Artist Reflections

There’s a quiet kind of drama in ordinary objects—especially when light and color come into play. These onions, with their rich tones and layered textures, caught my eye and held it. I wanted to explore something a little different with this piece—less about arrangement and more about presence. There’s a kind of elegance in the way they rest together, casually piled yet full of character.

Painting the onions felt like a study in contrast: bold reds and golds against a moody backdrop, soft curves meeting crisp highlights. It’s a celebration of form and color, but also of the simple, familiar ingredients that nourish us daily. I imagine this piece bringing warmth and sophistication to any space where food and conversation are shared.

About This Painting

Timeworn wooden spools wound with colorful thread speak to the quiet beauty of everyday things once made to last.

Four vintage wooden spools are grouped closely together, each wound with sewing thread in a different color—red, orange, green, and blue. A slim sewing needle pierces the green spool at a slight angle, introducing a vertical line that contrasts with the horizontal layout. The background is a subtle gray, allowing the spotlight to remain solely on the spools. Each spool carries evidence of age—gentle wear, chipped edges, and a faded finish that speaks to years of use. Signed in the lower left corner by artist Teresa Bernard, the signature ensures originality and authorship.

Painted in oil on a 6″ × 6″ × .5″ gallery-wrapped canvas. Its compact size makes it ideal for small wall spaces or intimate display areas. The artwork features finished edges for a clean, contemporary look—framing is optional. It arrives unframed, allowing you to style its display to fit your personal taste and room décor. A personalized Certificate of Authenticity, hand-signed by Teresa and embossed with her exclusive seal, affirms the artwork’s genuineness, provenance, and enduring value.

Artist Reflections

‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #2’ is part of my Family Heirlooms Series, inspired by the everyday objects that once filled our homes with quiet purpose. I chose this title because thread is no longer sold on wooden spools—a change that marks the shift from past to present. Our great-grandmothers likely used thread spun on wood, but today it’s sold on plastic instead.

Although manufacturers no longer make wooden thread spools, that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their usefulness. Their sturdy design and simple charm make them ideal for repurposing, long after the thread is gone.

As a child, I found endless ways to play with empty wooden spools. I strung them together and used them to make necklaces. When I played with my Barbie dolls, I would use them for doll furniture, among other things.

Vintage wooden spools also lend themselves to a wide range of arts and crafts projects. With a little imagination, they can be transformed into decorative pieces or repurposed in creative ways that give them new life. Use them on your own, or incorporate them into a project your children can enjoy. Better yet, make it a shared activity—something you and your children can create together.

Artist Reflections

‘Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #1’ is part of my Family Heirlooms Series. It was created to honor a quiet shift in domestic history—back when thread came on wooden spools instead of plastic. Our great-grandmothers likely used these vintage sewing notions in their needlework, and today, they’ve become charming relics of a bygone era.

Wooden spools of thread, once common in sewing boxes, are now over 50 years old and considered collectible antiques. By the time our mothers and grandmothers were sewing, plastic had taken over—more practical for manufacturers, but far less sentimental. I still remember playing with empty wooden spools as a child in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, when my grandmother taught me to sew doll clothes, I’d rummage through her sewing box, searching for just the right color of thread. Every now and then, I’d find a wooden spool tucked among the newer plastic ones—a small treasure from the past.

Wooden sewing spools quietly disappeared in the 1970s, phased out in favor of manufacturing efficiency. But they carry a kind of emotional weight, don’t they? If you happen to come across one, don’t toss it aside. These little pieces of history still hold value—not just monetary, but sentimental. Their worth lies in the stories they hold.

Artist Reflections

There’s something timeless and comforting about the fall season. Its rich colors, earthy textures, and that quiet hush in the air just before winter always speak to me. I wanted to capture that feeling in Fall Pumpkins and a Wagon Wheel. A weathered wheel rests beneath a tree, with three pumpkins nestled nearby. The scene reminds me of peaceful countryside moments that often slip into memory. Behind them, the woods glow with vibrant autumn hues. It feels like nature’s last burst of brilliance before the leaves fall. If you love the fall season as much as I do, I think this little scene will speak to you. It’s one of my personal favorites.
