About This Painting

A weathered rowboat rests quietly by the edge of a pier, framed by drifting lily pads and gentle morning reflections.

A lonely rowboat, aged and wooden, sits calmly moored alongside a weathered pier. The vessel’s surface is textured with painterly strokes that suggest gentle wear and use. Around it, lily pads drift casually across the water, their rounded forms creating a soft contrast against the linear planks of the dock. Reflections shimmer below—muted blues, silvers, and greens—giving the impression of a quiet, still lake under morning light. The composition is centered, balanced, and naturalistic, with subtle ripples and shadows adding depth. This piece is signed by marine artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner, anchoring her authorship into the scene.

Painted in oil on a gallery-wrapped canvas measuring 12″ wide by 12″ high and 1.5″ deep, “Rowboat at the Pier” carries its composition around the sides for a dimensional, frameless presentation. Artist Reflections

Artists frequently draw inspiration from their surroundings, and I’m no different. We live out in the country. One of our neighbors lives down the road and around the corner from us. He has a large pond near the road with a small dock and a rowboat tied to it. Across from him is another neighbor who also has a pond near the road. It’s a smaller pond with lily pads. We pass by these two ponds almost every day on our way to and from our place to the nearby towns. Over time, they’ve become familiar little scenes that catch my eye, no matter how many times I pass them. The inspiration for this painting came from our neighbor’s ponds. There’s a quiet beauty in them that I felt compelled to capture on canvas.

Artist Reflections

Tropical sunsets have a way of stopping you in your tracks. It’s not just the colors — those deep oranges, fiery reds, and soft golden hues — it’s the salty air, the feel of warm sand between your toes, and the soothing sound of waves rolling in. Together, they create one peaceful moment that makes you slow down and take it all in.

Most of us have watched a sunset (or sunrise) that left us speechless — whether on a far-off beach or just sitting in your backyard. It doesn’t really matter where you are; when the sky lights up with those vibrant colors, everything else fades away. That’s the essence I wanted to capture in Sunset in the Tropics — a quiet invitation to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty around you, wherever you happen to be.

About This Painting

A large oil painting captures the bow of a wooden boat in a tightly cropped composition. Deliberate brushstrokes enhance the geometry and emphasize the quiet focus of the scene.

An original oil painting showcases the bow of a weathered wooden boat, closely cropped to draw attention to its texture and form. Angled diagonally into the scene, the vessel is framed by light and shadow that accentuate the warmth of aged wood and the cool tones of still water below. Sunlight grazes the boat’s forward edge, casting deep, angular shadows across the calm surface. Each brushstroke is placed with care to enhance tonal harmony and realism. Artist Teresa Bernard signs the piece in the lower-left corner.

Composed on an 18×18-inch gallery-wrapped canvas that is 1.5 inches deep, the painting is stretched across sturdy wooden stretcher bars. The scene continues cleanly around all edges, making it suitable for display with or without a frame. Completed in 2021, the artwork is accompanied by a customized Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed and stamped with Teresa’s personal embossed seal to guarantee its originality.

“Bow of the Boat” exemplifies Teresa’s gift for finding elegance in simplicity. This painting speaks to those who appreciate tranquility, craftsmanship, and the art of subtle storytelling. Artist Reflections

In a world dominated by modern materials, a traditional wooden boat stands as a quiet testament to craftsmanship and timelessness. That sense of enduring beauty is what drew me to this subject.

Artists often find inspiration through others, and ‘Bow of the Boat’ traces back to one of my early art teachers—a mentor whose love for painting boats quietly left its mark on me. I remember how he would often isolate just one section of the vessel, cropping away the rest to highlight the unique lines and textures. That concept stayed with me, and I’ve carried it forward here, focusing only on the bow. I wanted to spotlight its warm wood tones and the way sunlight grazes across its surface, allowing the boat to speak for itself through thoughtful composition and evocative light.

This piece is part of the Boat Series, which explores the quiet elegance found in everyday nautical forms. With this painting, I aim to create a moment of pause—one that encourages viewers to look closer, reflect deeper, and feel something familiar yet unexpected.

Artist Reflections

I love lighthouses! There’s something timeless and quietly profound about them that speaks to me on a deep level. I’ve long been drawn to their steadfast presence — guiding sailors through storms, standing watch over the restless sea, and embodying solitude and strength all at once. During my time living on the east coast, I had the pleasure of visiting several lighthouses along the rugged shores of the Outer Banks. Each one left an impression, not just for its architecture or setting, but for the sense of history and resilience it carried.

Naturally, many of those visits inspired my work, and over the years I’ve painted a number of the lighthouses I came to know while living nearby. Yet even beyond the familiar coastlines, there’s a whole world of lighthouses I’ve yet to see—places that stir my imagination and beckon me to paint them, even from afar.

The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse in Denmark is one of those places. Though I haven’t stood beneath its tower or felt the wind off its cliffs, it intrigued me with its windswept isolation and dramatic perch on shifting dunes. In a way, it became a source of inspiration from afar — a landmark that captured my imagination and lingered in my thoughts — and that’s what led me to capture it in this painting.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each one holds its own unique history, character, and architectural identity — and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.

On the windswept sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. But time and tide have not been kind to its surroundings. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Coastal erosion and shifting sands pose a constant threat, with the shoreline receding at a rate of nearly 5 feet per year.

After its beacon was extinguished in 1968, the lighthouse’s buildings found new life as a museum and coffee shop. However, the buildings were abandoned years later as the sands encroached. Eventually, these smaller structures were demolished, damaged beyond repair by the relentless pressure of the dunes.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have plunged into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. Thanks to their efforts, the lighthouse now stands secure, with hopes that it will remain upright and intact until at least 2060.

Artist Reflections

The Sea of Galilee has always captured my imagination—not just as a beautiful lake in Israel, but as a place woven into the life of Jesus. It’s nestled between the Galilee region and the Golan Heights, fed by the Jordan River, and though it’s only about 13 miles long, it’s full of meaning.

What moved me to paint it was my love of God’s word. I’ve read those passages so many times—where Jesus walked along the shore, taught the crowds, called His first disciples. I picture Simon Peter and Andrew dropping their nets, that quiet moment filled with awe and purpose. It’s incredible to think that such a seemingly peaceful place held moments that changed the world.

I’ve never been to Israel, but I hope to go someday. It’s the homeland of God’s chosen people and feels close, even from afar. For this piece, I used a reference photo from Todd Bolen’s ‘Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.’ Todd was kind enough to let me use his photos in my Bible land paintings, and I’m so grateful. They help me portray these places with reverence and accuracy.

Matthew 4:13–22 describes how Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. It was along the Sea of Galilee that He called His first disciples—Simon (also called Peter), Andrew, James, and John. I wanted this painting to reflect not just the geography, but the spiritual weight of what happened here. It’s more than a lake—it’s a place where heaven touched earth.

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Artist Reflections

One summer, my husband Robert and I loaded up the kids and headed off for an adventure on the Outer Banks (OBX) to discover the lighthouses we’d heard so much about. We were living in Virginia at the time, while Robert was serving in the military and was stationed just two hours away from the OBX.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse was our first stop and the favorite of all the lighthouses we visited that fun-filled weekend. We were thrilled to discover we could climb the 220 steps to take in the breathtaking view from the top. We’ve been back to this lighthouse several times since that first trip, and we always enjoy seeing it again. This painting is a personal tribute to that unforgettable journey and the warm memories it left behind.

About This Painting

Hammerhead sharks move in quietly above—and you’re directly beneath them.

Below them, the coral-covered ocean floor anchors the scene with textured detail and quiet depth. Light and shadow play across the canvas, creating a sense of movement and immersion. Artist Reflections

Swimming with sharks? Not exactly my idea of a relaxing afternoon—but that’s the kind of moment I wanted to capture. This painting puts you just beneath a formation of hammerhead sharks, close enough to feel their presence and know you’re not in charge down there. There’s a mix of awe and unease—majestic creatures drifting overhead, and you’re exposed in their world. Everything is bathed in that unmistakable aquamarine hue that comes from the ocean water all around, and I leaned into that with a monochromatic palette to reflect that natural filter and keep the focus on mood and movement.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

What is a Monochromatic Painting?

A monochromatic painting uses just one color—exploring its shades, tints, and tones to create depth and detail. Without the distraction of multiple hues, this approach highlights how light and value shape the subject. Even small shifts in saturation or intensity can add contrast, movement, and mood. It’s a simple technique, but when done well, it reveals surprising complexity and visual richness.

About This Painting

Soft surf kisses the alabaster shore, where a lone coconut tree leans into the hush of island breeze.

A single coconut tree anchors the foreground with graceful, wind-swept fronds reaching toward a sky tinged with soft coastal haze. Fine grains of white sand stretch gently into the distance, guiding the eye toward a rustic pier that extends into the horizon. At its end sits a palapa-style shelter with a thatched roof made of natural fibers that blend seamlessly with the tropical setting. Light flows from left to right, casting gentle shadows across the beach and warming the tree’s textured trunk. Teresa Bernard’s signature in the lower left corner serves as a mark of authenticity, verifying this piece as an original work of art from her studio.

Hand-painted in oils on high-quality gallery wrap canvas, the artwork measures 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall. Its composition continues naturally around the canvas edges for display without a frame—though it also accommodates traditional framing beautifully, if desired. The painting includes a customized Certificate of Authenticity bearing the artist’s handwritten signature and embossed seal, providing formal verification of its provenance.

“Kokomo Beach” captures the distinctive spirit that defines the theme, shaped by Teresa’s signature realism style. This inviting artwork evokes calm and possibility—an oasis for those drawn to the quiet beauty of coastal life.

Artist Reflections

‘Kokomo Beach’ was painted with the spirit of escape in mind. It was inspired by The Beach Boys and their dreamy hit, Kokomo. The song paints a picture of a tropical paradise off the Florida Keys, where two lovers escape “to get away from it all” and rediscover the joy of falling in love. I found that idea enchanting: a perfect hideaway where palm trees sway and troubles melt into the shoreline. That sense of carefree serenity is what I hoped to capture on canvas.

Whether you’ve heard the song a hundred times or it’s brand new to you, I invite you to take a moment, soak it in, and let it set the tone for this tranquil seaside scene. Click the link below to enjoy The Beach Boys’ “Kokomo.”
