Artist Reflections

Ballet has long been a form of artistic expression I deeply admire. There’s something truly captivating about watching dancers perform live—the music, the sets, the ambiance, and above all, the grace with which they move across the stage to tell a story. When I attend a ballet, I’m always struck by the combination of elegance and strength. It’s an art form that lives and breathes in motion.

Of course, ballet isn’t for the faint of heart. Aspiring professionals often begin their training as early as age two, and joining a reputable dance company takes years of rigorous practice and precise technique. The discipline is intense, and the toll on a dancer’s body can be severe—injuries are unfortunately common in the pursuit of such physical and artistic perfection.

I was in my late teens when I attended my first ballet performance. My best friend Cyndie and her family had tickets to see the Nutcracker Suite at a local theater. I can’t remember why, but she couldn’t go, so Cyndie gave me her ticket. She felt that out of all her friends, I would appreciate the ballet the most—and she was right! That night planted something special inside me. I’ll always be grateful to Cyndie for opening the door to a world that continues to inspire me, both as a viewer and as an artist.

Artist Reflections

I never had the chance to take ballet myself as a child, but for a time, my daughter did.  And she was simply precious in her tiny tutu and sparkling tiara. I’ll never forget sitting in the audience, feeling like the proudest momma in the room, as she danced across the stage with her ballet company. Her little feet worked so hard to follow the steps, and to me, every movement was a masterpiece of joy and determination.

While this painting doesn’t depict her feet specifically, it’s a tribute to the beauty and discipline found in any young girl who embraces the art of classical ballet. It celebrates the strength tucked into stillness, the elegance in every pose, and the quiet devotion behind those hours at the barre.
