About This Painting

Suspended in silence above Earth’s orbit, a spacewalker drifts—bathed in soft light, surrounded by infinite dark.

A space-themed painting depicts an American astronaut drifting weightlessly above the curvature of Earth. His spacesuit gleams with soft highlights and subtle shadowed folds, rendered with quiet precision. The spacewalker floats in space, attached to unseen lifelines securing him to the spacecraft he has emerged from. Reflected in the helmet visor, the Moon hovers silently in the distance. Behind his left shoulder, Earth glows with depth and clarity, its continents—North and South America—discernible beneath delicate layers of swirling cloud. A sea of stars unfurls across the backdrop like scattered jewels in a velvet sky. Signed by artist Teresa Bernard in the lower right-hand corner, her mark ensures originality and authorship.

Artist Reflections

Space has long beckoned humanity to look beyond the edge of the known world. It’s where science meets wonder, and where curiosity becomes ambition. The exploration of space isn’t just a physical journey—it’s a mirror held up to our need for perspective, meaning, and connection to something larger than ourselves.

With “Spacewalker,” I wanted to capture that sense of exploration through the solitary figure of an astronaut suspended over Earth. Set against the vastness of space, the astronaut becomes a symbol of human curiosity and our determination to venture beyond the familiar. For me, this painting celebrates the adventurous spirit that continues to carry humanity farther into the cosmos.

Artist Reflections

Hot air balloons have always fascinated me. There’s something magical about watching those majestic vessels rise into the sky, drifting effortlessly above the earth. Their brilliant colors and graceful shapes against an open sky also make them especially appealing subjects to paint. As they ascend, the landscape below transforms into a patchwork of colors and contours—a quiet reminder of how beautiful the world can be when seen from a new perspective.

One summer, my family and I attended the Great Texas Balloon Race in Longview, Texas. Seeing so many colorful balloons gathered in one place gave me an opportunity to experience their beauty up close rather than simply admiring them from afar.

Being there in person was unforgettable. I stood close as the balloons inflated, their colors coming to life against the morning sky. Then, one by one, they lifted off—graceful, bold, and full of wonder. That moment stayed with me and became the inspiration for ‘Up, Up, and Away!’ In this skyscape painting, I wanted to capture the joy, freedom, and quiet thrill of watching those gentle giants take flight.

Comments from Art Lovers

“Very fun subject. While looking at this painting, I was thinking of the awe that little children of 4 or 5 years must experience. Since little children enjoy the handheld colorful balloons a lot, I would like to see their expressions with a sky full of these very colorful giants.” — @JosephChristian33, Gab
