Artist Comments:

This is a contemporary still life painting with red and yellow onions. Why did I choose to paint this? I wanted to do something a little different from the other still lifes I’ve painted in the past. The shapes, color and placement of the onions appealed to me as well. This painting would look great in your dinning room, a café or restaurant setting.

Artist Comments:

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools, but not so much today. Nowadays, sewing thread comes on plastic spools.

Manufacturers are no longer making wooden thread spools, but that doesn’t mean they have no value. They still have some usefulness. One advantage of these vintage thread spools is they last a long time and can be used in numerous other ways once their thread is used up.

When I was a child, I remember playing with empty wooden spools. I strung them up on string and made necklaces with them. I also used them for furniture, among other things, when I played with my Barbie dolls.

Wooden thread spools can be used for various arts and craft projects. By using your imagination you could turn them into some beautiful artwork or something else that would give them some renewed purpose. Use them yourself or for a project your children could enjoy. Better yet, use them in a project that you and your children could enjoy doing together.

Artist Comments:

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools. The wooden spools you might find today are now 50+ years old and are considered antiques. Now sewing thread comes on spools made of plastic and our own grandmothers, and most assuredly our mothers,  would have sewn their sewing projects using thread spun on plastic spools.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child back in the 60-70s, and as I got older I remember being taught how to sew by my grandmother. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I do remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for the right color of thread that I needed and finding wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It had become more economical for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool don’t throw it away, hang on to it, wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and the condition it is in.

Artist Comments

I named this painting Great-Grandma’s Teacup because in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans…well at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her up-coming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be absolutely ludicrous to do so as the set would most likely never be used except for holidays and perhaps maybe rarely even then.

For many Americans, I guess there is no longer any need for the loving memories that can be made from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions like our great grandmas did…or is there? And I guess it has been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when consumed from a cup made of fine china. And not failing to mention teacups are pretty and they are dainty, which also helps to make a special occasion just that much more special.

So what are you waiting for? Pull out great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to good use today. You’re not getting any younger.

Artist Comments

This oil painting was a little bit of an experiment for me. Sometimes I like to give myself challenges. In this particular challenge, I wanted to see if I could paint rubber and make it look like rubber. I think that goal was achieved. What do you think?

What I like most about this painting is all of the different textures present in it — the wood, the rubber, and even the rusty metal rim. It was an enjoyable challenge painting all those textures and getting them just right. In addition, there are the warm colors that contrast against the cool ones. There are so many neat things happening in this painting it was just a fun one to paint!

I believe an artist’s environment has a huge influence on the type of art they create — I know it does me. I can always find some interesting objects to paint here on our small Texas ranch, however, I don’t limit myself, I do paint other locations too. When we go on vacation I always take my camera with me to capture as much as I can in photos that will be used someday as reference material for future paintings.

This painting would be the perfect art piece for the man cave especially if you love farm tractors or even cars. I can imagine no one would have ever thought a tractor tire would be the focal point for a painting, but it isn’t the only farm equipment I’ve painted. A few years back I did a painting of some horse tack too. Check out Barn Door with Horse Tack.

Still Life with Tractor Tire reminds me of another panting I did several years ago. It also has a lot of texture. It is called Marine Still Life with Boat Fenders.

Artist Comments

This is a typical still life painting of bread, grapes and wine,  elements often used by artists when painting a communion still life. However, I added a few more elements to my rendition, a candle representing Jesus Christ the light of the world, and The Holy Bible the Word of God.

God is a very big part of my life. I felt inspired to do some paintings which contain an inspirational message and this painting is one of those. It depicts the bread and wine of communion and has special meaning to me.

This piece of wall art is part of a series of paintings called the Christian Art Series.

A typical still life painting using traditional subject matter. This still life was inspired by typical objects found in a home office or study.

The Study is the first painting I’ve done using a limited color palette. What this means is, I deliberately chose to restrict the number of paint colors I used when doing this painting. The sepias I chose to use in this still life give it a vintage look.  This would be great wall décor for an office, study, den, or even a “man cave.”

This painting is of common household items that would have been found in a typical kitchen in Israel or Jordan during the Iron Age (1200-586 B.C.). While visiting the Web site “Holy Land Photos” I came across some interesting photos of a reconstructed Israelite House on display at the Haaretz Museum in north Tel Aviv. This painting is from one of those photos.

The first reference the Bible makes regarding use of iron is found in 1 Samuel 13:19-21 when it mentions that the Philistines had swords. According to archaeology, the iron age is the final technological and cultural stage in the Stone-Bronze-Iron-Age sequence.

This piece of wall art is part of a series of paintings called the Bible Lands Series.

Note: Permission to use photo as painting source is courtesy of Holy Land Photos.

An artist’s inspiration can come from many places. This still life was inspired by a side-table with an interesting table setting of fruit, an old candle and a metal goblet.
