Artist Reflections

I’ve always found the insect world fascinating—so many shapes, colors, and functions, each one designed with intention. The Monarch butterfly is one of the more beautiful ones. When I saw it land briefly on this orange flower, I knew I wanted to capture that moment. It wasn’t just the color or the composition—it was the sense of purpose in something so delicate. God created even the smallest creatures with care, and this painting is my way of honoring that.

Artist Reflections

The story behind this painting begins in the summer of 2016—the same year the American bison was officially named our national mammal. That summer, my family and I traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, and made a point to visit Custer State Park, where several herds of bison roam freely across the land.

I’ll never forget what the park ranger told us as we entered: “Keep your distance. This is their home. We’re the visitors.” That stayed with me. As we drove through the park, we were lucky enough to witness a herd crossing the road just feet from our vehicle. These animals were enormous, powerful, and breathtakingly calm. I remember wanting to step out of the car and get closer—but of course, that would’ve been foolish. Bison may appear docile, but they’re wild creatures, easily startled and fiercely protective.

That moment stayed with me long after we returned home. I’ve always been fascinated by the American bison, or buffalo as they are commonly called. Their strength, their history, and their quiet dignity have always appealed to me. A few years later, I painted this piece. This isn’t just a portrait of an animal; it’s a tribute to a memory, a legacy, and a presence that commands respect.

Comments from Art Lovers

“Bison are dangerous. Don’t get “up close” to them. We ran the Bill Cody Ranch for a while. One day someone drove up in a minivan with a broken-off buffalo horn sticking out of the side of the van. They had been up in Yellowstone Park, pulled off the side of the road to look at buffalo, and had opened the side door to take pictures. The flash set one of them off, and he charged the van. They managed to get the door closed just before he hit.” — @Paul47, Gab

About This Painting

Set against muted green tones, a flamingo’s warm orange plumage and lowered posture guide the eye to the chick beneath her wing.

A vivid orange flamingo is nestled in profile, her curved neck forming a gentle arc above a downy gray chick tucked beneath her wing. The chick’s tiny beak and head peek out from soft feathers, its body completely concealed by the mother’s protective embrace. Fine brushwork brings out subtle shifts in tone and texture across the flamingo’s feathers. A rich mottled green background suggests foliage, and its cooler tones contrast with the birds’ warm hues, allowing them to take visual precedence. Artist Reflections

I’ve wanted to paint a flamingo for a long time. Not because they’re trendy or exotic, but because their shape and color have always pulled me in—the vivid orange feathers, the long legs, and that graceful curve of the neck. But I didn’t want to paint just any flamingo. I waited until I found a moment that felt meaningful.

This one did. The adult bird is curved around her chick, wing lifted just enough to shelter it. That quiet gesture felt instinctive and tender—an expression of motherhood in its most natural form. It’s not dramatic, but it’s deeply felt. I wanted to capture that stillness, that connection, and let the composition speak for itself.

There’s something universal in the way animals care for their young. It’s simple, unspoken, and complete. That’s what I saw in this pose, and that’s what I tried to honor in the painting.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

Artist Reflections

Zebras have always intrigued me—their bold black-and-white stripes, so graphic and rhythmic, yet completely organic. Each one carries a pattern as unique as a fingerprint, and that individuality fascinates me. In ‘Eye of the Zebra,’ I wanted to move in close, making the eye the focal point and allowing the stripes surrounding it to become an important part of the composition. The eye is soft, steady, and quietly expressive—framed by contrast, but not overwhelmed by it.

There’s something meditative about painting an animal this way. Rather than portraying the entire zebra or placing it within an African landscape, I chose a tightly cropped view that concentrates attention on the animal’s gaze, distinctive markings, and individual character. This original zebra painting reflects my ongoing interest in African wildlife, while its close-up composition creates a more intimate connection between the animal and the viewer.

Artist Reflections

Ladybugs are everywhere—on windowsills, in gardens, tucked into childhood memories. But what caught my attention here wasn’t nostalgia. It was the way this one nearly vanished into the flower beneath it. Red on red. At first glance, the ladybug almost becomes part of the flower itself.

I chose this composition because I liked that subtle visual effect. There’s no dramatic gesture or exaggerated contrast. Instead, the ladybug invites a closer look, and that interplay between the insect and its surroundings is what made me want to paint it.

This is the second ladybug oil painting in my Insect Art Series. Like the other paintings in the series, it celebrates the smaller creatures found in nature and gives them a chance to take center stage on canvas.

A vivid red ladybug clings to a leafy green branch, its tiny legs grasping the stem with delicate precision and tension. The branch angles diagonally across the canvas, covered in small green leaves with visible veins and soft gradients of color. Signed by the artist Teresa Bernard in the bottom left corner, the mark confirms originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a 6 x 6-inch gallery-wrapped canvas. Its compact size makes it ideal for small spaces or intimate displays. The composition extends around the edges for a clean, finished look, so framing isn’t required unless you prefer it. It arrives unframed—perfect for tailoring to your personal taste and space. Artist Reflections

I’ve always had a fondness for ladybugs. They’re tiny, colorful creatures that are easy to recognize and usually welcome visitors in the garden. But what caught my attention about this particular ladybug wasn’t its bright red color or familiar black spots. It was the way it clung to the underside of a branch, its tiny legs holding tight while its body hung suspended beneath it.

There was something about that small act of effort that struck me. It wasn’t dramatic, but it felt familiar. We all have times when life tilts and shifts around us and all we can do is hang on. That simple connection is what made me want to paint it and ultimately gave the painting its name, ‘Ladybug #1 – Hanging on Tight.’

This became the first of two ladybug oil paintings in my Insect Art Series. Together, the two paintings explore these familiar little insects in very different ways.

Artist Reflections

Painting the ‘Texas Horned Lizard’—or horny toad, as we called them growing up in west Texas—was a joy that brought back a flood of childhood memories. Back then, these little spiked critters were everywhere. My friends and I would spot them often, scoop them up to play for a while, then gently let them go. They were just part of the landscape, as familiar as mesquite trees and dusty roads.

As an adult, I’ve noticed they’re not nearly as common. That got me wondering why, so I did a little digging. I learned that Texas horned lizard populations have declined in many areas of the state. Changes to their habitat and food supply, along with other environmental pressures, have made life more difficult for this once-familiar Texas reptile. Thankfully, efforts are underway to protect and restore their populations.

With this painting, I wanted to honor the Texas horned lizard as a unique and memorable part of our state’s wildlife. This small but distinctive creature has long been part of the Texas landscape, and I wanted to give it a place of its own on canvas.

Artist Reflections

A large white dog stands at the heart of this painting—possibly a Great Pyrenees, though I didn’t set out to depict a specific breed. Still, I can’t help but think of Lobo, our Pyrenees mix, who wandered up to our door one day and decided to stay. Living out in the country, we often find strays at our doorstep—dogs looking for shelter, food, or maybe just a little kindness. We never know where they come from, but we always try to help. Sometimes we’re able to reunite them with their owners. Other times, they become part of our family.

The dog in this painting isn’t Lobo, but something in its posture, its coat, its quiet presence reminds me of him. That kind of memory tends to find its way into the brushwork, whether I plan for it or not.

About This Painting

One snail, one leaf—nature’s pairing, quiet and deliberate.

A lone terrestrial snail, pale ecru in color, rests atop a vivid green leaf that spans the canvas. Its shell is tightly coiled, smooth, and subtly ridged, catching light with a soft sheen. The snail’s body is moist and slightly translucent, rendered with careful tonal shifts that suggest quiet movement. Veins run through the leaf beneath it, and its slight curve, along with tonal variations, suggests natural wear. A muted, unobtrusive background keeps the subject central and free from distraction. Signed in the lower left corner by Teresa Bernard, confirming originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a gallery-wrapped canvas measuring 6″ wide by 6″ high and .5″ deep. The canvas’ edges are painted for a finished look, allowing display without a frame if desired. Terrestrial Snail #1: Last Leaf arrives unframed, allowing for custom tailoring to your personal style and space. The artwork includes a Certificate of Authenticity, hand-signed by Teresa and embossed with her personal seal. The COA affirms authenticity, provenance, and lasting value.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet dignity of ordinary things, and this snail was no exception. There was something about the way it rested—unhurried, unbothered, perfectly placed on a single leaf—that made me stop and look closer. It wasn’t dramatic or symbolic. It was simply present. That kind of stillness speaks to me.

I chose to paint this snail not because it demanded attention, but because it held its own without asking. The soft ridges of its shell, the moist texture of its body, the vivid green beneath it—all of it felt like a moment worth preserving. In a world that rushes past the small and slow, I wanted to give this creature its due. Not as a curiosity, but as a subject with quiet authority.

Artist Reflections

I spotted him in the garden one morning—a bright yellow snail with bold brown stripes, inching his way up a slender branch. There was something oddly compelling about the scene. He wasn’t fast, he wasn’t flashy, but he was determined. That little climb, set against the quiet backdrop of leaves and light, held more tension than I expected.

I kept thinking about where he was headed. Would he reach the top? Was there even a top to reach? The moment felt unfinished, unresolved. That’s what stayed with me. The painting doesn’t answer the question—it holds it open. ‘Common Snail #2: Left Hanging’ isn’t just about the snail. It’s about effort without certainty, motion without conclusion. And maybe that’s why I painted him: to honor the small creatures who move forward anyway, even when the ending isn’t clear.
