Artists frequently draw inspiration from their surroundings. We live out in the country. One of our neighbors lives down the road and around the corner from us. He has a large pond near the road with a small dock and a rowboat tied to it. Across from him is another neighbor who also has a pond near the road. It’s a smaller pond with lily pads. We pass by these two ponds almost every day on our way to and from our place to the nearby towns. The inspiration for this painting came from our neighbor’s ponds.

The Texas Longhorn is a common breed of registered cattle in Texas. They get their name from the breed’s characteristic longhorns. Some sets of horns on these massive bovines can reach a span of 7 feet from tip to tip. You have to see one of these magnificent animals in person to appreciate those vast horns. I live in East Texas, and there are several longhorn ranches near our small homestead. I love driving past those places and seeing the longhorns grazing and resting in their pastures. They were the inspiration behind this painting of a Texas Longhorn sitting in a meadow.

Some Fun Facts About the Texas Longhorn

- The Texas Longhorn is descended from the first cattle brought to America by Christopher Columbus, which bred with native cattle. The breed is made up of around 80 percent Spanish blood and 20 percent “mongrel” heritage.
- Texas Longhorns come in all colors and patterns, and no two look exactly alike. Their coat pattern can be flamboyant and loud, while others are more subtle in color.
- Both male and female Longhorns have horns, although they will vary in shape and length according to gender. Longer horns are more desirable. The longer the horns, the more valuable the cow or bull. Calves will begin to grow their horns by three weeks of age.
- There are Texas Longhorn ranches all over America. Longhorns easily adapt to all temperatures, from hot to cold climates. This breed of cattle can thrive in terrains and climates where other breeds have difficulty living.

The most eye-catching feature of this painting is that big orange moon in the night sky with a silhouetted egret flying by. Looking at it, one can easily imagine what it would be like to “fly away” to Earth’s only satellite.

The night sky is one of my favorite things. I love looking up at it to see the vastness of outer space, the faraway planets, the milky way along with all the stars and constellations, and of course, Earth’s moon in whichever stage it happens to be in at the time. I especially love seeing our moon shining so brightly it makes the night look like it’s daytime!

‘Up the Steps’ began with a photograph—a quiet architectural moment that stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t elaborate or dramatic, but something about those stairs pulled me in. The way they rose gently into the light made me feel as though I could walk right up and disappear into that stillness. That sense of quiet movement is what captured my imagination.

As with most reference photos, I didn’t simply recreate it—I reshaped the composition to better serve the story I saw in it. I refined angles, softened light, and allowed the scene to breathe. My brush followed the geometry with care, but my goal was to evoke more than structure. I wanted to invite wonder: What lies beyond the last step? What kind of silence waits around the corner?

This painting isn’t just a study in architecture—it’s a meditation on possibility. With each stroke, I found myself leaning into the idea that some paths don’t need a destination to feel complete.

Flamingos are a favorite bird for artists to paint because of their brightly colored feathers, graceful S-shaped necks and stilt-like legs. For a long time, I’ve wanted to do a painting of a flamingo and I have finally accomplished it.

- Flamingos are one of the world’s most recognizable wading birds. They are found in freshwater and saltwater mudflats, lakes, coastal lagoons, and marshlands worldwide.
- Carotene in their diet is what causes their feathers to become pink, orange, or red. It’s the same component that gives carrots their orange color and tomatoes red.
- In the wild, the lifespan of a flamingo is anywhere between 20 and 30 years, but in captivity, they can live up to 50 years or longer. The oldest known flamingo reached the age of 83.
- Flamingos lay only a single egg each year, and if something happens to it, they usually do not lay another one.
- Chicks are born with gray or white fluffy feathers. It takes up to three years to develop their pink, orange, or red feathers.

Space art has become my favorite genre of creative expression because it allows my imagination to travel to off-world locations. However, because I am a realism artist, I want to keep my art as realistic as possible. In my efforts to accomplish realistic looking space paintings, I often study NASA images and photos of galaxies, planets, stars, and suns. I also look up at the night sky to observe the Moon, stars and constellations.

If you’re a fan of astronomy like me, you love a good night sky display, and comets are among the greatest of showmen. They don’t disappoint. Comets are among the most spectacular celestial events, with their bright, luminous “coma” and long dust and ion tails. They can appear out of nowhere and be visible for months at a time as they travel along their paths (orbits) around the Sun, creating a breathtaking and ever-changing sight.

A Few Things About Comets

Comets are best known for their long, streaming tails and are typically named for their discoverers.
They are made of mostly ice, dust, and frozen forms of various gases and molecules. They form far away from the Sun where the ices don’t melt.
They orbit the Sun in a more elliptical, or oval-shaped, path. As their path moves them closer to the Sun, they warm and begin to release their gases. The closer a comet gets to the Sun, the longer and brighter its tail will grow.
Comets range in size from a few miles wide to the largest known size of about 85 miles wide.
