This painting is fan art of the famous Starship Enterprise from the iconic 1960s TV show Star Trek. It was my favorite show when I was a kid, and it still is!

This isn’t the first time I’ve painted the Enterprise. I painted the famous starship years ago when I was a young teen and entered it in a local art show. My painting got a lot of attention back then, and I remember there were many conversations over it. Unfortunately, it’s been so long ago that I can’t remember if it was a juried art show or not. However, I do remember that the painting sold, and that was very exciting for a teenager just starting out as an artist of oil paintings.

The title for this painting came from the show’s opening monologue.

Star Trek Opening Monologue

Space: the final frontier.
These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
Its 5-year mission:
To explore strange new worlds;
To seek out new life and new civilizations;
To boldly go where no man has gone before!

I love great sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Gate; just about any story where space travel is involved. I should have grown up to be an astronaut instead of an artist, well, maybe. The bottom line is, I love adventure, and to me, traveling through the far reaches of outer space would be the ultimate in adventure.  It was only natural that I create a painting with the subject of space travel.

In addition to loving the idea of space travel, I am very interested in our national space program and the newly formed United States Space Force. I’m amazed at the many modern inventions we take for granted made possible because of space technology. Inventions like long-distance telecommunications, cellphones, water filters, invisible braces, scratch-resistant lenses used in our eyeglasses, and even memory foam used to make our mattresses. Other inventions include solar energy and the insulation used in our attics and walls and portable cordless vacuums, workout equipment, and CatScans. Even smoke detectors, cordless tools, and artificial limbs, to name just a few. Indeed space travel and exploration have created new markets and new technologies that have spurred economic growth and enriched our lives in many ways.

Lastly, I call this painting “…The Next Frontier” because I do not believe space exploration is our final destiny. We explore space; it is our next frontier, not our last. The last frontier is life with our Creator God in His kingdom for all eternity! The Bible has much to say about this topic. Check it out for yourself!

Check out this website for a list of those inventions.

Your Feedback

“When I was a little kid, I loved to draw spaceships during every idle moment. The adult caregivers eventually cured me of that allegedly bad habit. I know it doesn’t pay well, but please continue with your space-themed art. I think your painting is beautiful!” — Austin Morris, Space And The Great Beyond Also Aliens, Gab

The First Man on the Moon painting is a tribute to American Astronaut Neil Armstrong. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to land a spacecraft on the moon. However, it was Armstrong who took that first step onto its surface. A third crew member, Michael Collins, was alone orbiting the Moon in the Command Module Columbia awaiting their return.

Armstrong was commander for the Apollo 11 lunar mission. In this historic mission, Armstrong became a global hero the instant he made that “one giant leap for mankind” with a small step onto the moon’s surface. The crew of Columbia took a TV camera with them so the world could watch as they spent about 2 hours on the lunar surface collecting soil samples and conducting a few experiments.

I was just a young girl the day Armstrong walked on the moon, and I don’t remember a lot about it, but I do remember watching the footage on TV. During that time, Armstrong and Aldrin also took photographs, unveiled a plaque to commemorate their flight, and planted the United States flag.

Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at 82 years of age. I finished this painting a few months before his death.

About The U.S. Flag “Waving On The Moon”

An admirer of this painting asked about the flag. He wanted to know why it appears to be waving since  “… the flag would be straight and flat in space because there isn’t any wind. ”

I replied, “Yes, you are correct, and I had considered that when I was composing this painting.” I did some research on the matter before I started my work. This is what I discovered:

    • The NASA photo I used as a reference photo has ripples in the flag.
    • The flag pole itself has a crossbar at the top, which prevents the flag from drooping down.
    • Armstrong used a twisting motion to plant the flag pole into the ground causing the flag to wave back and forth. And since there is low gravity on the moon, what is set in motion tends to stay in motion for a very long time. When the photo was snapped, this created the impression the flag was blowing in the wind.
