A painted composition of a dad and his son fishing on the riverbank; this is a commission painting.

A young lad and his dad are fishing off the banks of Georgia’s Chattahoochee River in this painting. The sky above is cloudy, and trees line the far bank of the river.

“Fishing with Dad” is a hand-painted piece on gallery-wrapped stretched canvas, signed by the commissioned artist, Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

A gentleman from Georgia contacted me about creating a painting for him. He emailed a photo of what he wanted. The photo was of himself and his son fishing, however, it was tightly cropped, showing very little of their surroundings. He told me they were fishing along the shores of the Chattahoochee River at Jones Bridge Park in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. So, I did some research on the river and was able to incorporate it into his painting.

Upon completing the painting, I was uncertain about a suitable title, so I turned to social media for some ideas. I received numerous good suggestions, none of which I used; however, they did help me come up with what I believe is a suitable name for the subject matter. That’s how the title “Fishing with Dad” came to be for this commission painting.

Painting Description

In the stillness of the cosmos, a lone traveler blazes across the void—brief, dazzling, and untethered.

A brilliant comet streaks across the cosmos, its luminous tail glows brightly against a backdrop of countless sparkling stars. It arcs past a distant planet, partially shrouded in swirling clouds and atmospheric haze, creating a dramatic contrast between celestial motion and planetary stillness. The comet’s icy body gleams with subtle highlights, while the surrounding space is velvety black, evoking the cold and vast emptiness of the cosmos. The planet’s surface is barely visible beneath its thick cloud cover, adding mystery and depth to the composition. Reflections from the Artist

I’ve always been captivated by the night sky—its quiet grandeur, its mystery, and the rare moments when something extraordinary streaks across it. Comets, to me, are among the most dazzling performers in the heavens. They arrive unannounced, trailing luminous veils of dust and gas, and for a brief time, they transform the sky into a stage of motion and light.

The year I painted ‘Path of the Comet,’ one such traveler was making its way past Earth. I don’t recall if it was C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) or C/2022 E3 (ZTF)—commonly known as the Green Comet—but this piece isn’t a portrait of any specific one. It’s a reflection of the awe I felt knowing that, somewhere above, a celestial traveler was blazing its path through space. That sense of wonder is what I hoped to capture on canvas.

Some Interesting Facts about Caterpillars

Are caterpillars insects?
Yes. Caterpillars, like their parent butterflies or moths, are insects. The caterpillar’s only job is to eat. It can grow and expand its size more than 1,000 times while eating before metamorphosing into a moth or butterfly.

Caterpillars have twelve eyes.
A caterpillar has twelve tiny eyes called stemmata; six on each side of its head. One would think that a creature with so many eyes would have excellent vision, but not in this case. Their tiny eyes only aid in distinguishing between light and dark.

Caterpillars have a huge number of muscles in their bodies.
The muscles in a caterpillar far outnumber those in humans. A caterpillar has 4,000 muscles, while humans have 650. They rely on these muscles to move because they do not have any bones inside them.

Reflections from the Artist

‘Poppy Pods’ is a painting that came from my appreciation for the beauty in natural design. The seed pods of the opium poppy caught my eye. They were not in full bloom, but after, when the vibrancy fades and what’s left behind becomes sculptural, almost ornamental. Their rounded forms, ridged caps, and muted palette spoke to me in a way that was gentle but persistent. I wanted to honor their quiet beauty, to frame them in a way that invites viewers to pause and appreciate what often goes unnoticed.

There’s something soothing about their shape—simple yet elegant—and I felt compelled to explore that with a brush and canvas. It’s part of my ongoing journey to celebrate the small and the subtle, the fragments of the natural world that don’t clamor for attention but still deserve it.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

Your Feedback

A good painting for people to show in a room where they relax, the colors are all easy on the eyes.” — @JosephChristian33, Gab

Artist Comments

I’m a sucker for old country barns. They have a certain charm that appeals to me, especially when they’re old and weathered.  And when the composition allows, I love to include them in my landscape paintings.

The Broadside of a Barn is a country landscape painting. To create an interesting effect, I painted this composition with a tight crop. The crop gives the impression that the painting is cut in half diagonally from corner to corner, creating two contrasting triangles. The upper triangle features organic shapes, whereas the lower triangle consists of geometric, manmade forms.

This painting appeals to me because of the many contrasts present within its composition. For example, near vs. far, organic vs. manufactured, curved vs. straight, round vs. square, dark vs. light, etc. Can you find other contrasts?

Artist Comments

The composition of this seaside painting consists of a sandy beach, gentle ocean waves, and a seagull in the foreground. The aquatic color scheme has both a soothing and calming effect on its viewer.

This oil painting measures 6″x6″. Its small size makes it perfect for tight places with limited space. (See “Small Paintings for Small Spaces” for more info.)

I created it using a gallery-wrap canvas, which enabled me to extend the painting to the canvas’s sides or edges. What this means is the canvas is stretched over the support bars and fastened at the back instead of the sides. This method gives the artwork a modern look, making it suitable for wall display without the need for a frame. Nowadays, I primarily utilize this canvas style for my paintings.

A painting of a starry night with a silhouette of a man holding a balloon drifting away into the infinite beauty of the night sky and outer space. Hand-painted on gallery wrap stretched canvas and signed by fine artist Teresa Bernard. This painting is ready for display as is, or if you like, it can be framed to give it more of a finished look.

Artist Comments

The Beautiful Infinite is a commissioned painting that I did for the band members of MindSlicer, an alternative music group. They contacted me because they liked my artistic style and especially my space art paintings. The band wanted to know if I would be willing to create a painting for them to use as the cover for their upcoming album.

My Assignment

Compose a painting that emphasizes the infinity of space with thousands of visible stars and galaxies. It needed to be colorful and vibrant to balance the colder night sky with equal parts of warmth.

In addition, the composition needed to include the silhouette of a person standing on the bank of a river or the edge of a precipice. This person holds a balloon and is partially floating up into the air as if the balloon were trying to carry him off into the starry night sky.

Teresa does commission paintings. If you have a special painting in mind and you want to make it a reality just like the band members of Mindslicer did, contact us. See “How to Commission a Painting” for more information.

Starship Enterprise…To Boldly Go is Star Trek fan art. Star Trek (the original series) was my favorite TV show when I was a kid, and it still is! This painting isn’t the first time I’ve created fan art of the USS Enterprise. When I was a young teen, I painted this famous starship and entered it in a local art show. My painting drew a lot of attention back then, and I remember there were many conversations over it. Unfortunately, it’s been so long ago that I can’t remember if it was a juried art show or not. However, I do remember the painting sold, and that was very exciting for a teenager just starting out as an artist of oil paintings.

The title for this Star Trek fan art came from the show’s opening monologue.

To seek out new life and new civilizations;
To boldly go where no man has gone before!

A painting featuring the silhouette of a lone scraggly tree against the Milky Way and starry night background. In the distance is a line of trees on the horizon which are also in silhouette against a bright yellow and orange sunset. The painting is signed by oil painting artist Teresa Bernard.

This 6×6 inch painting is hand-painted on gallery wrap stretched canvas. Its small size makes it perfect for small spaces or areas where space is limited. Because the composition stretches around the sides of the canvas, it does not need to be framed before being displayed. However, if you prefer to have it framed, Starry Night will look great in your home, office, or anywhere it is displayed.

Artist Comments

I painted Starry Night with Lone Scraggly Tree because I wanted to do a night sky painting with the Milky Way. I have done a number of space paintings, but only a few of them depict space closer to home, Earth. There is so much out in the vastness of space to paint, galaxies, nebulas, suns, planets, gasses, stars, etc. I don’t think I’ll ever run out of subject matter to paint in the night sky or outer space.

Starry Night… reminds me of Psalm 19:1 which tells us “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

As I view Starry Night…, a Christian worship song I often hear on the radio comes to mind. You can listen to it here “God of Wonders Beyond Our Galaxy” by Chris Tomlin.
