My Christian Art Series

Christian art seriesChristian Art — A Place Where Faith and Creativity Intertwine

This is my Christian Art Series—a collection of paintings by me that are inspired by faith and devotion. Through this series, I channel my artistic abilities to capture the beauty and truth of the Most High God.

Creator God is the ultimate artist weaving His masterpiece across the universe. From the cosmic swirls of galaxies to the rugged peaks of mountains, from the ocean’s deepest secrets to the delicate flutter of a butterfly’s wing. His artistry is evident everywhere.

Our Heavenly Father and my Christian faith are profoundly important to me. So, it feels only natural that I’d turn my beliefs, experiences, and devotion into canvas art. God has blessed me in so many ways and artistic talent is among those blessings. I would be remiss not using it for His glory.

For me, creating Christian art is an act of worship. It’s a way to honor the Savior and encourage others to connect with Him too. It serves as a powerful tool to convey spiritual messages, share the Gospel, and engage with non-believers.

In my Christian-themed paintings, I explore a range of subjects from biblical landscapes and locations to depictions of church buildings and theological concepts.  As you gaze upon my Christian art, may your heart recognize the whispers of grace and the hues of redemption. These paintings are more than pigment—they’re invitations to encounter the God of the Universe.

The Why of Christian Art

Christian art still life painting
The Communion Table by Teresa Bernard

Christian art—what is it? And why do artists create it?

Christian art is a form of religious or sacred art that draws its inspiration from the Bible and theological concepts. It weaves narratives of creation, redemption, and salvation through Jesus Christ, while serving a profound purpose within the tapestry of faith and cultural identity.

Christian art is created by artists who wish to express their faith, explore spiritual truths, and glorify God through their creativity. Let’s explore the why of Christian art.

Spiritual Expression

Christian artists use their creative talents to express their beliefs, experiences, and devotion to the Almighty God. Through visual arts like painting, sculpture, and iconography, they communicate their understanding of biblical narratives, theological concepts, and the Christian experience.

Worship and Devotion

Creating religious art is often seen as an act of worship. Artists believe that their work can honor the Lord God and inspire others to connect with Him. By depicting biblical scenes, saints, or religious symbols, they participate in a form of spiritual devotion.

Evangelism and Apologetics

Some Christian artists create art with the purpose of evangelizing or defending their faith. Thereby, art can serve as a powerful tool to convey spiritual messages, share the Gospel, and engage with non-believers. It invites viewers to contemplate deeper truths.

Cultural Engagement

God is the ultimate Creator, and Christian artists recognize their role as co-creators. They engage with culture, using their art to reflect God’s beauty and truth. Art becomes a way to participate in the ongoing story of redemption.

Symbolism and Meaning

Christian art often employs symbolism. For example, a cross can allude to the death of Christ and redemption, while bread and wine evoke communion with God. Artists infuse their work with layers of meaning, inviting viewers to explore spiritual dimensions.

Narratives and Parallels

Early religious art focused on typological narratives, drawing parallels between Old Testament stories and events in the life of Christ. Over time, artists depicted miracles, the crucifixion, and other significant moments from the Bible.

In Conclusion

Remember, sacred art isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a way for artists to engage with their faith, communicate profound truths, and contribute to the rich tapestry of Christian culture. So, whether it’s a vibrant stained-glass window, a serene Madonna and Child painting, or a contemporary worship song, Christian art continues to inspire and connect believers across generations.

An original landscape painting of van Gogh’s church. This painting depicts the village church in Auvers, France made famous by Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Artist Comments

While Vincent van Gogh was living in France, he painted his famous Auvers Church painting in his own post-impressionist style. I thought it would be fun to paint the same church only in my own realistic style.

The Gothic church depicted in this painting was initially painted and made famous by Vincent van Gogh in June 1890. Van Gogh’s church is located in the small village of Auvers, France, where he lived before his death. I wanted to do my own rendition of this lovely church, and the results of that desire are what you see here. Even though our painting styles are vastly different, Van Gogh is one of my favorite Old Masters. From his famous sunflowers painting to that lovely church in the village where he lived, I love much of Van Gogh’s work.

Artist Comments

The Sea of Galilee is a large freshwater lake located in northeast Israel, between the Golan Heights and the Galilee region. The Jordan River is its primary source of water. The lake is approximately 13 miles long and 8 miles wide.

My love of God’s word and Bible readings about Jesus inspired this painting of the famous Sea of Galilee. Israel is very important to me because it is home to God’s chosen people. I’ve never been to Israel, but it’s somewhere I’d like to visit someday. This painting was composed using a reference photo from the “Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.” The photographer, Todd Bolen, graciously permitted me to use his photographs for any of my Bible land paintings.

According to Matthew 4:13-22, this historic biblical location is where Jesus began His ministry and called His first disciples. This passage tells us Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. While walking along the Sea of Galilee, He called the first four of His disciples Simon (also called Peter), Andrew, James, and John.

“I love it and looked at the site. The “Sea of Galilee at Capernaum” put me in mind of something by Turner or some of the Hudson River schools. Wonderful stuff.” — josisenberg, SciFi & Fantasy Writers, Gab

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Another [painting] that really caught my eye especially is the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum–the light in the sky is particularly indicative of something spiritual, even if one didn’t know a thing about the religious significance of the place.” — Elena M., Columbia, MD

Artist Comments

This Calvary sunset painting is a religious-themed landscape painting portraying the cross in silhouette against a colorful evening sky. One should not consider this painting as a literal representation of the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Instead, it depicts that moment in time just after the disciples took His lifeless body down from the cross.

The Holy Bible tells us about this momentous historical event throughout its pages. From Scripture, we learn that Jesus Christ endured the crucifixion from approximately 9 AM until 3 PM and that His dead body was removed from the cross just before sundown.

The four New Testament Gospels also describe a supernatural phenomenon that occurred at the moment of His death.

—Teresa Bernard

What we Learn from the Four Gospels

    • Matthew mentions an earthquake, the opening of the saints’ tombs in the vicinity, and the resurrected saints making an appearance in Jerusalem.
    • Mark reveals that darkness spread throughout the land, and the temple veil was ripped in two.
    • Luke tells us Jesus was crucified with criminals and that the Roman soldiers mocked Him and cast lots for His clothing.
    • John describes the soldiers twisting a crown of thorns together and putting it on Jesus’ head; and that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, which means the place of the Skull.
