Painting Description
Bathed in coastal light, the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse stands like a sentinel over Denmark’s North Sea. Its silent strength captured in soft brushstrokes and earthy hues.
Rising from sun-drenched sand dunes, a tall lighthouse commands the canvas with its striking rectangular form and squared edges. The muted beige façade blends with the surrounding landscape, while the lantern room — rendered in a rich, crimson red — creates a vivid accent against the clear blue sky. Behind the tower, the calm sea stretches across the horizon in tranquil blues, anchoring the composition with quiet serenity. The painting is signed by artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner — a mark that certifies originality and authenticity.
Hand-painted in 2022 using oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, the artwork measures 6″ wide by 8″ high and 1.5″ deep. Its edges are fully painted, creating a seamless composition that can be displayed beautifully with or without a frame. The piece arrives unframed — perfect for tailoring to your personal style and space. It is an original, one-of-a-kind painting and includes a customized Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by Teresa and embossed with her personal seal.
Part of the celebrated Lighthouse Series, this painting captures the understated strength and serene mood that defines the collection. Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is a distinctive piece of maritime art that reflects Teresa’s passion, precision, and enduring style. Its quiet elegance makes it well-suited for display in living rooms, reading nooks, offices, or anywhere a touch of coastal calm is welcome.

Reflections from the Artist
I love lighthouses! There’s something timeless and quietly profound about them that speaks to me on a deep level. I’ve long been drawn to their steadfast presence — guiding sailors through storms, standing watch over the restless sea, and embodying solitude and strength all at once. During my time living on the east coast, I had the pleasure of visiting several lighthouses along the rugged shores of the Outer Banks. Each one left an impression, not just for its architecture or setting, but for the sense of history and resilience it carried.
Naturally, many of those visits inspired my work, and over the years I’ve painted a number of the lighthouses I came to know while living nearby. Yet even beyond the familiar coastlines, there’s a whole world of lighthouses I’ve yet to see—places that stir my imagination and beckon me to paint them, even from afar.
The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse in Denmark is one of those places. Though I haven’t stood beneath its tower or felt the wind off its cliffs, it intrigued me with its windswept isolation and dramatic perch on shifting dunes. In a way, it became a source of inspiration from afar — a landmark that captured my imagination and lingered in my thoughts — and that’s what led me to capture it in this painting.

More about Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse
Lighthouses have stood as iconic structures along coastlines for centuries, guiding ships safely through treacherous waters. Each one holds its own unique history, character, and architectural identity — and Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is no exception.
On the windswept sand dunes of Denmark’s North Sea coast sits a lonely watchtower known as Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse. Its beacon once stood watch, guiding ships and other watercraft through dangerous waters. But time and tide have not been kind to its surroundings. Today, however, it is in danger of falling into the sea. Coastal erosion and shifting sands pose a constant threat, with the shoreline receding at a rate of nearly 5 feet per year.
After its beacon was extinguished in 1968, the lighthouse’s buildings found new life as a museum and coffee shop — only to be abandoned years later as the sands encroached. Eventually, these smaller structures were demolished, damaged beyond repair by the relentless pressure of the dunes.
At the current rate of erosion, the tower would have plunged into the sea by 2023. However, in 2019, a preservation group set about relocating it, and the 75ft-tall, 720-ton lighthouse was moved 230 feet inland on specially built rails. Thanks to their efforts, the lighthouse now stands secure, with hopes that it will remain upright and intact until at least 2060.
