About This Painting

Bathed in coastal light, the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse stands like a sentinel over Denmark’s North Sea. Its silent strength captured in soft brushstrokes and earthy hues.

Rising from sun-drenched sand dunes, a tall lighthouse commands the canvas with its striking rectangular form and squared edges. The muted beige façade blends with the surrounding landscape, while the lantern room — rendered in a rich, crimson red — creates a vivid accent against the clear blue sky. Behind the tower, the calm sea stretches across the horizon in tranquil blues, anchoring the composition with quiet serenity. The painting is signed by artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner — a mark that certifies originality and authenticity.

Hand-painted in 2022 using oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, the artwork measures 6″ wide by 8″ high and 1.5″ deep. Its edges are fully painted, creating a seamless composition that can be displayed beautifully with or without a frame. Artist Reflections

Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse immediately struck me as a compelling subject to paint. Its solitary presence among the windswept dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast creates a dramatic contrast between a man-made structure and the vast natural landscape surrounding it.

What interested me most as an artist was that sense of isolation and resilience. In this lighthouse oil painting, I wanted the tower to stand as the unmistakable focal point while still allowing the open coastal landscape to play an important role in the composition. The dunes, distant sea, and expansive sky give the lighthouse a sense of place while emphasizing how small it appears against the forces of nature.

Through this Danish coastal painting, I wanted to capture more than the appearance of a historic lighthouse. I wanted to convey the atmosphere of the North Sea coast and the enduring presence of Rubjerg Knude within its changing landscape.

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each one holds its own unique history, character, and architectural identity — and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.

On the windswept sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. But time and tide have not been kind to its surroundings. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Coastal erosion and shifting sands pose a constant threat, with the shoreline receding at a rate of nearly 5 feet per year.

After its beacon was extinguished in 1968, the lighthouse’s buildings found new life as a museum and coffee shop. However, the buildings were abandoned years later as the sands encroached. Eventually, these smaller structures were demolished, damaged beyond repair by the relentless pressure of the dunes.

At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have plunged into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. Thanks to their efforts, the lighthouse now stands secure, with hopes that it will remain upright and intact until at least 2060.

This remarkable history is part of what makes Rubjerg Knude such a compelling subject for coastal and lighthouse art.

About This Painting

This large painting depicts the African Camelthorn Trees of Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park in a surrealistic composition, but it is actually a realistic depiction.

A mesmerizing desert landscape unfolds across the canvas. At center stage, a cluster of camelthorn trees stands lifeless — their dark, skeletal forms silhouetted against a towering dune aglow with bright orange light from the rising sun. Leafless branches claw upward in haunting stillness, preserved by the region’s hyper-arid climate. The desert floor beneath them is drenched in deep blue shadow, cast by a neighboring dune just beyond the viewer’s sightline. The visual contrast is striking; bold oranges, midnight blues, and inky blacks create a composition that appears surreal, yet remains grounded in realism. Artist Teresa Bernard’s signature appears in the lower left-hand corner of the canvas.

“Camelthorn Trees of Africa” is hand-painted on 24×24-inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The image continues around the edges for a polished, modern look, allowing for display with or without a frame. It arrives unframed — perfect for tailoring to your personal style. This one-of-a-kind original includes a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity embossed with Teresa’s personal seal.

Artist Reflections

At first glance, this painting might look a bit surreal — which is unusual for me. I’m a realist painter, and I like to depict things as they truly are. But sometimes nature presents something so visually bizarre it almost feels imagined. That’s what drew me to the camelthorn trees of Namibia. These long-dead trees are preserved by the extreme aridity of the desert, and when silhouetted against a glowing dune at sunrise, they look like something out of a dream. Yet every detail is real — that’s the magic.

I was especially drawn to the bold contrasts: orange light pouring across the dune, the shadowed blue floor, and the dark, twisted tree shapes caught between. Painting it was a joy — a reminder of how truth in nature can feel surreal, and how realism sometimes reveals the unexpected.
