Artist Comments: My husband and I visited Devils Tower National Monument in the summer of 2016. This place is a unique geological rock tower which rises above the grassy plains of northeast Wyoming. At the time we were vacationing in Rapid City, South Dakota and since the tower was within driving distance of our hotel, we simply could not pass up the opportunity to visit this “one-of-a-kind natural wonder.”

Devils Tower could be seen from miles away as we made our approach to the national park. Upon arriving at our destination we drove through the 2.1 square mile park which surrounded the monument. We couldn’t help but notice the tower as it was the centerpiece of the park. It looked like a giant granite tree stump with a flat summit and fluted sides.

Devils Tower stands more than 867 feet from its base to the summit and measures approximately 180 feet by 300 feet at the top and is about a mile in circumference at the base. Around the base of the tower is a 1.25-mile self-guided hiking trail that provided us with spectacular close-up views of the tower. There was another much wider 3-mile trail that also loops around the tower, but we didn’t take that one. We spent a better part of the day there exploring and learning all we could about the tower before heading back to the hotel. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Why “Devils Tower” and Not “Devil’s Tower”?

Devils Tower was declared America’s first official national monument by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. Originally it was called “Devil’s Tower” with an apostrophe, however, somewhere along the way the apostrophe was dropped due to clerical error and was never corrected. To this day it is still called Devils Tower with no apostrophe.

Artist Comments: This painting is a depiction of Delicate Arch against the night sky. Delicate Arch is a 65-foot-tall by 45-foot-wide natural arch located in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. This particular arch is the largest free-standing arch in the park. It is the most visited of all the 2000 geological formations within the park and receives visitors from all around the world. Through the years, the arch has had more than a few names, from “Cowboy’s Chaps”, “Schoolmarms Bloomer’s”, and “Old Maid’s Bloomers” to the prosaic “Salt Wash Arch”. The current name “Delicate” was given to the arch in 1934. The arch was formed by gradual wearing away of the sandstone by weathering and erosion. The other arches in the park were formed in the same manor. Delicate Arch is the most famous of all the arches in the national park and has become a symbolic icon for the state if Utah.

More information about the arch can be found by visiting this website.

Anyone who has visited this national park would probably agree it looks like the terrain of some faraway planet. I had the opportunity to visit this marvelous park in my younger days and it was a fascinating place that I definitely want to visit again someday.

Artist Comments: In 2015 my husband Robert and I traveled to Amarillo TX on vacation. While there we visited the Palo Duro Canyon State Park several times as it quickly became the highlight of our trip. The Lighthouse Monument is one of many “must see” attractions when visiting this park. Multiple visits to the canyon also provided me with a lot of photo ops that will be used as reference material for future paintings of this park.

Fun Facts About Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo TX. Also nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of Texas” because of its size and its resemblance to the Grand Canyon located in Arizona. It is the second largest canyon in the U.S. measuring 120 miles long, 20 miles at its widest point and 800 feet at its maximum depth. It also has over 29,000 scenic acres for the tourist or vacationer to enjoy. Just like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Palo Duro Canyon features dramatic geological features, multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls.

For the park visitor there are hiking trails, camp grounds, horse back riding and more! The canyon is also host to TEXAS Outdoor Musical, the longest running musical ever performed on stage. This world renown musical drama has been performed on an outdoor stage in the canyon since 1965.

Peggy’s Cove Collection

Peggy’s Cove is one of the numerous small fishing communities located on the eastern shores of St. Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia. This location is also famous for the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse (established 1868). Each year many artists and photographers flock to this location to capture its beauty in their creative works. It is also a favorite tourist destination for many vacationers.

The Peggy’s Cove Series didn’t start out to be a series. I did my first painting of this series in 2005 while living on the east coast in the Norfolk VA area. I loved the way the bright red house stood out in contrast to the water and landscape around it, so I decided to do a painting of this famous Nova Scotia cove.  Two years later the painting sold to a doctor living in Maine. Shortly after the sale a collector from Louisiana commissioned me to do two more paintings of the cove for her. I love this location in Canada and plan on more paintings to add to this series in the near future.

A lot of artists have painted this famous cove and it’s easy to see why. You may have noticed that two of the painting are very similar. They are of the same viewpoint, however, since I strive to not create two identical paintings I did paint some differences between the two.

Scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro

Africa landscape mountain commission painting

© Copyright 2011 – Present

Size: 24″ x 18″
Support: Gallery wrap stretched canvas
Description: A snow painting of a hiker scaling up Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. This painting was commissioned by an art collector in New Jersey. If you desire something similar, visit How To Commission A Painting for more information.

I wanted you to know that I received the painting and presented it to Jim and he loved it! Thank you so much for all of your time and effort. It was well worth the wait! — A. Boutillier, Morristown NJ

Artist Comments: This was a commission painting done for a client who had hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro one year. The client supplied the photo from her trip for this painting. Since this was a memorable trip for my client, I kept the painting as close to the photograph as possible. My client loved the finished painting and proudly displays it in her living room where it receives many favorable comments from her guests.

About Mt. Kilimanjaro

Located in Tanzania Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro is actually a dormant volcano and also happens to be the highest mountain in Africa at 19,340 feet above sea level. Its three volcanic cones are named Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It isn’t certain where the name Kilimanjaro originates from, but there are several theories about that. A few possible meanings could be Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness, or Mountain of Caravans. Or it might not be any of these.

This mountain is a popular attraction for hikers and mountain climbers from all over the globe. Some estimate that more people have died trekking up Mt. Kilimanjaro than Mount Everest. However, it needs to be pointed out that Everest is attempted by significantly fewer climbers than Kilimanjaro.

The Garden Tomb

Gethsemane Israel painting

Description: An oil painting of a famous Israeli garden visited by many every year. It depicts the Garden Tomb at Gethsemane.

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale. However, if you love this painting and want one of your own, she does do art commissions. Visit How To Commission A Painting for more information.

Artist Comments: This painting of a rock-cut tomb situated in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem, and is one of my personal favorites. This famous Israeli location is believed by many Christians to be the burial and resurrection place of Jesus Christ after His crucifixion at Golgotha, the place of the skull. Being a devout Christian, this particular painting has a lot of personal meaning for me. It is one of two I painted of this famous travel place. The other painting is called The Garden Tomb at Sunset.

The Burial and Resurrection of Jesus the Christ
“As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.” Matthew 27:57-60

“He is not here: for He is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” Matthew 28:6

The Garden Tomb is part of the Holy Lands series.

Artist Comments: This Gothic church was originally painted and made famous by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in June 1890. Van Gogh’s church is located in Auvers, France. I wanted to do my own rendition of this lovely church building and the results of that desire are what you see here. You can find out more about Van Gogh’s rendition of this church on Wikipedia: The Church at Auvers.

Although our styles are vastly different, Van Gogh is a favorite painter of mine. I love much of his work, from that vase of sunflowers to this old church in the village where he lived before his death. Many of his oil paintings were characterized by bold, dramatic colors emphasized by impulsive and expressive brushwork. He painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits.

According to Wikipedia, Van Gogh is considered among the “most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.”  He painted around 860 oil paintings and many of these were painted during the last two years of his life. He died at age 37 by a self inflicted wound. You can read more about Van Gogh here.

This canvas art is part of a series of paintings called the Christian Art Series.
