About This Painting

She’s headed for the ocean, her board tucked under arm, the surf is calling…

“Gone Surfing” is an oil painting that depicts a teenage surfer girl with light-brown hair walking barefoot through sunlit sand toward the sea. She wears a blue and white letter jacket, softened by salt-kissed breezes and afternoon light. Under her left arm, she carries a white surfboard striped with bold orange bands, its curve echoing the distant waves ahead. Beach foliage borders the worn trail she follows, framing her quiet journey. Her back is turned to the viewer, inviting us to share her anticipation as ocean swells rise gently in the background. Overhead, the sky is a vast blue brushed with drifting clouds. Artist Teresa Bernard’s signature appears in the lower left corner, affirming originality and authenticity.

Measuring 12″ wide by 16″ tall, the painting is rendered in oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. This format allows the composition to extend around the edges, offering the option to display it unframed for a modern look or frame it for a traditional presentation. It arrives unframed, giving you the flexibility to personalize its display to suit your taste and space. Artist Reflections

“Gone Surfing” is a simple yet evocative phrase that captures the essence of slipping away to the sea. It brings to mind sun-kissed beaches, the scent of saltwater spray, and the thrill of skimming across the ocean’s surface on a surfboard. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or someone who just dreams about it, those two little words evoke freedom, adventure, and the joy of riding the waves.

When I was a child growing up in Texas, the coast felt worlds away. My family didn’t live anywhere near the beach. But I’d watch reruns of movies and TV shows starring Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and all those teen surf icons. Their world fascinated me — carefree, sandy, and filled with sunshine. I often imagined what it might feel like to paddle out, catch a wave, and ride it in like they did.

Had my childhood taken place nearer the shore, maybe I’d have been that teenage girl in the painting — barefoot in the sand, surfboard tucked under arm, heading toward the swell. I never learned to surf, but the longing stuck with me. This painting is a glimpse into that dream — a quiet “what if” preserved in brushstrokes.

Artist Reflections

Composing this tractor tire painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. I like to give myself challenges now and then. With this one, I set out to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I believe I achieved that goal.

What I like best about this painting are the various textures present in the composition — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusted metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many interesting things going on in this painting; it was a lot of fun to paint!

A tractor tire isn’t something most people imagine as the subject of a painting, yet here it is—center stage and full of personality. I can picture it hanging in a man cave, an office, or anywhere someone loves tractors, cars, or just the gritty charm of rural life.

Artist Reflections

I’ve always been a huge fan of the United States Space Program—both its civilian pursuits and military achievements. This painting is my personal tribute to the brave souls who make space exploration possible, from the pioneers who dare to dream big, to the engineers who turn dreams into reality, to the astronauts who carry our dreams beyond Earth. Their work inspires me deeply.

As someone who loves discovering new places, the idea of journeying into outer space feels like the ultimate adventure. Painting this work allowed me to celebrate that spirit of exploration and reflect on our innate desire to reach beyond the horizon.

About the U.S. Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttle is a retired spacecraft system operated by NASA from 1981 to 2011 as part of the United States Space Shuttle program. It was intended to be a partially reusable spacecraft that would be launched like a rocket and landed on a runway like a glider. The space shuttle launched astronauts and cargo into space and returned them safely.

The United States Space Program has constructed six space shuttles since it began. The initial shuttle, Enterprise, served as a prototype and was transported on its inaugural journey by a Boeing 747, although it never reached space. The remaining shuttles, Challenger, Columbia, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour, all completed space missions.

Each shuttle carries a legacy of courage and ingenuity—a testament to the American spirit of reaching higher and daring greatly. Though now retired and resting in museums, they continue to spark the imagination, reminding us that the adventure isn’t over—only waiting for its next chapter. Their story mirrors the heart behind my painting: bold dreams, quiet determination, and a shared belief that we can rise above the ordinary and reach for something greater.

Artist Reflections

Monument Valley, known to the Navajo as Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii — the “Valley of the Rocks” — is one of those rare places that feels otherworldly the moment you arrive. Nestled in southeastern Utah near the Arizona border, its red mesas, sandstone buttes, and dramatic spires rise from the desert like ancient sentinels. It’s no wonder this breathtaking landscape has appeared in countless Western films and photographs over the years — it truly embodies the spirit of the American Old West.

I remember the first time I stood before those towering formations. The scale and silence were overwhelming in the best possible way — like stepping onto another planet carved by wind, time, and sun. I knew almost immediately I’d be painting it. In fact, Monument Valley has found its way onto my canvas more than once, and each rendition feels like a personal tribute to the land’s quiet majesty.

My earliest memories of painting this location go all the way back to my younger days, learning oil painting under the guidance of my father. Dad was a gifted artist who loved Monument Valley as much as I do. He completed several stunning works inspired by the same red rocks and desert light, many of which were acquired by collectors and small businesses in our hometown. Though their whereabouts are unknown now, those paintings — and the shared passion behind them — continue to inspire my work today.

Artist Reflections

Back in 2015, my husband Robert and I set off for Amarillo, Texas, not knowing our vacation would be deeply shaped by the quiet splendor of Palo Duro Canyon. We visited the state park multiple times during that trip—it quickly became our favorite stop. There was something about the vastness of it all, the layered cliffs glowing with late-day sun, and the stillness that settles over you when you’re surrounded by the stillness of the Texas Panhandle.

The Lighthouse rock formation was especially memorable. It’s one of the canyon’s most iconic landmarks and definitely a highlight for anyone visiting the park. On our hikes, it felt almost like a sentinel, emerging from the rugged ground and scrubby brush, watching silently over the canyon’s expanse. I came away with countless reference photos and a renewed sense of artistic inspiration—not just for this painting, but for several others that would follow.

Palo Duro Canyon is affectionately called “The Grand Canyon of Texas,” and with good reason. It stretches 120 miles and dives as deep as 800 feet in places, rich with color and texture. But what stays with me most isn’t the stats—it’s the feeling. And it’s that feeling I hoped to capture on canvas: the quiet strength of stone, the warmth of sunlit cliffs, and the spirit of a place etched into the land and the memory.

Artist Reflections

Swimming with sharks? Not exactly my idea of a relaxing afternoon—but that’s the kind of moment I wanted to capture. This painting puts you just beneath a formation of hammerhead sharks, close enough to feel their presence and know you’re not in charge down there. There’s a mix of awe and unease—majestic creatures drifting overhead, and you’re exposed in their world. Everything is bathed in that unmistakable aquamarine hue that comes from the ocean water all around, and I leaned into that with a monochromatic palette to reflect that natural filter and keep the focus on mood and movement.

—Teresa Bernard, oil painter

What is a Monochromatic Painting?

A monochromatic painting uses just one color—exploring its shades, tints, and tones to create depth and detail. Without the distraction of multiple hues, this approach highlights how light and value shape the subject. Even small shifts in saturation or intensity can add contrast, movement, and mood. It’s a simple technique, but when done well, it reveals surprising complexity and visual richness.
