This insect art is an oil painting of the Monarch Butterfly. This painting beautifully captures the wonder of nature and is ideal for any nature enthusiast.

Artist Comments

This monarch butterfly painting is one of several compact-size paintings I’ve composed. I decided to do some smaller paintings to attract a broader range of buyers and collectors for my art pieces. So I purchased a supply of 6×6 inch stretched canvases and started composing paintings on them. I work on these small canvases alongside the larger paintings when I paint, working on both sized artworks during the same painting session.  I had no idea how much I would enjoy creating these smaller paintings until I started doing them.

Artist Comments

Sunsets in the tropics are truly something special. The combination of beautiful colors, the smell of the sea air, the feel of sand beneath your feet, and the sounds of the ocean splashing against the seashore. The rays of a setting sun have a way of making one reflect on the best things in life.

At one time or another, just about everyone has marveled at the beauty of a sunset (or sunrise) with the splendor of its red, yellow, and orange colors. It may not have been on a distant tropical island somewhere; it might have been right in your own backyard. Regardless, wherever you find yourself basking in the beauty of a sunset, it is the best place to be.

Artist Comments

I love flowers! Their quiet strength, ever-changing beauty, and the way sunlight dances across their petals always captivate me. Capturing those details up close is one of my favorite ways to paint. There’s something intimate and revealing about zooming in on a bloom—it invites us to pause and truly see what’s often overlooked.

The King Protea flower drew me in the moment I saw it. With its grand, sculptural blossom and bold foliage, it felt like royalty in bloom. It carries a certain majesty, but there’s also a softness to it, especially when bathed in warm light. That contrast—the regal presence paired with natural grace—inspired me deeply and made it a perfect subject for this painting.

A small still life painting of a fine china teacup and saucer, similar to those used by grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

A small still life painting of a fine china teacup and saucer, the kind that grandma or great grandma might have used to sip their tea or coffee. The teacup and saucer feature decorations in burgundy and gold. A burgundy silk flower is also sitting in the saucer next to the teacup. The background is dark, and the tabletop is gold. This delicate and colorful teacup painting would be ideal for adding a touch of class to a small kitchen, dining area, or living room. The painting bears the signature of the artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner.

This unique, small-scale painting is perfect for compact spaces or rooms with limited area. Measuring 6×6 inches, it was meticulously hand-painted on a gallery-wrapped stretched canvas. Artist Comments

I named this painting ‘Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup’ because, in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups, and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans. Well, at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her upcoming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be ludicrous to do so as the china set would never get used except for holidays and perhaps rarely even then.

For many Americans, I suppose there is no longer a need for the loving memories that come from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions as our great-grandmothers did; or is there? And I guess it’s been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when served in a fine china cup. Not to mention that teacups are pretty and dainty, which helps to make a special occasion that much more special.

So, what are you waiting for? Bring out your great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to use today. You’re not getting any younger.

Painting Description

A tightly cropped composition of a garden cottage in sunny hues of yellow, pink, and white makes this painting both distinctive and cheerful.

Warm sunlight and blooming petals draw the eye into this painting of The Garden Cottage, where architectural grace and garden detail come together in a serene, cheerful setting. Sunlight casts a gentle glow over the golden-yellow cottage, highlighting its classic, white-trimmed window. Pink flowers spill softly across the foreground, nestled behind a charming white picket fence. This cozy vignette evokes the tranquility of a summer morning in a peaceful countryside nook.

This oil painting is hand-rendered on gallery-wrapped canvas, allowing the image to extend around the edges for a clean, modern presentation. Measuring 6″ x 6″, the piece adds a cheerful burst of color and personality to any space—small in scale but rich in detail. The artwork is signed by artist Teresa Bernard in the lower left corner. It arrives unframed. Should you choose to frame it, the piece adapts beautifully to both rustic and contemporary settings. A signed Certificate of Authenticity is included with your purchase.

Part of Teresa Bernard’s Doors & Windows Series, this painting speaks to those moments when nature and structure coexist in quiet harmony. Whether you’re drawn to the architectural detail, the cheerful palette, or the peaceful garden scene, this original artwork offers a charming escape with every glance.

Artist Comments

I’ve always been drawn to the idea that simplicity can be deeply engaging—and ‘The Garden Cottage’ is a perfect example of that. For this piece, I intentionally cropped the scene tightly, choosing to leave out much of the surrounding environment so the viewer could focus on just a few meaningful elements: the white-trimmed window, the textured yellow siding, the soft cascade of flowers, and a cheerful picket fence. There’s something satisfying about letting those details speak for themselves without distraction.

This compositional approach isn’t new to me—it’s a technique I’ve used in several paintings where I want the viewer to feel pulled in close, almost like they’re standing within the scene. It’s a way to spotlight the everyday beauty found in architectural corners and quiet garden moments. I find that it creates a strong sense of intimacy, and in this painting, it worked just as I hoped.

Below, you’ll find other works where I’ve used this same cropped perspective to capture quiet charm from an intentionally narrowed point of view.

Artist Comments

This insect painting is the second art piece in the Ladybug Series. I named it ‘Almost Perfect Camouflage’ because the red color of the ladybug blends in so well with the flower it sits on. A natural predator would have to look very close to see it.

Where did they get their name? Are all ladybugs female? What do you call a ladybug that is a male? How can you tell them apart? All great questions!

The term “ladybug” is the common name for Coccinellidae, a Latin word that means scarlet. In America, this insect is referred to as “ladybug,” while in Europe, it is known as “lady beetle” or “ladybird beetle.” Whether you call them ladybug, ladybird, or lady beetle, the name has its origins in an old legend from Europe during the Middle Ages.

—Teresa Bernard

The Legend of the Ladybug

Legend has it that pests were destroying the Europeans’ crops, so Catholic farmers began praying to the Blessed Lady (the Virgin Mary) for help. Soon afterward, they noticed tiny black and red beetles in their fields eating the unwanted pests. The crops remained remarkably unharmed by the infestation. The farmers attributed their good fortune to the tiny insects called “the beetles of our Lady.” The red color of the beetle represents Mary’s cloak, and the black spots her sorrows. Over time, these beetles were affectionately termed ladybugs.

Ladybugs come in both male and female varieties, and both sexes are called the same thing…”ladybugs.” It is hard to distinguish male from female ladybugs with the naked eye, although females are larger than males. And that is hard to determine unless they are next to each other.

This insect art is an original oil painting of a red ladybug. The painting is a bright and happy scene that beautifully captures the wonder of nature.

A close-up oil painting of a ladybug. The red insect is hanging on tight to a leafy branch. The composition is bright, colorful, and cheerful. It would be ideal for a child’s room or for anyone who has an interest in insects. This is one of two paintings in a series and is signed in the bottom left corner by insect artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This painting is the first of two in the Ladybug Series. I actually worked on both paintings simultaneously, i.e., Ladybug #1 and Ladybug #2. I painted the ladybug series on six-inch-by-six-inch canvases. For such a small creature, I felt 6×6 was a perfect size. I love ladybugs and had been wanting to paint one (or more) for quite some time.

I came across a good deal on some small canvases, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy 24 of them. When my shipment of 6×6 canvases arrived, I thought this was the perfect time to paint the ladybugs. Before these two particular paintings, it had been quite some time since I last painted on such a small canvas. It was a lot of fun, and it didn’t take any time at all to finish it.

—Teresa Bernard

Now About the Ladybugs!

Ladybugs, sometimes called ladybeetles or ladybird beetles, are wondrous little creatures! They most commonly come in red, yellow, and orange colors, which fade as the beetle gets older. Some species have black spots while others have black stripes and still others are a solid color with no markings. Their bright colors serve to warn birds they don’t taste good.

Surprisingly there are over 6,000 different species of this particular insect. They are beneficial insects because ladybugs eat other insects like aphids that often damage crops and garden plants.

The life cycle of a ladybug consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female ladybugs may lay as many as 1,000 eggs from spring to early summer, depending on the species. It usually takes four days for their eggs to hatch.

The Texas Horned Lizard, or simply “horny toad” as we called them when I was a kid growing up in west Texas, was a fun painting to do. It brought back lots of fond childhood memories. As children, my friends and I would see these little spiked critters all the time and often would play with them for a while, and then we would release them. As an adult, I noticed they aren’t in abundance so much anymore. So, I did a little research to find out why. Here is what I discovered from my readings.

In Search of the Horny Toad

About 70% of the Texas horned lizard’s diet is made up of harvester ants. Through the years, their population has declined by about 30%. Although I’m happy to read that they may be making a comeback. The decline is due to the overuse of pesticides and the spread of nonnative fire ants. Both eradicate harvester ant colonies, destroying the lizard’s principal source of food. The Texas horned lizard is now a protected species, and, in Texas, it is illegal to take, possess, transport, or sell them without a special permit.

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, issue August/September 2018, “Texas horned lizards once occurred throughout Texas, but now only a few populations remain. Efforts to move Texas horned lizards from one location in Texas to another, with the hope of establishing new self-sustaining populations in previously occupied habitats, are underway. Several Texas zoos are also working to develop colonies for reintroduction programs. RAWA (Recovering America’s Wildlife Act) funding would pay for “lizard factories” to help with reintroduction efforts.”

I shared a post about my findings on social media and received some interesting comments from my friends and followers.

One friend whom I’ve known since my early teen years lives in a small Texas town. She told me they have a horny toad festival every year called The Old Rip Festival. And it’s all about a horny toad named Old Rip! She sent me a link to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine website. It tells all about the legend, lore, and legacy of Old Rip, a horny toad that supposedly lived for 31 years!

Another follower comments, “you still see these in West Texas and Panhandle. Fire ants haven’t taken over every inch of ground as they have here, and harvester ants are still there, so that helps with the “horny toads.” Hope they make a comeback here someday.”

Artist Comments

‘Red and White Cosmos Flowers’ is a quiet little painting with a cheerful heart. I wanted to capture the simple elegance of cosmos blooms—the kind you might pass by without a second thought, but that have a certain charm if you stop and look. I arranged them in two small vases, letting the shapes and colors play off each other in an easy, balanced composition.

The red and white petals were chosen deliberately—they contrast just enough to keep things visually interesting without overwhelming the senses. And the background? That was all about pulling everything together. The vivid tone sets the stage, lifting the flowers forward and giving them space to stand out. It’s a painting that doesn’t fuss or shout, but quietly celebrates natural beauty in an everyday moment.
