Artist Reflections

We Texans are a proud bunch—we wear our heritage with heart, and one way we express that pride is by painting our flag right onto the barns and outbuildings that dot the countryside. Travel through the Lone Star State, and you’ll find the Texas flag gracing rooftops and facades like bold brushstrokes of identity across the land. It’s a sight as familiar as bluebonnets in spring and sunsets that stretch for miles.

The barn in this painting is one of those iconic landmarks, nestled alongside US Highway 377 just east of Stephenville. Its weathered timbers and boldly painted flag make it a favorite among locals and travelers alike. A rural tribute to Texas grit and spirit that I couldn’t resist capturing in oil.

About This Painting

A boy and his puppy watch the rippling water, surrounded by sand, trees, and the stillness of a peaceful afternoon.

A young boy sits quietly at the lake’s edge, dressed in a black sleeveless shirt and faded blue jean shorts. A bright red ball rests beside him in the sandy shore, adding a vivid pop of color to the tranquil scene. His black Lab puppy sits next to him, attentive and ready, ears perked in anticipation of more playtime. Both child and dog face the water, their backs to the viewer, as a small toy sailboat floats gently by on the shimmering surface.

The lake stretches out in glistening bands of vibrant blue and green, its surface catching light and soft movement from the drifting breeze. Clusters of lush trees line the far shore, their foliage dense and varied—deep emeralds mingle with softer, sunlit shades. Beyond, gently sloping mountains rise in the distance, brushed in dusky blue tones that fade into the horizon. Overhead, a sky filled with layered clouds casts subtle patterns of light and shadow, adding mood and depth to the tranquil scene. Artist Reflections

‘A Boy and His Dog’ is a quiet tribute to the days when life felt effortless, and wonder came without asking. As children, we moved through the world with open hearts and curious eyes. Finding joy in things as small as a puddle, a boat, a pet, or the feel of sunlight on our skin. Those moments didn’t need embellishment. They were complete in their simplicity.

I think we all need reminders like this now and then because life gets busy and tangled in grown-up things. But every now and then, it’s nice to pause and remember the ease of those early days. A summer afternoon could last forever, and happiness came easy.

This painting is my way of preserving that feeling—the simple happiness of childhood, when an afternoon by the water with a faithful dog at your side could feel like all you needed.
