Reflections from the Artist
Hot air balloons have always fascinated me. There’s something magical about watching those majestic vessels rise into the sky, drifting effortlessly above the earth. As they ascend, the landscape below transforms into a patchwork of colors and contours — a quiet reminder of how beautiful the world can be when seen from a new perspective.
One summer, my family and I attended the ‘Great Texas Balloon Race’ in Longview, Texas. It’s the longest-running hot air balloon event in the state, drawing professional pilots from around the world to compete in a vibrant three-day festival. According to the event’s website, it all began in 1978 as a creative way to promote the opening of Longview’s new mall. What started as a simple advertising idea has since “ballooned” into a beloved annual tradition.
Being there in person was unforgettable. I stood close as the balloons inflated, their colors coming to life against the morning sky. Then, one by one, they lifted off — graceful, bold, and full of wonder. That moment stayed with me, and it became the inspiration for Up, Up, and Away! This painting is my tribute to the joy, freedom, and quiet thrill of watching those gentle giants take flight.

Your Feedback
“Very fun subject. While looking at this painting, I was thinking of the awe that little children of 4 or 5 years must experience. Since little children enjoy the handheld colorful balloons a lot, I would like to see their expressions with a sky full of these very colorful giants.” — @JosephChristian33, Gab

Texans affectionately call their state flag the “Lone Star Flag.” The state adopted it in 1845, when Texas joined the Union as the 28th state. Its iconic design features a vertical blue field beside two horizontal stripes—white above red—with a single white star centered in the blue. This lone star represents unity across Texas and reflects our shared devotion to God, state, and country.
