Artist Comments

This is a contemporary still life painting with red and yellow onions. Why did I choose to paint this? I wanted to do something a little different from the other still lifes I’ve painted in the past. The shapes, color, and placement of the onions appealed to me as well. This painting would look great in your formal dining room, a café, or a restaurant setting.

Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #1

antique sewing thread painting
Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #1 © Copyright 2021 – Present

Size: 6″ w x 6″ h
Support: Gallery Wrap Stretched Canvas
Description:  A small still life painting featuring two antique wooden spools with sewing thread. The spools are filled with colored thread; one with red thread and the other with blue. The blue spool of thread has a sewing needle sticking through it. The background is painted in a neutral gray color. This is one of two paintings in a series and is signed by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

This is a small painting measuring 6×6 inches. Its compact size makes it perfect for small or limited spaces. It is hand-painted on gallery wrap stretched canvas and won’t need a frame because the painting’s image extends around the edges of the canvas support giving it a contemporary look. Whether you choose to have it framed or leave it unframed, it will look great in your home or office, or any place it is displayed.

Artist Comments

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Antique Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age, and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools.

The wooden spools you may find today are 50+ years old and are now considered antiques. Today sewing thread comes on spools made of plastic; and our grandmothers, and most assuredly, our mothers would have sewn their sewing projects using thread spun on plastic spools.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child in the 60-70s. As I grew older, my grandmother began teaching me how to sew doll clothes and other items. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for just the right color of thread I needed, and I remember finding some wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It had become more economical for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool, don’t throw it away; hang on to it. Wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and its condition.

Companion Painting

Sewing Thread #1 has a companion painting called “Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread #2.” Companion paintings are sold separately. Whether purchased with its companion or not, either of these paintings will look great displayed in a sewing or craft room.

Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup

fine china teacup painting
Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup © Copyright 2020 – Present

Size: 6″ w x 6″ h
Support: Gallery Wrap Stretched Canvas
Description:  A small still life painting of a fine china teacup and saucer that grandma or great-grandma might drink from. The teacup and saucer have burgundy and gold designs on them. And there is also a burgundy silk flower sitting in the saucer next to the teacup. The background is dark with a gold tabletop. This delicate and colorful teacup painting would be the perfect addition to a small kitchen, dining area, or living room to add a touch of class to the space. The painting is signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

This painting’s small size makes it perfect for small rooms or areas where space is limited. It measures 6×6 inches and is hand-painted on gallery wrap stretched canvas. Grandma’s Teacup won’t need a frame because the painting’s composition spreads out around the edges of the canvas giving it a fashionable look. Framed or unframed, this painting will look great in your home or office, or any place it is put on view.

Artist Comments

I named this painting Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup because, in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups, and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans. Well, at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her upcoming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be ludicrous to do so as the china set would never get used except for holidays and perhaps rarely even then.

For many Americans, I guess there is no longer any need for the loving memories that come from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions like our great-grandmas did, or is there? And I guess it has been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when consumed from a cup made of fine china. And not failing to mention, teacups are pretty, and they are dainty, which also helps to make a special occasion just that much more special.

So what are you waiting for? Pull out great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to good use today. You’re not getting any younger.

Tractor Tire, A Study of Texture

still life painting with tractor tire
Tractor Tire, A Study of Texture © Copyright 2016 – Present

Size: 12″ w x 16″ h
Support: Gallery Wrap Stretched Canvas
Description: A painting of a close-up of a tractor tire, an ordinary farm object. The tire is aged and the rim has some rust.  In the background is a wood plank floor with another tire peeking in. This painting is perfect for anyone who loves farm, country, tractors, or rustic decor.

This work of art will not need a frame as the painted composition extends around the edges of the canvas. Hand-painted and signed by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

Tractor Tire was a little bit of an experiment for me. Sometimes I like to give myself challenges. In this particular challenge, I wanted to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I think I achieved that goal.

What I like most about this painting is the different textures present in it — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusty metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many neat things happening in this painting; it was just a fun one to paint!

This painting would be the perfect art piece for the man cave, especially if you love farm tractors or cars. I can imagine no one would have ever thought a tractor tire would be the focal point for a painting.

The Study

the study vintage painting
The Study © Copyright 2004 – Present

Size: 14″ w x 11″ h
Support: Traditional-style Stretched Canvas
Description: This painting depicts a vintage-style still life of objects which would typically be found in a home office or study. The still life consists of a stack of hard-cover books, a feather quill pen, a candlestick sitting in a tall candle holder, and a pair of spectacles and a glass of wine; all sitting on top of an antique wood desk. The monochromatic (limited color) palette it is painted in gives this painting a vintage look. The painting is signed by fine artist Teresa Bernard.

The Study is a vintage still life painting hand-painted on a traditional-style stretched canvas with the sides left raw or unpainted. It will need to be mounted in a frame before it is put on display. Adding a frame will give the painting a finished look.

Artist Comments

The Study is the first painting I’ve done using a limited color palette. What this means is that I deliberately chose to restrict the number of paint colors I used when doing this painting. The sepias I chose to use in this still life give it a vintage look.  This would be great wall décor for an office, study, den, or even a “man cave.”

Artist Comments

Still Life with Clay Pottery is a monochromatic painting that features everyday household items that would have been found in a typical kitchen in Israel or Jordan during the Iron Age (1200-586 B.C.). While visiting the “Holy Land Photos” website, I found some interesting photos of a reconstructed Israelite House on display at the Haaretz Museum in north Tel Aviv. This painting is from one of those photos.

Artist Comments

This rustic oil painting with horse tack is a study of texture; weathered wood, rusty chain, and metal. Its composition utilizes horse tack hanging on an old barn door. A still life doesn’t always have to be a traditional type using flowers, fruit, or figurines. It can be composed of any inanimate object. This painting was a study of texture.
