The Magnificence of Texas Sunsets

Cowboy Sunset painting by Teresa Bernard.

Ah, the magnificence of Texas sunsets! One of the most beautiful places in the world to capture a sunset in oil on canvas is Texas. Being a native Texan, of course, I’m prejudiced!

With its vast open prairies, cacti, ghost towns, old west culture, and billowy clouds, the Lone Star State makes an excellent backdrop for some of the most breathtaking sunsets anywhere in the world. Artists like me, who are fortunate enough to reside here, have a plethora of opportunities to capture the setting sun in all its glory and magnificence in our sunset paintings. Those who don’t live here can delight in making trips to Texas to see the setting sun for themselves and take it back to their studios in the form of photos or sketches for future paintings.

With the varied skylines that each metropolitan has to offer, Texas cities can make for a stunning sunset cityscape. Artists can also witness the sunset on the beach along the Gulf of Mexico, or travel west for a more rugged landscape and catch a sight of the mountain peaks of Big Bend National Park silhouetted against an orange glowing sky.

Texas Sunsets

Artists flock to Texas every year to capture the setting sun in all its splendor as it disappears below the horizon. Here’s why:

    • A lovely sunset allows one to enjoy the better things in life.
    • A beautiful sunset helps to inspire you.

Some Quotes About Sunsets

“Nature paints not; In oils, but frescoes the great dome of heaven; With sunsets, and the lovely forms of clouds; And flying vapors.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Peace… is seeing a sunset, and knowing Who to thank.” – Unknown

“The setting sun, and the music at the close, As the last taste of sweets, is sweetest last, Writ in remembrance more than long things past.” – William Shakespeare

“Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the Creator.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Some of the most gorgeous sunsets in the world happen right here in Texas, but of course, I might be just a tad bit biased. I love the bright, colorful sunsets that I get to enjoy almost every evening. And I also love the idea of cowboys, horses, and the Old West.

This painting with a cowboy gazing off into the sunset reminds me of my childhood where pretty much all you could watch on TV were westerns. It was a fantasy life all us kids dreamed about living someday. We would pretend to be cowboys and rode imaginary horses for hours until mom called us in for supper.

When my husband decided it was time to retire from the Navy and settle down to live life as civilians, we bought some land and built a small ranch in East Texas with a couple of horses, a donkey, and a few heads of cattle. It was our dream to live the cowboy way of life.

Your Feedback

“Very impressive! I’m not an expert but I hate modern art. To me a real artist can capture a magical moment in time and share its essence with the world. Most “experts” lost credibility with me when they started pushing crap that could be duplicated by preschoolers. I think we’re all learning a lot about the “crap art” scam from Hunter [Biden].” ~ Dustythepainter, Gab

“Absolutely love your sunset and portrait of a man. What is the price for a commissioned painting from a photo?” — Kerri K., St. Paul MN

“From one artist to another, this is amazing!” — Cameron, Businesses of Gab, Gab

Artist Comments

This painting is one of my earlier paintings and unfortunately, I don’t have a better photo of it. It is so much more beautiful in person! I composed it using a reference photo taken by my brother-in-law who photographed the scenery that inspired this vivid Texas sunset painting. The photo was taken near Austin, TX where he lives with his wife.

Texas is known for having some of the loveliest sunsets in America. As a native of Texas, I can attest to that myself. I enjoy painting Texas sunsets for so many reasons, but mostly I love the rich, vibrant colors present in them!
