring the next frontier, not the last. Our final frontier is to spend eternity with our Creator God in His kingdom! The Holy Bible has much to say about this topic. Check it out for yourself!

Your Feedback

“When I was a little kid, I loved to draw spaceships during every idle moment. The adult caregivers eventually cured me of that allegedly bad habit. I know it doesn’t pay well, but please continue with your space-themed art. I think your painting is beautiful!” — @Skylark5, Gab

Artist Comments

For those who may not know this and for those who do, we Texans are a proud bunch, and we love our state. One way we show off our Texas pride is by painting our beloved flag on our barns and outbuildings for all to see. It would be a rare thing indeed to travel throughout the Lone Star State and not see a barn or some other outbuilding painted up with the Texas Flag.

The barn in the painting above is a well-known landmark on US Highway 377, just east of Stephenville, Texas.

—Teresa Bernard

About the Texas Flag

Flag of TexasThe Texas flag, also known as the “Lone Star Flag,” was adopted in 1845 when Texas became the 28th state. It is a rectangle that has a width-to-length ratio of two to three. It has a vertical blue field of color and two horizontal color fields, one white and the other red. The flag also sports a single white star which is located in the center of the blue field. This lone star symbolizes “ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, state, and country.”

Each color field in the flag symbolizes the following:

    • Blue stands for loyalty
    • White represents purity
    • Red is for bravery
