This large oil painting is a realistic version of Vincent van Gogh’s church which he made famous while living in Auvers, France.

An original landscape painting of van Gogh’s church. This painting depicts the village church in Auvers, France made famous by Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. The church gives this painting a somewhat gothic feel with its stone walls, large-scale windows, and the tall and imposing tower that rises into the sky. Hand-painted and signed in the bottom corner on the left side by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

This painting can add style to any wall or space in your home or workspace. It is painted by hand on gallery-wrapped stretched canvas permitting the artist to continue the composition to the sides of the painting. Van Gogh’s Church won’t need to be framed unless you want it to be. It will look beautiful wherever you want to display it. Includes an official Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

Artist Comments

While Vincent van Gogh was living in France, he painted his famous Auvers Church painting in his own post-impressionist style. I thought it would be fun to paint the same church only in my own realistic style.

The Gothic church depicted in this painting was initially painted and made famous by Vincent van Gogh in June 1890. Van Gogh’s church is located in the small village of Auvers, France, where he lived before his death. I wanted to do my own rendition of this lovely church, and the results of that desire are what you see here. Even though our painting styles are vastly different, Van Gogh is one of my favorite Old Masters. From his famous sunflowers painting to that lovely church in the village where he lived, I love much of Van Gogh’s work.

I love lighthouses! While living on the east coast, I had the opportunity to visit several of them on the shores of the Outer Banks. I also enjoy painting them and have done so numerous times throughout my fine art career. Several of those paintings were of lighthouses I had visited while living nearby. There are, however, many others in this big world that I have yet to visit and hope to do so someday. One such lighthouse is the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. It is the subject of this painting.

—Teresa Bernard

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each lighthouse has its unique history, character, and architectural design and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.

On the sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Shifting sands and coastal erosion are major issues in the area. The coast is eroding at a rate of 4.9 feet per year.

The lighthouse ceased operating in 1968. Its buildings were then used as a museum and coffee shop for a number of years before being abandoned due to shifting sands. The small buildings were later demolished after being severely damaged by the sand pressure.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have fallen into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. The relocation is expected to ensure the lighthouse’s survival until at least 2060.

One summer, my husband, Robert, and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was only two hours away from the OBX (Outer Banks). Currituck Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were excited to discover that visitors can climb its 220 steps to the top and look at the spectacular view. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse depicts the fun time we had on that trip.

More About the Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at Whale Head Bay in Corolla, NC on the northern end of the “Outer Banks.” Its distinct unpainted natural red brick appearance contrasts with fellow lighthouses along the North Carolina coast, which are painted in striking black and white. The lighthouse was constructed in 1875 and is still being used today to light the dark stretches of the southern Atlantic coastline. Annually the lighthouse welcomes an average of 185,000 visitors.

Artist Comments

I’m a sucker for old country barns. They have a certain charm that appeals to me, especially when they’re old and weathered.  And when the composition allows, I love to include them in my landscape paintings.

The Broadside of a Barn is a country landscape painting. To create an interesting effect, I painted this composition with a tight crop. The crop gives the impression that the painting is cut in half diagonally from corner to corner, creating two contrasting triangles. The upper triangle features organic shapes, whereas the lower triangle consists of geometric, manmade forms.

This painting appeals to me because of the many contrasts present within its composition. For example, near vs. far, organic vs. manufactured, curved vs. straight, round vs. square, dark vs. light, etc. Can you find other contrasts?

My favorite season of the year is autumn. The crisp cool air that follows a hot summer is incredibly refreshing. And the beautiful fall colors never fail to brighten my day.

I also love log cabins in a rustic setting. A vacation cabin such as this one, nestled away from it all, would be ideal! Is there any wonder why I would do this log cabin painting?

Artist Comments

For those who may not know this and for those who do, we Texans are a proud bunch, and we love our state. One way we show off our Texas pride is by painting our beloved flag on our barns and outbuildings for all to see. It would be a rare thing indeed to travel throughout the Lone Star State and not see a barn or some other outbuilding painted up with the Texas Flag.

The barn in the painting above is a well-known landmark on US Highway 377, just east of Stephenville, Texas.

—Teresa Bernard

About the Texas Flag

Flag of TexasThe Texas flag, also known as the “Lone Star Flag,” was adopted in 1845 when Texas became the 28th state. It is a rectangle that has a width-to-length ratio of two to three. It has a vertical blue field of color and two horizontal color fields, one white and the other red. The flag also sports a single white star which is located in the center of the blue field. This lone star symbolizes “ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, state, and country.”

Each color field in the flag symbolizes the following:

    • Blue stands for loyalty
    • White represents purity
    • Red is for bravery
