Artist Reflections

The story behind this painting begins in the summer of 2016—the same year the American bison was officially named our national mammal. That summer, my family and I traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, and made a point to visit Custer State Park, where several herds of bison roam freely across the land.

I’ll never forget what the park ranger told us as we entered: “Keep your distance. This is their home. We’re the visitors.” That stayed with me. As we drove through the park, we were lucky enough to witness a herd crossing the road just feet from our vehicle. These animals were enormous, powerful, and breathtakingly calm. I remember wanting to step out of the car and get closer—but of course, that would’ve been foolish. Bison may appear docile, but they’re wild creatures, easily startled and fiercely protective.

That moment stayed with me long after we returned home. I’ve always been fascinated by the American bison, or buffalo as they are commonly called. Their strength, their history, and their quiet dignity have always appealed to me. A few years later, I painted this piece. This isn’t just a portrait of an animal; it’s a tribute to a memory, a legacy, and a presence that commands respect.

Modern cars have never held the same appeal for me as the automobiles of bygone days. Today, so many vehicles seem to share the same basic shapes and styling, with one manufacturer’s version looking much like another. Classic cars were different. They had personality. Their distinctive grilles, headlights, body lines, fenders, and other details gave each make and model a character all its own. You could often recognize what was coming down the road before you ever saw the name on it.

That individuality is part of what draws me to antique and vintage cars as painting subjects. They were designed in an era when an automobile could be practical transportation and still have a strong visual identity. Even after decades of age and weathering, much of that character remains.

The 1934 Ford V8 in ‘Forgotten Roads of Bygone Days’ has that kind of presence. Its traveling days may be behind it, but time hasn’t erased the qualities that make this classic Ford recognizable. That contrast between its weathered condition and the character it still possesses is what I wanted to capture on canvas—a reminder of a bygone era when cars didn’t all look alike.

Artist Reflections

It’s been a long, hot summer here in Texas, with temperatures often soaring past 100 degrees. Staying indoors with the air conditioner humming was the easiest way to escape the heat. However, sometimes I just had to get outside for a while—if only for a breath of fresh air and a moment of quiet. Usually, I could be found in the shade of the large tree next to our house.

There, in its cool shelter, I’d look up through the layers of green and watch the branches stretch skyward like open arms. Light would flicker through the canopy, and patches of blue peeked through the leaves like hidden windows to the sky and the Lord above.

That upward view always struck me—peaceful, gentle, and grounding. It became the inspiration for this painting. I wanted to capture that same feeling on canvas—the cool shade overhead, sunlight filtering through the leaves, and the simple pleasure of looking up into a beautiful old tree.

Artist Reflections

Sunflowers are one of those flowers everybody recognizes. That big yellow blossom with its dark center practically begs to be painted, and that’s usually the side most artists choose to show. But take a look at a sunflower from behind and there’s another side to its beauty that’s easy to miss.

That’s what caught my eye. The front may get all the glory, but I discovered the backside isn’t exactly lacking in personality. It’s different, unexpected, and interesting in a way I hadn’t really appreciated until I stopped and looked. I thought it deserved a little time in the spotlight too.

That’s the sunflower I wanted to paint. I moved in close and let the backside of the blossom fill the canvas, making the view itself the subject. “Sunflower From Behind” is my way of showing that sometimes there’s just as much beauty on the side we don’t usually stop to look at.
