Artist Reflections

Painting the Texas Horned Lizard—or “horny toad,” as we called them growing up in west Texas—was a joy that brought back a flood of childhood memories. Back then, these little spiked critters were everywhere. My friends and I would spot them often, scoop them up to play for a while, then gently let them go. They were just part of the landscape, as familiar as mesquite trees and dusty roads.

As an adult, I’ve noticed they’re not nearly as common. That got me wondering why, so I did a little digging.

In Search of the Horny Toad

Turns out, about 70% of the Texas Horned Lizard’s diet consists of harvester ants. Over the years, their numbers have dropped by roughly 30%, largely due to pesticide use and the spread of invasive fire ants. Both wipe out harvester ant colonies, leaving the lizards without their primary food source. Today, the Texas horned lizard is a protected species. In Texas, it’s illegal to take, possess, transport, or sell them without a special permit.

Still, there’s hope. I was encouraged to read that efforts are underway to help them recover.

According to the August/September 2018 issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine:

“Texas Horned Lizards once occurred throughout Texas, but now only a few populations remain. Efforts to move Texas horned lizards from one location in Texas to another, with the hope of establishing new self-sustaining populations in previously occupied habitats, are underway. Several Texas zoos are also working to develop colonies for reintroduction programs. RAWA (Recovering America’s Wildlife Act) funding would pay for “lizard factories” to help with reintroduction efforts.”

I shared some of my findings on social media, and the responses surprised me.

One longtime friend told me her small Texas town hosts an annual horny toad celebration called ‘The Old Rip Festival.’ It’s named after a legendary lizard said to have survived 31 years sealed inside a cornerstone. She even sent me a link to the ‘Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine’ website, which dives into the lore and legacy of Old Rip.

Another follower chimed in, saying, “You still see these in west Texas and the Panhandle. Fire ants haven’t taken over every inch of ground as they have here, and harvester ants are still there, so that helps with the “horny toads.” Hope they make a comeback here someday.”

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet beauty of outer space—its scale, its stillness, and the way light behaves in the dark. In this painting, I wanted to explore the idea of a distant planet illuminated by two suns. In astronomy, this is known as a binary star system—two stars orbiting one another, often producing striking visual contrasts on surrounding celestial bodies. I found that concept intriguing and wanted to capture it in a way that felt both accurate and visually compelling. The soft crescent lighting effect adds a quiet tension, and it gave me an opportunity to create a scene that feels both dramatic and believable.

About This Painting

This large painting depicts the African Camelthorn Trees of Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park in a surrealistic composition, but it is actually a realistic depiction.

A mesmerizing desert landscape unfolds across the canvas. At center stage, a cluster of camelthorn trees stands lifeless — their dark, skeletal forms silhouetted against a towering dune aglow with bright orange light from the rising sun. Leafless branches claw upward in haunting stillness, preserved by the region’s hyper-arid climate. The desert floor beneath them is drenched in deep blue shadow, cast by a neighboring dune just beyond the viewer’s sightline. The visual contrast is striking; bold oranges, midnight blues, and inky blacks create a composition that appears surreal, yet remains grounded in realism. Artist Teresa Bernard’s signature appears in the lower left-hand corner of the canvas.

“Camelthorn Trees of Africa” is hand-painted on 24×24-inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The image continues around the edges for a polished, modern look, allowing for display with or without a frame. It arrives unframed — perfect for tailoring to your personal style. This one-of-a-kind original includes a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity embossed with Teresa’s personal seal.

Artist Reflections

At first glance, this painting might look a bit surreal — which is unusual for me. I’m a realist painter, and I like to depict things as they truly are. But sometimes nature presents something so visually bizarre it almost feels imagined. That’s what drew me to the camelthorn trees of Namibia. These long-dead trees are preserved by the extreme aridity of the desert, and when silhouetted against a glowing dune at sunrise, they look like something out of a dream. Yet every detail is real — that’s the magic.

I was especially drawn to the bold contrasts: orange light pouring across the dune, the shadowed blue floor, and the dark, twisted tree shapes caught between. Painting it was a joy — a reminder of how truth in nature can feel surreal, and how realism sometimes reveals the unexpected.

The planet’s curvature anchors the composition with a sense of scale and gravity. Artist Teresa Bernard signs the painting in the lower right corner, ensuring originality and authorship.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been fascinated by space and the dramatic events that unfold beyond our reach. This painting was inspired by the idea of an asteroid entering a planet’s atmosphere—a moment filled with motion, heat, and intensity. I wanted to capture that visual energy using bold oranges and yellows to reflect the fire and force of impact. Though small in size, the composition draws the eye and holds attention by design. It’s part of my Cosmos Series, which explores celestial subjects through realism and detail. I hope it sparks curiosity and brings a touch of cosmic drama to any space that displays it.

Artist Reflections

There’s something extraordinary about the smallest details in nature—how even the tiniest blossoms can reflect beauty with quiet strength. In ‘Dill Flowers Close-up,’ I wanted to draw attention to that understated elegance. These yellow blooms aren’t loud or showy, but when you take a closer look, they reveal an intricate design that feels both delicate and bold.

This painting is deeply personal to me. I’ve always found inspiration in God’s handiwork, especially in how He’s embedded harmony and creativity into every petal, stem, and shadow. It amazes me how something so simple as a dill flower can carry such poetic movement and structure—and that grand design is what I wanted to capture here.

The composition has a semi-abstract quality at first glance, and that’s part of its charm. But as you spend more time with it, the realism quietly emerges. It’s that moment of recognition—that “aha” when what seemed abstract resolves into something familiar—that I love most.

Artist Reflections

‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #2’ is part of my Family Heirlooms Series, inspired by the everyday objects that once filled our homes with quiet purpose. I chose this title because thread is no longer sold on wooden spools—a change that marks the shift from past to present. Our great-grandmothers likely used thread spun on wood, but today it’s sold on plastic instead.

Although manufacturers no longer make wooden thread spools, that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their usefulness. Their sturdy design and simple charm make them ideal for repurposing, long after the thread is gone.

As a child, I found endless ways to play with empty wooden spools. I strung them together and used them to make necklaces. When I played with my Barbie dolls, I would use them for doll furniture, among other things.

Vintage wooden spools also lend themselves to a wide range of arts and crafts projects. With a little imagination, they can be transformed into decorative pieces or repurposed in creative ways that give them new life. Use them on your own, or incorporate them into a project your children can enjoy. Better yet, make it a shared activity—something you and your children can create together.

About This Painting

With gentle tones and thoughtful composition, this still life honors the timeless beauty of domestic craftsmanship.

Two antique wooden spools of sewing thread sit side by side—one wound in rich red, the other in deep blue. A slender sewing needle pierces the blue spool at an angle, catching the light with a subtle metallic glint. The background is a soft, neutral gray that gently recedes, allowing the spools to take center stage. Each spool shows signs of age—faint nicks, worn edges, and patina that hint at years of use. A classic still life composition, the painting is signed by the artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner, ensuring originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a 6″ × 6″ gallery-wrapped canvas, the artwork is compact yet visually striking. The canvas edges are painted, allowing for a clean, modern presentation with or without a frame. It arrives unframed—perfect for tailoring to your personal style and space. A customized Certificate of Authenticity is included, hand-signed by Teresa and embossed with her personal seal. This guarantees authenticity, provenance, and lasting value for collectors and art lovers alike.

Artist Reflections

‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #1’ is part of my Family Heirlooms Series. It was created to honor a quiet shift in domestic history—back when thread came on wooden spools instead of plastic. Our great-grandmothers likely used these vintage sewing notions in their needlework, and today, they’ve become charming relics of a bygone era.

Wooden spools of thread, once common in sewing boxes, are now over 50 years old and considered collectible antiques. By the time our mothers and grandmothers were sewing, plastic had taken over—more practical for manufacturers, but far less sentimental. I still remember playing with empty wooden spools as a child in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, when my grandmother taught me to sew doll clothes, I’d rummage through her sewing box, searching for just the right color of thread. Every now and then, I’d find a wooden spool tucked among the newer plastic ones—a small treasure from the past.

Wooden sewing spools quietly disappeared in the 1970s, phased out in favor of manufacturing efficiency. But they carry a kind of emotional weight, don’t they? If you happen to come across one, don’t toss it aside. These little pieces of history still hold value—not just monetary, but sentimental. Their worth lies in the stories they hold.

Artist Reflections

This painting came together with a sense of ease and joy. I spotted the yellow rose blossom and felt immediately drawn to its bold color and gentle shape. It was full of personality. The petals opened just enough to show off their golden curves, and I could already picture them filling the canvas. I didn’t sketch or plan; I just started painting, letting the rose lead the way. It had a brightness to it that made the whole studio feel lighter.

What I love most is how something this small can feel so complete. It doesn’t need drama or embellishment—just a single bloom, painted honestly. That’s where the beauty is. I wasn’t aiming for perfection, just a true and simple portrait of something that caught my eye and lifted my spirit. It’s moments like this that remind me why I paint.

About This Painting

One snail, one leaf—nature’s pairing, quiet and deliberate.

A lone snail, pale ecru in color, rests atop a vivid green leaf that spans the canvas. Its shell is tightly coiled, smooth, and subtly ridged, catching light with a soft sheen. The snail’s body is moist and slightly translucent, rendered with careful tonal shifts that suggest quiet movement. Veins run through the leaf beneath it, and its slight curve, along with tonal variations, suggests natural wear. A muted, unobtrusive background keeps the subject central and free from distraction. Signed in the lower left corner by Teresa Bernard, confirming originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a gallery-wrapped canvas measuring 6″ wide by 6″ high and .5″ deep. The canvas’ edges are painted for a finished look, allowing display without a frame if desired. Snail #1: Last Leaf arrives unframed, allowing for custom tailoring to your personal style and space. The artwork includes a Certificate of Authenticity, hand-signed by Teresa and embossed with her personal seal. The COA affirms authenticity, provenance, and lasting value.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet dignity of ordinary things, and this snail was no exception. There was something about the way it rested—unhurried, unbothered, perfectly placed on a single leaf—that made me stop and look closer. It wasn’t dramatic or symbolic. It was simply present. That kind of stillness speaks to me.

I chose to paint this snail not because it demanded attention, but because it held its own without asking. The soft ridges of its shell, the moist texture of its body, the vivid green beneath it—all of it felt like a moment worth preserving. In a world that rushes past the small and slow, I wanted to give this creature its due. Not as a curiosity, but as a subject with quiet authority.
