Artist Reflections

The story behind this painting begins in the summer of 2016—the same year the American bison was officially named our national mammal. That summer, my family and I traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, and made a point to visit Custer State Park, where several herds of bison roam freely across the land.

I’ll never forget what the park ranger told us as we entered: “Keep your distance. This is their home. We’re the visitors.” That stayed with me. As we drove through the park, we were lucky enough to witness a herd crossing the road just feet from our vehicle. These animals were enormous, powerful, and breathtakingly calm. I remember wanting to step out of the car and get closer—but of course, that would’ve been foolish. Bison may appear docile, but they’re wild creatures, easily startled and fiercely protective.

That moment stayed with me long after we returned home. I’ve always been fascinated by the American bison—their strength, their history, their quiet dignity. Years later, I finally painted this piece. This isn’t just a portrait of an animal; it’s a tribute to a memory, a legacy, and a presence that commands respect.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

American Bison, Where Are They Today?

In the 1500s, an estimated 30 to 60 million bison roamed the North American plains. Today, roughly 200,000 remain—living across all 50 states on Native American lands, wildlife refuges, national parks, and private ranches. South Dakota is home to the largest population, followed by Nebraska, Montana, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

The most iconic herd lives in Yellowstone National Park, where bison have roamed continuously since prehistoric times. What makes this herd especially significant is its genetic purity—these animals are direct descendants of the early bison that once grazed freely across America’s grasslands.

Comments from Art Lovers

“Bison are dangerous. Don’t get “up close” to them. We ran the Bill Cody Ranch for a while. One day someone drove up in a minivan with a broken-off buffalo horn sticking out of the side of the van. They had been up in Yellowstone Park, pulled off the side of the road to look at buffalo, and had opened the side door to take pictures. The flash set one of them off, and he charged the van. They managed to get the door closed just before he hit.” — @Paul47, Gab

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet strength of the Texas Longhorn. Around our country homestead, it’s not unusual to drive by ranches where these iconic cattle graze or rest in the shade, their wide horns stretching like wings across the landscape. Some can span up to seven feet tip to tip—it’s something you have to see in person to truly appreciate.

The Longhorn is more than just a common ranch animal here in the Lone Star State—it’s a living symbol of Texas history and tradition. This piece was inspired by that legacy and the everyday presence of these animals across rural Texas.

Artist Reflections

Space has long beckoned humanity to look beyond the edge of the known world. It’s where science meets wonder, and where curiosity becomes ambition. The exploration of space isn’t just a physical journey—it’s a mirror held up to our need for perspective, for meaning, and for connection to something larger than ourselves. With ‘Spacewalker,’ I wanted to reflect that sense of orientation toward the unknown.

More About Spacewalkers

The subject of this painting—a spacewalker—represents a long line of astronauts who’ve ventured outside their spacecraft during missions. These extravehicular activities (EVAs) are complex, high-stakes operations requiring precision, training, and calm under pressure. Whether maintaining equipment, conducting research, or transitioning between station modules, each EVA pushes the limits of human capability.

So far, 129 American astronauts have performed EVAs. It’s a small group, but each one has played a role in shaping spaceflight history. For a list of all spacewalkers, see the link below:

About This Painting

A quiet kitchen moment, three aged jugs, and a weathered countertop — each bearing the marks of use, softened by time and memory.

Three rustic jugs rest on a weathered wooden kitchen countertop, set against a white plank wall with horizontal grooves. The hand-painted scene captures quiet domestic charm with soft edges, natural tones, and a warm, timeworn palette. Each jug is distinct in shape, size, and material—one is a two-toned stoneware moonshine jug with a rounded body and narrow neck. Another is a pewter-colored tin water pitcher with a wide spout and angular handle. The third is a small, dark brown ceramic container with a wire handle. Their aged surfaces suggest years of use—cool stoneware, muted metal, and glazed clay catching soft ambient light. Signed by the artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner, the signature ensures originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a sturdy 12″ by 9″ canvas board, this painting offers lasting durability and archival quality. Its realism and fine detail are preserved on a heavy-duty surface that should be framed before display. Artist Reflections

There’s something quietly comforting about old jugs — their worn surfaces, humble shapes, and the way they seem to hold stories as well as liquids. I’ve always been drawn to these kinds of objects: ceramic, tin, stoneware — each one with its own texture and history. They remind me of simpler times and the quiet dignity of everyday life.

‘Three Rustic Jugs’ has a folksy charm that I find deeply appealing. It’s not a grand scene, just three well-used containers resting on a weathered kitchen counter. But that simplicity is exactly what gives this piece its strength. The muted tones, the aged materials, the unpolished setting — they all work together to create a sense of warmth and nostalgia.

If you appreciate antiques and the beauty of domestic history, this painting will feel right at home in your space. It’s a quiet tribute to the kinds of objects that often go unnoticed yet carry so much meaning.

Artist Reflections

This painting was a joy to bring to life—not just for the gentle mood it carries, but because the young girl at its center has a personal connection to me. She’s the granddaughter of a friend I’ve known since high school, and with permission, I used a photo of her as reference. That familiarity gave the process an added layer of warmth—it felt like I was painting someone I already knew in spirit.

While the girl’s pose and expression come directly from the photo, I introduced lily pads, fish, and cattails to breathe life into the pond. These details weren’t just decorative—they brought movement, harmony, and a sense of quiet story to the scene. They helped transform a simple moment into something deeper and more inviting, one that encourages viewers to linger and connect.

About This Painting

This evocative composition invites viewers into a quiet rural setting, where a classic relic of the road rests beneath wide-open skies.

A once-proud 1934 Ford V8 sits quietly in the heart of a rural summer landscape. This model is similar to the one famously driven by Bonnie and Clyde, tying the scene to a storied moment in American history. Its weathered black finish is softened by sunlight and time. The paint has begun to peel, and the still posture suggests journeys long since past. Treelined hills embrace the car in a hush of green. Above, a wide blue sky stretches across the canvas, lending the scene a spacious calm. Nostalgia seeps from every brushstroke. The overall mood evokes serenity, memory, and a sense of forgotten adventure.

“Forgotten Roads of Bygone Days” is painted in oil on 24×18- inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The image extends around the edges for a clean frameless presentation and arrives unframed—perfect for tailoring to your personal style and space. Artist Reflections

This painting features a vintage Ford V8, the same type of car that helped make Bonnie and Clyde infamous in the early 1930s. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were notorious fugitives who roamed the central states of North America during the Great Depression, robbing and killing alongside their gang. Their crime spree ended dramatically when Texas lawmen ambushed the couple in their car, unleashing more than 100 armor-piercing bullets. Both died instantly at the roadside.

Bonnie and Clyde were laid to rest in separate Dallas cemeteries. Clyde’s gravestone reads, “Gone but not forgotten.” Today, their actual bullet-riddled death car is on display at Whiskey Pete’s Resort and Casino in Primm, Nevada. To learn more about the car and its legacy, visit Roadside America.

I was inspired to paint this piece not only for its connection to American history, but also for what it symbolizes—the passage of time and the stories we leave behind. Bonnie and Clyde met their end in Texas, just as the painting’s quiet scene hints at the closing chapters of an era. The title, Forgotten Roads of Bygone Days, carries that sense of lingering memory—where history fades but never fully disappears.

Artist Reflections

Space has always intrigued me—not as a dreamscape, but as a place grounded in realism and vast possibility. That’s the energy I tap into when painting celestial scenes like Asteroid Collision Course.

I rely on science-based sources—such as NASA photography and authentic astrophotography—as reference points to ensure that what I create feels plausible, even at a dramatic scale. This observational approach helps me construct scenes that are informed by genuine cosmic phenomena, not imaginative reinterpretations.

This particular painting was driven by motion and impact. The asteroid isn’t meandering; it’s moving with purpose. That idea of speed and direction is something I carefully built into every detail—from placement and scale to lighting and trajectory.

About This Painting

The trunk of a majestic shade tree rises strong, leaves dance lightly, and between them, blue sky appears—an invitation to pause and look up.

A towering shade tree dominates the canvas, its broad trunk stretching upward in warm tones of brown and muted gray that evoke quiet strength and natural age. From the trunk’s core, branches extend gracefully toward the upper edges, supporting a canopy of sunlit green leaves rendered in varying shapes and layers. Between them, delicate fragments of blue sky peek through, offering contrast and breath against the dense foliage. The perspective is upward-looking, placing the viewer at the foot of the tree, drawn into a hush of movement and light, where a gentle call to linger beneath summer’s canopy quietly unfolds. The painting is signed in the lower-right corner by the artist Teresa Bernard, affirming its authenticity.

Artist Reflections

It’s been a long, hot summer here in Texas, with temperatures often soaring past 100 degrees. Staying indoors with the air conditioner humming was the easiest way to escape the heat. However, sometimes I just had to get outside for a while—if only for a breath of fresh air and a moment of quiet. Usually, I could be found in the shade of the large tree next to our house.

There, in its cool shelter, I’d look up through the layers of green and watch the branches stretch skyward like open arms. Light would flicker through the canopy, and patches of blue peeked through the leaves like hidden windows to the sky and the Lord above. That upward view always struck me—peaceful, gentle, and grounding. It became the inspiration behind this painting.

A Favorite Poem

A beloved classic poem that echoes the spirit of this painting:

Trees
by Joyce Kilmer 1886 – 1918

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Artist Reflections

There’s something about an old farmhouse that feels familiar—like a memory you didn’t know you had. ‘Raggedy ol’ Farmhouse’ isn’t a tribute to grandeur or perfection; it’s a love letter to things that have endured. Its quiet resilience caught my eye—the way it stands, worn but still upright, as the lawn grows wild, remembering every footstep.

I set out to capture that gentle defiance—the charm tucked beneath years of weather and wear. To me, beauty doesn’t demand polish; it lives in what’s rugged, tired, and deeply rooted. I painted this piece for those, like myself, who find meaning in things that have lasted—objects and places that carry history, show their age with grace, and quietly reflect a life well lived.

Painting it felt like a conversation with the past. Every brushstroke made me pause and reflect—not just on this house, but on all the places that quietly carry history in their bones. I hope it brings a sense of ‘home’ to those who see it; however they define the word.

About This Painting

A sunflower is quietly portrayed from behind in this oil on canvas composition. Known for its cheerful spirit, the bloom is a meditative symbol of hope and warmth.

A bold sunflower turns away from the viewer, revealing the quiet beauty often hidden behind the bloom. In this original oil painting, the vibrant yellow petals are rendered with intricate detail, each brushstroke echoing the natural rhythm of the flower as it rises toward a sky-blue background. The textured involucral bracts at the base of the blossom add depth and realism, grounding the composition in organic structure. By choosing to portray the sunflower from behind, the painting offers a fresh perspective on a classic symbol of joy and optimism—one that speaks gently of resilience and the grace found in subtle angles.

“Sunflower From Behind” is part of a theme that captures the spirit and serenity of native blooms through fine oil painting. This piece is composed by hand using oil paints on a professional-quality gallery-wrapped canvas that measures 20 inches wide by 16 inches high and 1.5 inches deep. It arrives unframed, offering flexibility for personalized display, and is signed on the front lower left corner. Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet honesty in this pose—the way the sunflower turns away, not to hide, but to rise toward the light. Painting it from behind felt meaningful, like capturing a quiet act of devotion. There’s such reverence in the way sunflowers grow, always seeking the sun—always reaching upward with purpose. It’s no wonder they’ve become symbols of faith, loyalty, and longevity.

This composition allowed me to explore those themes in a gentle way. The upward lift of the petals, the soft curve of the stem, and that brilliant contrast against the sky—it all came together in a way that felt both grounded and spiritual. I didn’t want the painting to shout; I wanted it to speak softly, like a prayer in motion.
