A Graphic Designer Turned Fine Artist

Trading Ctrl+Z for the Art That Chose Me

graphic designer turned fine artist

My journey from graphic design to fine art hasn’t been a straight line, but it’s brought me to a place where the brush feels more like home than the keyboard ever did.

From Pixels to Oil Paint

While painting was my earliest creative language—taught and nurtured by my father, a professional fine artist—graphic design became my first professional voice. I spent years shaping visual stories through type, layout, and code. I loved the precision, the instant feedback, and the way a single keystroke could open new possibilities. Mistakes? Easily undone with a quick press of the delete key. It was a world of layers, grids, and ideas that could be endlessly revised, resized, or reshaped.

But over time, something shifted.

The screen began to feel a little too perfect—too reversible. I started craving something more tactile, more vulnerable. That’s when I picked up my paintbrush again and never looked back.

Oil painting, unlike design, doesn’t offer an “undo” button. A misplaced brushstroke means waiting for it to dry, or painting over it entirely. Sometimes, the mistake guides the piece in a new direction. It’s less controlled, more intuitive—and strangely, more human.

Echoes of Graphic Design in the Art Studio

And yet, my background as a graphic designer still whispers through my oil paintings. I find myself drawn to composition, balance, negative space. Years of arranging pixels taught me how to guide the eye—but now, I compose with pigment, light, and shadow instead. The canvas may be physical, but the design principles still apply—they just breathe differently.

In many ways, graphic design was easier. But painting is truer. It’s slower, yes—but also deeper. And while I can’t hit “undo,” I’ve found something richer in letting the process lead me, mistake and all.

I may be retired from the digital design world, but I’ve never stopped creating. This is just a new chapter—messier, more textured, and infinitely more rewarding.

Artist Statement by Teresa Bernard

Artist StatementMy Artist Statement

The appreciation I have for quality fine art and my artistic ability are gifts from the one true God. It’s because of Him that I’m able to share my gifts with the rest of the world.

I’m told every professional artist needs an artist statement; this is mine.

Fine art has been my passion since I was young. I love working on my paintings, and I am often inspired by life and nature. While I love many different art styles, realism is my favorite. As a realist artist, my approach to a subject is to portray it as it appears in life, just as God created it. However, I do admire other art styles, such as impressionism and abstract art. For example, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso are among my favorite artists whose artistic styles are very different from my own. Other painters I admire include American artists Georgia O’Keeffe for her flower paintings and Thomas Kinkaid for his realism in art.

I love the challenge of painting a variety of subjects (landscapes, flowers, still life, etc.), whatever inspires me at the moment. However, I think my favorite would have to be landscapes or space art since I do more of these than any other genre.

Oil paint is the medium I use to create my art on canvas. Painting in oils is a traditional form of art that many of the Old Masters used when they made their masterpieces. I love the work of the Old Masters, and someday I hope to be as accomplished as they were.

I love sharing my paintings with others, so I’ve created this website to showcase a selection of my most recent oil paintings. As I finish more paintings, I will add them to my site. So, take a look around, and if you find something you like, feel free to post your comments or drop me an email. Check back from time to time to see what’s new. Thank you for visiting my online art studio. It’s been a pleasure to share my artwork with you.

Blessings,
Teresa Bernard

Getting To Know the Artist

More About Artist Teresa Bernard

more about artist Teresa Bernard
Royce G. Phillips

Teresa (Phillips) Bernard is a native Texan, born and raised in west Texas. She began painting at an early age under the instruction of her father, Royce G. Phillips, a professional artist. Her dad, now deceased, painted oil paintings and taught art classes in their hometown and the surrounding rural communities of Ballinger, Bronte, Edith, Robert Lee, and Winters, Texas. He taught Teresa the love of art by teaching her how to paint. In addition, he taught her the fundamentals of art, composition, and how to work in a variety of mediums, specifically oil paint, pencil sketches, and charcoal drawings.

There aren’t many artists who come from a succession of artists in their family, and Teresa is among those with this particular distinction. After graduating high school, Teresa headed off to California, where she continued her studies in the fine arts and also learn graphic design, which guided her career as a commercial artist. (Read more about her professional art career here.)

Teresa loves many art styles, but realism is her favorite. She enjoys painting landscapes, still life, florals, space art, wildlife, and commission work. Teresa doesn’t specialize in one particular genre because she loves the challenge of painting whatever inspires her at the time. Throughout the years, she has made a name for herself as an accomplished painter. Her paintings have won various awards in juried art shows and, thanks to the Internet, have sold all across the United States and around the world.

In her life, Teresa has lived in many places, and each location has influenced her art. For example, while living on the west coast, Teresa painted many coastal scenes and marine life. On the east coast, she loved painting lighthouses. Now that she is back in her home state, she paints life as it is there. See her Life in Texas series.

Teresa Bernard, a Career Artist

Teresa’s professional career spans over three decades working as a graphic artist and web designer. And now that she has retired from the workforce, she devotes most of her time to painting and promoting her artwork. She lives with her husband Robert, a retired US Navy Chief, on their horse ranch in a small east Texas community near Tyler.

Artist Biography of Teresa Bernard

The art career and biography of fine artist Teresa Bernard, a realism painter of oil paintings.

A Lifetime in Art

Oil Painting Artist Teresa Bernard
Fine Artist Teresa Bernard

Texas-born artist Teresa Bernard began painting in her pre-teens under the instruction of her father, Royce G. Phillips. Her dad, a professional artist himself, introduced Teresa to the world of fine art and oil painting. (Read more about her early art background here.)

Royce Phillips was an oil painter who also taught art classes in their hometown and the nearby surrounding communities. He instilled in Teresa the love of fine art by teaching her how to draw and paint. Sadly, her father passed away in 1976 during her senior year of high school. She left home after graduation to attend college in order to further her studies in the fine arts and prepare for her career in art.

Formal Art Education

After graduating high school, Teresa attended college in Pasadena, California, where she continued her studies in the fine arts. There she studied art history and the “Old Masters,” color theory, acrylic painting, oil painting, drawing in several mediums, 2-D and 3-D design, perspective, and art composition. While attending college there, Teresa also studied commercial art, graphic design, production art, typography, photography, and other design-related subjects in addition to her fine art classes. This was when Teresa decided to pursue a career in graphic art, creating artwork for print media.

Years later, Teresa acquired web design skills by taking some online college courses in HTML, JavaScript, and DHTML. Since then, ongoing independent studies have allowed her to gain skills in working with ASP, cascading style sheets, shopping carts, WordPress, the Internet, and social media marketing, as well as search engine optimization.

She exhibits her paintings online, at art shows and fairs, and sells them wherever she can. Teresa has made a name for herself as a fine artist, and, thanks to the Internet, she has sold her paintings worldwide. Her dream is to eventually retire from commercial art and make her true passion, oil painting, her career.

UPDATE:  Teresa is now retired from commercial art and lives on a small horse ranch in East Texas with her husband, Robert. Although she may be retired from the workforce, she has not retired from her art. Teresa devotes a lot of her time to her oil paintings and paints almost every day. She shares her newly completed paintings on her website and social media.
