Artist Reflections

The most eye-catching feature of this painting is that big orange moon in the night sky with an egret in silhouette flying by. Looking at it, one can easily imagine what it would be like to “fly away” to Earth’s only satellite.

The night sky has always fascinated me. I love looking up at it to see the vastness of outer space, the faraway planets, the Milky Way along with all the stars and constellations, and of course, Earth’s moon in whichever stage it happens to be in at the time. I especially love seeing our Moon shining so brightly it feels like the stars are holding their breath. That glow, that magic, is what inspired ‘Fly Me to the Moon.’

About This Painting

This original painting gives the impression that you could walk right up those steps.

“Up the Steps” presents a quiet architectural vignette—stucco walls painted pristine white, stair steps bathed in light, and a lone terracotta pot gently cast in shadow. The stairs ascend toward a destination just beyond view, suggesting movement and mystery within stillness. Above the potted plant, a blue-trimmed window punctuates the scene with calm contrast, while the artist’s signature, nestled in the lower left corner, marks the canvas with its origin. It’s a moment frozen between spaces, as if you might climb upward and step into a sun-washed silence.

Artist Reflections

‘Up the Steps’ began with a photograph—a quiet architectural moment that stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t elaborate or dramatic, but something about those stairs pulled me in. The way they rose gently into the light made me feel as though I could walk right up and disappear into that stillness. That sense of quiet movement is what captured my imagination.

As with most reference photos, I didn’t simply recreate it—I reshaped the composition to better serve the story I saw in it. I refined angles, softened light, and allowed the scene to breathe. My brush followed the geometry with care, but my goal was to evoke more than structure. I wanted to invite wonder: What lies beyond the last step? What kind of silence waits around the corner?

This painting isn’t just a study in architecture—it’s a meditation on possibility. With each stroke, I found myself leaning into the idea that some paths don’t need a destination to feel complete.

Artist Reflections

Autumn has always felt like a gentle reward after our long, hot Texas summers. There’s something so comforting in the cooler air and the way the landscape shifts into rich color — scarlet reds, fiery oranges, and golden yellows that seem to glow from within. Just behind our home, a small forest of hardwood trees fills the meadow, and every fall they put on their show. Watching those trees transform never gets old; it’s a quiet ritual I look forward to year after year. This painting is a love letter to that season — to the way nature softens, deepens, and reminds us to pause and take it in.

A Favorite Poem

A classic poem that echoes the quiet strength and emotional tone of this piece:

A Tree Design
by Arna Bontemps 1902 – 1973

A tree is more than a shadow
Blurred against the sky,
More than ink spilled on the fringe
Of white clouds floating by.
>A tree is more than an April design
Or a blighted winter bough
Where love and music used to be.
>A tree is something in me,
Very still and lonely now.

Artist Reflections

Zebras have always intrigued me—their bold black-and-white stripes, so graphic and rhythmic, yet completely organic. Each one carries a pattern as unique as a fingerprint, and that individuality fascinates me. In ‘Eye of the Zebra,’ I wanted to move in close, to let the viewer linger with a single gaze. The eye is soft, steady, and quietly expressive—framed by contrast, but not overwhelmed by it.

There’s something meditative about painting an animal this way. You’re not just capturing a likeness; you’re listening for presence. I wasn’t thinking about a safari or a sweeping landscape this time—I was thinking about stillness, about how a single moment can hold the weight of instinct and calm. This painting is part of my ongoing interest in African subjects, but it stands on its own: intimate, restrained, and quietly powerful.

About This Painting

This large oil painting is a realistic depiction of the church made famous by Vincent van Gogh during his time in Auvers, France.

Framed by gothic grandeur and quiet atmosphere, the church stands as the focal point in a composition that emphasizes structure and mood. Artist Reflections

Vincent van Gogh painted the Auvers Church in 1890, just weeks before his passing. That piece has long been one of my favorite pieces by this master of post-impressionism. It has such expressive energy and mood, I couldn’t help but wonder what the same church might look like through my own lens — one rooted in realism and quiet observation. So, I set out to reinterpret the very same Gothic church. The one nestled in the small French village of Auvers-sur-Oise, in my own style.

I’ve always admired Van Gogh’s ability to infuse emotion into architecture and landscape. Whether it’s his vibrant sunflowers or the solemn charm of this quaint village church, his work speaks to something deep and enduring. Though our styles are worlds apart—his expressive and emotive, mine grounded in realism—this painting is my tribute to Van Gogh’s enduring influence. It celebrates the graceful architecture and timeless spirit of Auvers, while honoring the inspiration his legacy continues to spark in my work.

Artist Reflections

‘Red and White Cosmos Flowers’ is a quiet little painting with a cheerful heart. I wanted to capture the simple elegance of cosmos blooms—the kind you might pass by without a second thought, but that have a certain charm if you stop and look. I arranged them in two small vases, letting the shapes and colors play off each other in an easy, balanced composition.

The red and white petals were chosen deliberately—they contrast just enough to keep things visually interesting without overwhelming the senses. And the background? That was all about pulling everything together. The vivid tone sets the stage, lifting the flowers forward and giving them space to stand out. It’s a painting that doesn’t fuss or shout but quietly celebrates natural beauty in an everyday moment.

Artist Reflections

Where I live, round hay bales are part of the everyday scenery—resting in freshly cut fields, tucked along fence lines, or nestled behind barns waiting to be fed out. You can’t drive far in rural east Texas without seeing them. They speak to the rhythm of farm life, the effort behind every harvest, and the kind of work that keeps things going quietly in the background.

When I created this piece, I wasn’t just painting hay—I was painting something familiar and grounding. It’s part of a series I call “Life in Texas.” Through these paintings, I try to capture small details that reflect something honest about our way of living. The round shape of the bales. Their golden color in the late-day sun. The open field. Each element holds a quiet sense of calm for me. They remind me of how simple things, like a field of hay, can carry the weight of tradition and purpose.

This painting was made to reflect that feeling. Not just what the land looks like—but how it feels to stand in it.

Under her left arm, she carries a white surfboard striped with bold orange bands, its curve echoing the distant waves ahead. Beach foliage borders the worn trail she follows, framing her quiet journey. Her back is turned to the viewer, inviting us to share her anticipation as ocean swells rise gently in the background. Artist Reflections

“Gone Surfing” is a simple yet evocative phrase that captures the essence of slipping away to the sea. It brings to mind sun-kissed beaches, the scent of saltwater spray, and the thrill of skimming across the ocean’s surface on a surfboard. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or someone who just dreams about it, those two little words evoke freedom, adventure, and the joy of riding the waves.

When I was a child growing up in Texas, the coast felt worlds away. My family didn’t live anywhere near the beach. But I’d watch reruns of movies and TV shows starring Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and all those teen surf icons. Their world fascinated me — carefree, sandy, and filled with sunshine. I often imagined what it might feel like to paddle out, catch a wave, and ride it in like they did.

Had my childhood taken place nearer the shore, maybe I’d have been that teenage girl in the painting — barefoot in the sand, surfboard tucked under arm, heading toward the swell. I never learned to surf, but the longing stuck with me. This painting is a glimpse into that dream — a quiet “what if” preserved in brushstrokes.

Artist Reflections

I love lighthouses! There’s something timeless and quietly profound about them that speaks to me on a deep level. I’ve long been drawn to their steadfast presence — guiding sailors through storms, standing watch over the restless sea, and embodying solitude and strength all at once. During my time living on the east coast, I had the pleasure of visiting several lighthouses along the rugged shores of the Outer Banks. Each one left an impression, not just for its architecture or setting, but for the sense of history and resilience it carried.

Naturally, many of those visits inspired my work, and over the years I’ve painted a number of the lighthouses I came to know while living nearby. Yet even beyond the familiar coastlines, there’s a whole world of lighthouses I’ve yet to see—places that stir my imagination and beckon me to paint them, even from afar.

The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse in Denmark is one of those places. Though I haven’t stood beneath its tower or felt the wind off its cliffs, it intrigued me with its windswept isolation and dramatic perch on shifting dunes. In a way, it became a source of inspiration from afar — a landmark that captured my imagination and lingered in my thoughts — and that’s what led me to capture it in this painting.

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each one holds its own unique history, character, and architectural identity — and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.

On the windswept sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. But time and tide have not been kind to its surroundings. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Coastal erosion and shifting sands pose a constant threat, with the shoreline receding at a rate of nearly 5 feet per year.

After its beacon was extinguished in 1968, the lighthouse’s buildings found new life as a museum and coffee shop. However, the buildings were abandoned years later as the sands encroached. Eventually, these smaller structures were demolished, damaged beyond repair by the relentless pressure of the dunes.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have plunged into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. Thanks to their efforts, the lighthouse now stands secure, with hopes that it will remain upright and intact until at least 2060.

Artist Reflections

Composing this tractor tire painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. I like to give myself challenges now and then. With this one, I set out to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I believe I achieved that goal.

What I like best about this painting are the various textures present in the composition — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusted metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many interesting things going on in this painting; it was a lot of fun to paint!

A tractor tire isn’t something most people imagine as the subject of a painting, yet here it is—center stage and full of personality. I can picture it hanging in a man cave, an office, or anywhere someone loves tractors, cars, or just the gritty charm of rural life.
