Artist Comments

Sisters in Lavender painting is one of my favorite works and was pleasurable to paint. The calm, serene and tranquil feeling one gets viewing this artwork appeals to me. The ladies in the composition are no one specifically, just two young ladies who could be sisters enjoying an afternoon in a vast field of lavender flowers. I can imagine the scent of lavender wafting through the air, filling their noses with a sweet aroma as they stroll through the beautiful lavender, creating some treasured memories.

Artist Comments

A Boy and His Dog is a painting reminiscent of the happiest times in life when we were carefree and simple things amazed us. Sometimes life gets so complicated that it’s nice to stop and remember the days of our youth.

When my children were young, like the little boy in this painting, I loved to watch their fascination with the simplest things in life. Things that, as an adult, I often took for granted. Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and enjoy simple pleasures like this again.

Artist Comments

This painting of a young girl in a red dress was fun because I used a model of someone I knew, sort of. She is the granddaughter of a friend I attended high school with. My friend permitted me to use the photo she had taken of her granddaughter as a reference for this painting.

For the most part, the painting appears just as it does in the reference photo except for the lily pads,  koi fish, and cattails. I added those elements to make the composition more interesting and to help further develop the story this painting portrays.

I have done a few portraits in my art career, but I do not consider myself a portrait artist. Instead, I like to paint people doing something or observing their surroundings in natural settings. These types of paintings tell a story.

The faces in my people paintings are all turned away from the viewer because they are not meant to be portraits of a recognizable person. They are whomever the viewer wants them to be.

I also work on commission and have painted for fellow art collectors and enthusiasts all over the world. If you have a specific painting in mind that you’d like me to paint for you, click here for more information on “How to Commission a Painting.”

Artist Comments

Ballet is a form of dance and artistic expression that I admire. I enjoy going to see live ballet performances. Nothing beats seeing these gifted musicians perform live. It’s a sight to behold as one takes in the music, the sets, the ambiance, and the grace with which these dancers move across the stage telling a story.

Performing ballet is not for “the faint at heart.” Dancers who want to become professional dancers begin training as young as two years old. And becoming a member of a professional dance company requires years of extensive training and proper technique. Furthermore, because the style and technique of this art form can be so demanding on the body, ballerinas are frequently at high risk of injury.

I was in my late teens when I saw my first ballet performance. My best friend Cyndie and her family had tickets to see the Nutcracker Suite at a local theater. I can’t remember why, but Cyndie couldn’t attend, so she gave me her ticket. She felt of all her friends, I would appreciate the ballet the most, and she was right! Thank you, Cyndie, for allowing me to have your seat at the ballet. I’ve loved this art form ever since.

Portrait of Tera

A portrait of Tera in a painting.

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale.

About this Portrait Painting of Tera

Title: Portrait of Tera
Size:
16″ w x 20″ h
Support: Traditional-Style Stretched canvas
Description:  Portrait painting of Tera sitting in a library. Hand-painted on quality stretched canvas and signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This is a portrait painting of my daughter Tera. I painted it using her high school senior portrait as a reference photo. However, the background in the painting is an entirely different setting than what was used in the photo. When I did her painting, Tera was attending college and studying to become a librarian, so I chose a library setting for the background instead.

All through high school, Tera wanted to become a librarian and even worked after school and on weekends at a local branch of the public library. She loved books and reading and still does to this day. The background in her painting is of a fictional place and is not the library she was working at during high school.

This was a fun painting to do, and I took my time with it as I wanted everything to be just right. First of all, the subject matter is near and very dear to my heart. Secondly, it was both fun and challenging to paint all those books on the shelves. I captured a very good likeness of Tera with this painting; however, when I photographed it for my website, I realize my photography skills need some improvement!

Portrait of Tera is part of my private art collection and is not for sale. Someday it will be passed down to Tera as a family heirloom, but for now, it continues to hang on the wall in my living room.

Portrait of Robert

A portrait of Robert in a painting.

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale.

About this Portrait Painting of Robert

Title: Portrait of Robert
Size:
12″ w x 16″ h
Support: Traditional-Syle Stretched canvas
Description: A portrait painting of Robert at the helm of his sailboat. The American flag flies high over his left shoulder. This oil painting is hand-painted on traditional-style stretched canvas and signed by artist Teresa Bernard.

Artist Comments

This painting is a portrait of my husband, Robert, at the helm of our sailboat, Misty Blue. I did this painting from a photograph I took while on a boat trip up the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

Robert was in the Navy and was being transferred from Jacksonville, FL, to the naval base in Norfolk, VA. We needed to move our 36-foot sailboat from a marina near where we lived in Florida to Virginia, so we decided to sail it instead of having it shipped. That decision saved us a lot of money while making us rich with memories!

We were sailing in open waters up the east coast at the beginning of the trip, but a storm blew in, forcing us to go inland and up the ICW instead. Because it was my first sailing trip, the storm was a little frightening for me; however, Robert handled it and the sails like the sailing pro he is!

Robert was on deployment with his ship at sea for six months when I began working on his portrait. It was finished before he returned home. He had no idea I was painting him and was surprised to see his portrait when he returned home. It will be passed down to his son Travis as a family heirloom one day, but for now, it will reside in our living room.

Your Feedback

“Hi, I was just searching the web and wanted to look for original art, paintings, and drawings to inspire me. I love your artwork. You have a realism that really caught my eye. I like the Clown Fish. The portrait of the man on the boat is fantastic. I have a God-given talent that I need to re-discover and seeing your site and reading your ‘About Me‘ section was just what I needed. Thanks for doing what you do.”

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Another that really caught my eye especially is the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum–the light in the sky is particularly indicative of something spiritual, even if one didn’t know a thing about the religious significance of the place.” — Elena M., Columbia, MD
