Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet strength of the Texas Longhorn. Around our country homestead, it’s not unusual to drive by ranches where these iconic cattle graze or rest in the shade, their wide horns stretching like wings across the landscape. Some can span up to seven feet tip to tip—it’s something you have to see in person to truly appreciate.

The Longhorn is more than just a common ranch animal here in the Lone Star State—it’s a living symbol of Texas history and tradition. This piece was inspired by that legacy and the everyday presence of these animals across rural Texas.

About This Painting

A sunflower is quietly portrayed from behind in this oil on canvas composition. Known for its cheerful spirit, the bloom is a meditative symbol of hope and warmth.

A bold sunflower turns away from the viewer, revealing the quiet beauty often hidden behind the bloom. In this original oil painting, the vibrant yellow petals are rendered with intricate detail, each brushstroke echoing the natural rhythm of the flower as it rises toward a sky-blue background. The textured involucral bracts at the base of the blossom add depth and realism, grounding the composition in organic structure. By choosing to portray the sunflower from behind, the painting offers a fresh perspective on a classic symbol of joy and optimism—one that speaks gently of resilience and the grace found in subtle angles.

“Sunflower From Behind” is part of a theme that captures the spirit and serenity of native blooms through fine oil painting. This piece is composed by hand using oil paints on a professional-quality gallery-wrapped canvas that measures 20 inches wide by 16 inches high and 1.5 inches deep. It arrives unframed, offering flexibility for personalized display, and is signed on the front lower left corner. A hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the painting to verify its originality and provenance.

This unique sunflower painting invites the viewer to pause and reconsider how beauty reveals itself—sometimes not in bold displays, but in the quiet turning away. Whether displayed on its own or paired with complementary works from the series, it brings an uplifting presence to any space.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been drawn to the quiet honesty in this pose—the way the sunflower turns away, not to hide, but to rise toward the light. Painting it from behind felt meaningful, like capturing a quiet act of devotion. There’s such reverence in the way sunflowers grow, always seeking the sun—always reaching upward with purpose. It’s no wonder they’ve become symbols of faith, loyalty, and longevity.

This composition allowed me to explore those themes in a gentle way. The upward lift of the petals, the soft curve of the stem, and that brilliant contrast against the sky—it all came together in a way that felt both grounded and spiritual. I didn’t want the painting to shout; I wanted it to speak softly, like a prayer in motion.

Artist Reflections

Where I live, round hay bales are part of the everyday scenery—resting in freshly cut fields, tucked along fence lines, or nestled behind barns waiting to be fed out. You can’t drive far in rural east Texas without seeing them. They speak to the rhythm of farm life, the effort behind every harvest, and the kind of work that keeps things going quietly in the background.

When I created this piece, I wasn’t just painting hay—I was painting something familiar and grounding. It’s part of a series I call “Life in Texas.” Through these paintings, I try to capture small details that reflect something honest about our way of living. The round shape of the bales. Their golden color in the late-day sun. The open field. Each element holds a quiet sense of calm for me. They remind me of how simple things, like a field of hay, can carry the weight of tradition and purpose.

This painting was made to reflect that feeling. Not just what the land looks like—but how it feels to stand in it.

Artist Reflections

The Sea of Galilee has always captured my imagination—not just as a beautiful lake in Israel, but as a place woven into the life of Jesus. It’s nestled between the Galilee region and the Golan Heights, fed by the Jordan River, and though it’s only about 13 miles long, it’s full of meaning.

What moved me to paint it was my love of God’s word. I’ve read those passages so many times—where Jesus walked along the shore, taught the crowds, called His first disciples. I picture Simon Peter and Andrew dropping their nets, that quiet moment filled with awe and purpose. It’s incredible to think that such a seemingly peaceful place held moments that changed the world.

I’ve never been to Israel, but I hope to go someday. It’s the homeland of God’s chosen people and feels close, even from afar. For this piece, I used a reference photo from Todd Bolen’s ‘Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.’ Todd was kind enough to let me use his photos in my Bible land paintings, and I’m so grateful. They help me portray these places with reverence and accuracy.

Matthew 4:13–22 describes how Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. It was along the Sea of Galilee that He called His first disciples—Simon (also called Peter), Andrew, James, and John. I wanted this painting to reflect not just the geography, but the spiritual weight of what happened here. It’s more than a lake—it’s a place where heaven touched earth.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always loved country living—it’s where my roots run deep and my inspiration finds its voice. Years ago, a small caravan of covered wagons—drawn by horses and accompanied by riders—would make their annual journey past our little ranch, traveling from a nearby township. It was a sight I looked forward to every year. Our own horses would gallop to the fence line, ears pricked and eyes wide, as if recognizing kindred spirits on the move. Our dogs would bark with excitement, alerting us to the passing parade. That humble “wagon train” sparked something in me—a quiet reverence for the American Old West and the brave pioneers who journeyed through it. Though the caravan no longer makes its trek, the memory still lingers—and it was the inspiration behind this painting.

When I think of the American Old West, it’s the covered wagons and courageous pioneer families that come to mind first. There’s something timeless and moving about the grit it took to pack up everything, climb into a wagon, and venture across the vast prairie to seek a new life out West. That sense of adventure and determination is etched into our history—and into this painting. To me, the covered wagon is more than just a relic of a bygone era. It’s an enduring icon—a symbol of the pioneering heart that helped shape a nation.

Artist Reflections

Calvary at Sunset is one of my more meaningful works — a quiet reflection on one of the most pivotal moments in human history. Rather than depicting the crucifixion scene itself, I chose to portray what came just after: that sacred, somber pause when His disciples gently took Christ’s lifeless body down from the cross. The sky, still ablaze with color, seems to echo the sorrow and awe of that hour.

Inspired by the Biblical account, this painting captures the reverent beauty of evening light and its ability to stir remembrance. Scripture records that Jesus endured crucifixion beginning at 9 in the morning. His disciples removed His body from the cross just before sundown — the moment I imagined while painting this scene.

It’s not meant to be a literal interpretation, but rather a tribute to faith, sacrifice, and the hope that followed. I invite you to view it as a moment of reflection — illuminated not only by sunset hues, but by the spiritual significance they embody.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

What we Learn from the Four Gospels

The four New Testament Gospels describe a series of extraordinary events — some supernatural, others historical — that unfolded at the moment of Christ’s death:

    • Matthew mentions an earthquake, the opening of the saints’ tombs in the vicinity, and the resurrected saints making an appearance in Jerusalem.
    • Mark reveals that darkness spread throughout the land, and the temple veil was ripped in two.
    • Luke tells us Jesus was crucified with criminals and that the Roman soldiers mocked Him and cast lots for His clothing.
    • John describes the soldiers twisting a crown of thorns together and putting it on Jesus’ head; and that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, which means the place of the Skull.

Artist Reflections

A large white dog stands at the heart of this painting—possibly a Great Pyrenees, though I didn’t set out to depict a specific breed. Still, I can’t help but think of Lobo, our Pyrenees mix, who wandered up to our door one day and decided to stay. Living out in the country, we often find strays at our doorstep—dogs looking for shelter, food, or maybe just a little kindness. We never know where they come from, but we always try to help. Sometimes we’re able to reunite them with their owners. Other times, they become part of our family.

The dog in this painting isn’t Lobo, but something in its posture, its coat, its quiet presence reminds me of him. That kind of memory tends to find its way into the brushwork, whether I plan for it or not.

About This Painting

As darkness gathers, the Moon lifts above the trees, illuminating the quiet world below in soft, silvery hues.

The luminous full Moon hovers just above a silhouetted tree line, casting a soft glow across the star-speckled night sky. The Moon’s surface is rendered with subtle tonal variations, giving it depth and realism against the velvety backdrop. Stars twinkle faintly, scattered across the canvas in delicate points of light. The trees below are painted in crisp silhouette, their jagged outlines forming a quiet horizon. Rich blues and muted blacks dominate the palette, creating a serene and contemplative mood. Signed by the artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner, the signature ensures originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, the artwork measures 20 inches wide by 16 inches high and 1.5 inches deep. The painting’s composition wraps around the canvas edges, allowing for frameless display while remaining compatible with custom framing. It arrives unframed—perfect for tailoring to your personal taste and décor. A Certificate of Authenticity is included, hand-signed by Teresa Bernard and embossed with her personal seal. Artist Reflections

The inspiration for ‘Full Moon Rising’ comes straight from my own backyard in east Texas. One of my favorite rituals is taking a quiet walk in the late evening, just before turning in for the night. On clear nights, the stars scatter across the sky like glitter, and the Moon — especially when it’s full — glows so brightly it transforms the landscape. There’s something magical about seeing the countryside bathed in moonlight. It’s one of the many gifts of country living: the stillness, the clarity, and the chance to witness nature’s quiet drama.

Artist Reflections

We Texans are a proud bunch—we wear our heritage with heart, and one way we express that pride is by painting our flag right onto the barns and outbuildings that dot the countryside. Travel through the Lone Star State, and you’ll find the Texas flag gracing rooftops and facades like bold brushstrokes of identity across the land. It’s a sight as familiar as bluebonnets in spring and sunsets that stretch for miles.

The barn in this painting is one of those iconic landmarks, nestled alongside US Highway 377 just east of Stephenville. Its weathered timbers and boldly painted flag make it a favorite among locals and travelers alike. A rural tribute to Texas grit and spirit that I couldn’t resist capturing in oil.

About the Texas Flag

Flag of TexasTexans affectionately call their state flag the “Lone Star Flag.” The state adopted it in 1845, when Texas joined the Union as the 28th state. Its iconic design features a vertical blue field beside two horizontal stripes—white above red—with a single white star centered in the blue. This lone star represents unity across Texas and reflects our shared devotion to God, state, and country.

Each color carries its own meaning:

    • Blue stands for loyalty
    • White represents purity
    • Red signifies bravery

The Texas flag is bold in its simplicity and rich in symbolism. It’s a proud emblem painted not only on buildings, but in the hearts of Texans everywhere.
