Artist Reflections
I titled this painting ‘Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup’ because fine china brings to mind an earlier generation, when beautiful cups and saucers were brought out for special occasions and shared with family and friends. In this teacup still life, I wanted to capture some of that quiet elegance and sense of tradition.
The fine china teacup and saucer became the focal point of the composition, with their burgundy and gold details standing out against the darker background. The silk flower adds another touch of color and softness, while the reflected light brings attention to the smooth porcelain and delicate contours of the cup.
For me, this fine china still life is about more than painting an attractive object. It is an original oil painting inspired by the everyday possessions that can connect us with earlier generations and the memories and traditions associated with them.
—Teresa Bernard, oil painter
