Artist Comments

This is a contemporary still life painting with red and yellow onions. Why did I choose to paint this? I wanted to do something a little different from the other still lifes I’ve painted in the past. The shapes, color, and placement of the onions appealed to me as well. This painting would look great in your dining room, a café, or a restaurant setting.

Artist Comments

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Antique Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age, and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools.

The wooden spools you may find today are 50+ years old and are now antiques. Today sewing thread comes on spools made of plastic; and our grandmothers, and most assuredly, our mothers would have sewn their sewing projects using thread spun on plastic spools.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child in the 60-70s. As I grew older, my grandmother began teaching me how to sew doll clothes and other items. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for just the right color of thread I needed, and I remember finding some wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It had become more economical for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool, don’t throw it away; hang on to it. Wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and its condition.

Artist Comments

I named this painting Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup because, in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups, and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans. Well, at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her upcoming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be ludicrous to do so as the china set would never get used except for holidays and perhaps rarely even then.

For many Americans, I guess there is no longer any need for the loving memories that come from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions like our great-grandmas did, or is there? And I guess it has been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when consumed from a cup made of fine china. And not failing to mention, teacups are pretty, and they are dainty, which also helps to make a special occasion just that much more special.

So what are you waiting for? Pull out great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to good use today. You’re not getting any younger.

Artist Comments

This oil painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. Sometimes I like to give myself challenges. In this particular challenge, I wanted to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I think I achieved that goal. What do you think?

What I like most about this painting is the different textures present in it — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusty metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many neat things happening in this painting; it was just a fun one to paint!

I believe an artist’s environment significantly influences the type of art they create — I know it does me. I can always find some interesting objects to paint here on our small Texas ranch; however, I don’t limit myself. I do paint other locations too. When we go on vacation, I always take my camera with me to capture as much as possible in photos that will be used someday as reference material for future paintings.

This painting would be the perfect art piece for the man cave, especially if you love farm tractors or cars. I can imagine no one would have ever thought a tractor tire would be the focal point for a painting, but it isn’t the only farm equipment I’ve painted. A few years back, I did a painting of some horse tack too. Check out Barn Door with Horse Tack.

Still Life with Tractor Tire reminds me of another painting I did several years ago. It also has a lot of texture. It is called Marine Still Life with Boat Fenders.

Barn Door with Horse Tack

horse tack painting
© Copyright 2003 – Present

Size: 12″ x 9″

Description: A rustic still life painting featuring horse tack hanging from an old barn door.  This painting is composed on a quality canvas panel and does require a frame before it is displayed.

SOLD: This painting was sold to a private art collector in Illinois and is no longer available.

Artist Comments

This rustic oil painting is another example of a non-traditional still life. It is a composition utilizing horse tack hanging on an old barn door. A still life doesn’t always have to be a traditional type using flowers, fruit, or figurines. It can be composed of any inanimate object. This painting was a study of texture.

Artist Comments

This vintage look painting of the study is a still life consisting of ordinary objects found in a home office or study.

The Study is the first painting I’ve done using a limited color palette. What this means is, I deliberately chose to restrict the number of paint colors I used when doing this painting. The sepias I chose to use in this still life give it a vintage look.  This would be great wall décor for an office, study, den, or even a “man cave.”

This clay pottery painting features everyday household items that would have been found in a typical kitchen in Israel or Jordan during the Iron Age (1200-586 B.C.). While visiting the “Holy Land Photos” website, I came across some interesting photos of a reconstructed Israelite House on display at the Haaretz Museum in north Tel Aviv. This painting is from one of those photos.

An artist’s inspiration can come from many places. A side-table with an interesting table setting of fruit, an old candle, and a metal goblet was the inspiration for this still life painting.
