Artist Comments

Sisters in Lavender painting is one of my favorite works and was pleasurable to paint. The calm, serene and tranquil feeling one gets viewing this artwork appeals to me. The ladies in the composition are no one specifically, just two young ladies who could be sisters enjoying an afternoon in a vast field of lavender flowers. I can imagine the smell of lavender wafting in the air and filling their noses with a sweet aroma as they stroll through the beautiful lavender, making some cherished memories.

“A Boy and His Dog” painting is reminiscent of the happiest times in life when we were carefree and simple things amazed us. Sometimes life gets so complicated that it’s nice to stop and remember the days of our youth.

When my children were young, like the little boy in this painting, I loved to watch their fascination with the simplest things in life. Things that, as an adult, I often took for granted. Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and enjoy simple pleasures like this again.

This painting of a young girl in a red dress was fun because I used a model of someone I knew, sort of. The girl in the red dress is the granddaughter of a friend I attended high school with. My friend permitted me to use the photo she had taken of her granddaughter as a reference for this painting.

For the most part, the painting appears just as it does in the reference photo except for the lily pads,  koi fish, and cattails. I added those elements to make the composition more interesting and to help further develop the story this painting portrays.

Artist Comments

I don’t consider myself a portrait artist, although I have done a few in my art career. Instead, I prefer to create paintings that feature people in a natural setting being engaged in some activity or observing their scenery. Such paintings convey a story. Even the portraits I have done are of individuals involved in their surroundings. Here are a couple of examples.

Portrait of Tera

portrait painting

Size: 16″ x 20″
Support: Stretched canvas
Description:  Portrait painting of Tera sitting in a library.

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale.

Artist Comments

This is a portrait painting of my daughter Tera. I painted it using her high school senior portrait as a reference photo. However, the background in the painting is an entirely different setting than what was used in the photo. When I did her painting, Tera was attending college studying to become a librarian, so I chose a library setting for the background instead.

All through high school, Tera wanted to become a librarian and even worked after school and weekends at a local branch of the public library. She loved books and reading and still does to this day. The background in her painting is of a fictional place and is not the library she was working at during high school.

This was a fun painting to do, and I took my time with it as I wanted everything to be just right. First of all, the subject matter is near and very dear to my heart. Secondly, it was both fun and challenging to paint all those books on the shelves. I captured a very good likeness of Tera with this painting; however, when I photographed it for my website, I realize my photography skills need some improvement!

Portrait of Tera is part of my private art collection and is not for sale. Someday it will be passed down to Tera as a family heirloom, but for now, it continues to hang on the wall in my living room.

Portrait of Robert

portrait of Robert painting
© Copyright 2003 – Present

Size: 12″ x 16″
Support: Stretched canvas
Description: A portrait painting of Robert at the helm of his sailboat. This oil painting on canvas is by artist Teresa Bernard. (See Artist Comments below.)

NOT FOR SALE: This painting is part of Teresa’s private art collection and is not for sale.

Artist Comments

This painting is a portrait of my husband Robert at the helm of our sailboat Misty Blue. I did this painting from a photo I took during a trip we made on the boat going up the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

On this trip, Robert was in the Navy and was being transferred from Jacksonville, FL, to the naval base in Norfolk, VA. We had to figure out a way to move our 36 ft. sailboat from a marina near where we lived in FL to VA, so we decided to sail it instead of having it shipped. That decision saved us a ton of money and made us rich with memories! At first, we were sailing out in open waters up the east coast, but a storm suddenly came up, forcing us to go inland and up the ICW instead. It was a bit frightening for me when we encountered that storm because it was my first sailing trip; however, Robert handled it and the sails like the sailing pro he is!

Robert was on deployment with his ship at sea for six months when I started his portrait. I finished it before his return. He had no idea I was doing this painting and was very surprised to see his portrait when he returned home.

This painting is part of my private art collection and is not for sale. One day it will be passed down to his son Travis as a family heirloom, but until that day comes, it will continue to hang in our living room.

Your Feedback

“Hi, I was just searching the web and wanted to look for original art, paintings, drawings to inspire me. I love your artwork. You have a realism that really caught my eye. I like the Clown Fish. The portrait of the man on the boat is fantastic. I have a God-given talent that I need to re-discover and seeing your site and reading your ‘About Me‘ section was just what I needed. Thanks for doing what you do.”

“I really like your paintings–the portrait of your husband is very unusual in composition and the backlighting–wish I could see it in real life. Another that really caught my eye especially is the Sea of Galilee at Capernaum–the light in the sky is particularly indicative of something spiritual, even if one didn’t know a thing about the religious significance of the place.” — Elena M., Columbia, MD

Artist Comments

This painting of a ballerina is no one I know, it’s just a painting of a ballet dancer. Ballet is a form of dance and artistic expression that I admire.

I love live ballet performances. Nothing can compare with watching these talented artists on stage. It is something to behold as one experiences the music, the sets, the ambiance, and the gracefulness of these dancers as they move across the, stage conveying a story.

Performing ballet is not for “the faint at heart.” Dancers start training as young as two years of age if they want to become professional dancers. And it takes years of extensive training and proper technique to hone one’s skill enough to become part of a professional dance company. In addition, ballerinas are often at high risk of injury because the style and technique of this art form can be so demanding on the body.

I was in my late teens when I saw my first ballet performance. My best friend Cyndie and her family had tickets to see the Nutcracker Suite at a local theater. I can’t remember why, but Cyndie couldn’t attend, so she gave me her ticket. She felt of all her friends, I would appreciate the ballet the most, and she was right! Thank you, Cyndie, for allowing me to have your seat at the ballet. I’ve loved this art form ever since.
