About This Painting

Red on red, the ladybug settles into the flower’s embrace—nearly hidden, yet unmistakably present.

Delicate petals cradle a red ladybug whose domed shell mirrors the flower’s color, creating a subtle camouflage effect. The insect’s domed shell gleams with subtle highlights, while its black spots punctuate the surface with crisp contrast. Petal edges curve gently beneath the ladybug’s feet, suggesting softness and depth. The background remains tight and intimate, keeping focus on the insect’s near-perfect disguise. Signed by the artist Teresa Bernard on the lower left corner, the mark ensures originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a gallery-wrapped canvas, the artwork measures 6×6 inches. Its composition continues around the edges, allowing for display without a frame. Artist Reflections

Ladybugs are everywhere—on windowsills, in gardens, tucked into childhood memories. But what caught my attention here wasn’t nostalgia. It was the way this one nearly vanished into the flower beneath it. Red on red. A quiet trick of survival. That kind of camouflage isn’t accidental—it’s deliberate, designed, and worth noticing.

I chose this composition because it challenges the viewer to slow down. To look twice. There’s no dramatic gesture, no exaggerated contrast. Just a small insect doing what it was made to do: preserve its life by blending in. That tension between visibility and protection is what made me want to paint it.

This is the second ladybug oil painting in my Insect Art Series. I’m drawn to subjects like this—familiar, but not simple. They hold still long enough to be seen, but only if you’re paying attention.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

The Legend of the Ladybug

Centuries ago, European farmers watched helplessly as pests devoured their crops. In their desperation, they turned to prayer—asking the Virgin Mary, the Blessed Lady, for protection. Not long after, small red-and-black beetles began appearing in their fields, feeding on the destructive insects. The crops recovered, and the farmers saw it as a sign.

They began calling the beetles “the beetles of Our Lady.” Over time, the name softened into “ladybug.” The red shell represented Mary’s cloak, and the black spots her sorrows. It’s a quiet legend, passed down through generations, linking a humble garden insect to a story of hope and provision.

About This Painting

A sunflower is quietly portrayed from behind in this oil on canvas composition. Known for its cheerful spirit, the bloom is a meditative symbol of hope and warmth.

A bold sunflower turns away from the viewer, revealing the quiet beauty often hidden behind the bloom. In this original oil painting, the vibrant yellow petals are rendered with intricate detail, each brushstroke echoing the natural rhythm of the flower as it rises toward a sky-blue background. The textured involucral bracts at the base of the blossom add depth and realism, grounding the composition in organic structure. By choosing to portray the sunflower from behind, the painting offers a fresh perspective on a classic symbol of joy and optimism—one that speaks gently of resilience and the grace found in subtle angles.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet honesty in this pose—the way the sunflower turns away, not to hide, but to rise toward the light. Painting it from behind felt meaningful, like capturing a quiet act of devotion. There’s such reverence in the way sunflowers grow, always seeking the sun—always reaching upward with purpose. It’s no wonder they’ve become symbols of faith, loyalty, and longevity.

This composition allowed me to explore those themes in a gentle way. The upward lift of the petals, the soft curve of the stem, and that brilliant contrast against the sky—it all came together in a way that felt both grounded and spiritual. I didn’t want the painting to shout; I wanted it to speak softly, like a prayer in motion.

About This Painting

A tightly cropped composition of a tractor tire is depicted in this painting. This unique artwork is ideal for anyone who enjoys life on the farm.

A tightly cropped view of a weathered tractor tire takes the spotlight, drawing attention to its worn tread and rustic texture. The rim bears the patina of rust, adding to the authentic feel of a tool shaped by time. In the background, a wooden plank floor offers contrast and depth, while the edge of a second tire quietly enters the frame. It’s an earthy, intimate portrayal that resonates with those who appreciate rural life or country-inspired décor.

Artist Reflections

Composing this tractor tire painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. I like to give myself challenges now and then. With this one, I set out to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I believe I achieved that goal.

What I like best about this painting are the various textures present in the composition — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusted metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many interesting things going on in this painting; it was a lot of fun to paint!

A tractor tire isn’t something most people imagine as the subject of a painting, yet here it is—center stage and full of personality. I can picture it hanging in a man cave, an office, or anywhere someone loves tractors, cars, or just the gritty charm of rural life.

Artist Reflections

‘Blue Shutters’ is my quiet homage to the island of Karpathos—a place I’ve come to admire. As a tourist at heart, I’ve always been drawn to places I’ve never visited, intrigued by their rhythms and hidden details. I suppose it’s the explorer’s soul in me—always seeking meaning in places beyond my doorstep. Karpathos captivated me with its architecture: sun-washed stucco, vivid blue shutters, and an elegant simplicity that feels like a pause in time.

What first drew me into the creative process for this painting was a reference photo that offered more than a charming scene. It opened a doorway into a world I longed to visit and understand intimately. The interplay of cool blues, the lantern by the window, and the burst of orange blooms felt like an invitation to imagine life unfolding just beyond the frame.

Though I haven’t walked its winding streets, Karpathos left a strong impression—quietly landing on my list of places to explore firsthand someday. It’s remarkable how an image can spark that kind of longing, reminding us that art doesn’t just capture a scene; sometimes it reveals a place we didn’t know we needed to know.

This painting became a way for me to reflect on that sense of peace and curiosity—a reminder that beauty isn’t always grand. Sometimes, it’s found in quiet corners, behind blue shutters.

Artist Reflections

I love trees! They enrich our world in so many ways—offering shade, cleaner air, and a quiet sense of renewal. But what draws me to them most is their calming presence and natural beauty. Whether standing alone or gathered in a forest, trees seem to carry a rhythm all their own. I often think of them as nature’s silent musicians, swaying gently to a song we can feel more than hear. Capturing that stillness and harmony on canvas is something I truly enjoy.

A Favorite Poem

This poem echoes the spirit of Song of the Trees—a quiet tribute to nature’s enduring presence.

Song of the Trees
by Mary Colborne-Veel

We are the Trees.
Our dark and leafy glade
Bands the bright earth with softer mysteries.
Beneath us changed and tamed the seasons run:
In burning zones, we build against the sun
Long centuries of shade.

We are the Trees,
Who grow for man’s desire,
Heat in our faithful hearts, and fruits that please.
Dwelling beneath our tents, he lightly gains
The few sufficiencies his life attains—
Shelter, and food, and fire.

We are the Trees
That by great waters stand,
By rills that murmur to our murmuring bees.
And where, in tracts all desolate and waste,
The palm-foot stays, man follows on, to taste
Springs in the desert sand.

We are the Trees
Who travel where he goes
Over the vast, inhuman, wandering seas.
His tutors we, in that adventure brave—
He launched with us upon the untried wave,
And now its mastery knows.

We are the Trees
Who bear him company
In life and death. His happy sylvan ease
He wins through us; through us, his cities spread
That like a forest guard his unfenced head
’Gainst storm and bitter sky.

We are the Trees.
On us the dying rest
Their strange, sad eyes, in farewell messages.
And we, his comrades still, since earth began,
Wave mournful boughs above the grave of man,
And coffin his cold breast.

This poem is in the public domain.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been a huge fan of the United States Space Program—both its civilian pursuits and military achievements. This painting is my personal tribute to the brave souls who make space exploration possible, from the pioneers who dare to dream big, to the engineers who turn dreams into reality, to the astronauts who carry our dreams beyond Earth. Their work inspires me deeply.

As someone who loves discovering new places, the idea of journeying into outer space feels like the ultimate adventure. Painting this work allowed me to celebrate that spirit of exploration and reflect on our innate desire to reach beyond the horizon.

About the U.S. Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttle is a retired spacecraft system operated by NASA from 1981 to 2011 as part of the United States Space Shuttle program. It was intended to be a partially reusable spacecraft that would be launched like a rocket and landed on a runway like a glider. The space shuttle launched astronauts and cargo into space and returned them safely.

The United States Space Program has constructed six space shuttles since it began. The initial shuttle, Enterprise, served as a prototype and was transported on its inaugural journey by a Boeing 747, although it never reached space. The remaining shuttles, Challenger, Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour, all completed space missions.

Each shuttle carries a legacy of courage and ingenuity—a testament to the American spirit of reaching higher and daring greatly. Though now retired and resting in museums, they continue to spark the imagination, reminding us that the adventure isn’t over—only waiting for its next chapter. Their story mirrors the heart behind my painting: bold dreams, quiet determination, and a shared belief that we can rise above the ordinary and reach for something greater.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet beauty of outer space—its scale, its stillness, and the way light behaves in the dark. In this painting, I wanted to explore the idea of a distant planet illuminated by two suns. In astronomy, this is known as a binary star system—two stars orbiting one another, often producing striking visual contrasts on surrounding celestial bodies. I found that concept intriguing and wanted to capture it in a way that felt both accurate and visually compelling. The soft crescent lighting effect adds a quiet tension, and it gave me an opportunity to create a scene that feels both dramatic and believable.

About This Painting

Boat fenders rest on aged dock pilings, their surfaces marked by years of exposure. Soft light filters across timber and chain, revealing the quiet geometry of this weatherworn corner.

A quiet maritime vignette unfolds at the edge of a pier, where aged timber pilings rise, their surfaces dulled by years of sun and tide. Hanging from them are boat fenders, each one bearing the marks of wear—scuffed textures and timeworn surfaces. A rusted chain loops between pilings, its sag and patina adding depth to the scene. The light falls softly across the composition, creating gentle contrasts and a palette of deep umber, burnt orange, earthy ochre, and ruddy sienna. In the lower left corner, the painting bears the signature of Teresa Bernard, affirming both the craftsmanship and identity of the artist.

“Boat Fenders” is an original oil painting created on a durable 9×12-inch canvas board — chosen for its ability to hold fine detail and maintain structural integrity over time. The artwork arrives unframed, making it ideal for tailoring to your own décor and personal style. A customized Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the piece, hand-signed by Teresa and stamped with her personal embossed seal, certifying provenance and originality.

Offering more than nautical charm, “Boat Fenders” delivers atmosphere, craftsmanship, and emotional resonance. Ideal for a home, office, fishing cabin, or man cave, the piece makes a meaningful gift for anyone drawn to the water or coastal living. With its timeless composition and soulful texture, this one-of-a-kind artwork will anchor any space with quiet strength.

Artist Reflections

Sometimes I enjoy giving myself a challenge when selecting a subject matter for my paintings — something that nudges me to stretch my skills and lean into the details. Boat Fenders began that way. While walking near a fishing pier, I was drawn to the boat fenders hanging from a weathered pillar. It wasn’t just their placement that caught my eye, but the contrast of textures gathered in one quiet spot: the aged wood of the pier, the corroded metal of the chains, and the smooth, rubbery surface of the fenders themselves. I saw potential in capturing each surface authentically, and that challenge became the heart of the composition. Texture plays a quiet but powerful role here, and I worked deliberately to ensure those tactile qualities come through in the final piece — inviting the viewer to almost feel the scene, not just see it.

What are boat fenders?

A boat fender is a type of bumper or cushioned buffer used to protect a boat’s hull. It keeps the vessel from striking a dock, pier, or another boat. This simple device helps prevent scrapes and impact damage. Fenders are usually made of rubber, foam, or plastic. They come in different shapes and sizes to suit various boating needs.

About Poinsettias

Poinsettias are associated with Christmas and are also known as the Christmas Star and Christmas Flower. Other than the Christmas tree, there is no other plant that symbolizes Christmas, like the poinsettia.

Poinsettias are perennials that bloom during the winter season. They come in over a hundred different colors, including red, pink, white, and yellow. Varieties within these hues include solids, streaked, marbled, and multicolored. The bright “flowers” are actually modified leaves called bracts, with the true blooms (the tiny yellow button-like buds) in the bracts’ center.

About This Painting

The heavens flare with color as an asteroid breaches the atmosphere, casting brilliance against the backdrop of stars.

A blazing fireball dominates the canvas, streaking diagonally across a planetary atmosphere in brilliant hues of orange and yellow. The asteroid is beginning to penetrate the planet’s outer layer, igniting the surrounding gases and heating the atmosphere with explosive force. A burst of fiery light erupts around the impact zone, radiating outward in a splash-like formation. The background reveals deep space scattered with tiny stars that contrast the fiery foreground. The planet’s curvature anchors the composition with a sense of scale and gravity. Artist Teresa Bernard signs the painting in the lower right corner, ensuring originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a 6×6-inch gallery-wrapped canvas, the composition continues seamlessly around the edges for a polished, frameless presentation. If desired, the painting can be custom framed to complement your décor and enhance its presence. It arrives unframed giving you the freedom to display it exactly as you wish. Artist Reflections

I’ve always been fascinated by space and the dramatic events that unfold beyond our reach. This painting was inspired by the idea of an asteroid entering a planet’s atmosphere—a moment filled with motion, heat, and intensity. I wanted to capture that visual energy using bold oranges and yellows to reflect the fire and force of impact. Though small in size, the composition draws the eye and holds attention by design. It’s part of my Cosmos Series, which explores celestial subjects through realism and detail. I hope it sparks curiosity and brings a touch of cosmic drama to any space that displays it.
