This painting is fan art of the famous Starship Enterprise from the iconic 1960s TV show Star Trek. It was my favorite show when I was a kid, and it still is!

This isn’t the first time I’ve painted the Enterprise. I painted the famous starship years ago when I was a young teen and entered it in a local art show. My painting got a lot of attention back then, and I remember there were many conversations over it. Unfortunately, it’s been so long ago that I can’t remember if it was a juried art show or not. However, I do remember that the painting sold, and that was very exciting for a teenager just starting out as an artist of oil paintings.

The title for this painting came from the show’s opening monologue.

Star Trek Opening Monologue

Space: the final frontier.
These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
Its 5-year mission:
To explore strange new worlds;
To seek out new life and new civilizations;
To boldly go where no man has gone before!

A few years ago, my husband and I took a trip to San Antonio, TX, the day after Thanksgiving. We planned for a long weekend. While there, we spent the evenings strolling the streets around the Alamo when we came across an artist selling his space art on the sidewalk. The interesting part about this, he was painting them right then and there as spectators watched. It was fascinating to watch him create faraway worlds, moons, cosmic formations, and alien landscapes. I looked on as he created his artwork using spray paint and props to mask off certain areas of the canvas paper he didn’t want overspray to hit. Each creation only took a few minutes to complete. And no two paintings were alike. I could have watched him all night! When we returned home from that long weekend, I decided to do some space paintings of my own.

Space art isn’t a new genre of art for me. I painted my first outer space painting as a young teen for an arts and crafts show I entered. My love of the iconic TV show Star Trek led me to paint the “Starship Enterprise” in orbit around some distant planet. The painting got a lot of attention at that small art show and later it sold. I wish I had a photo of it, but I was a young teen at the time and didn’t even think to do that. Besides, I was just so excited that someone wanted to pay for my painting!

Decades would pass before I did another otherworldly painting, and that space art painting was a commission. The painting consisted of a lunar landscape depicting Apollo 14’s mission to the moon and man’s first footprint left there. This sparked a renewed interest in creating more space landscapes to add to my repertoire of space art.

I’m a huge fan of the space program. I love the idea of visiting other worlds to see what’s out there. One could say I’m a bit of an adventurer at heart. As a matter of fact, to me being able to travel through the far reaches of the galaxy would be the ultimate in adventure. Maybe someday I will, but for today, I’ll have to settle for that adventure on the surface of my canvases in the space art paintings I create.

Artist Comments

I love great sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Gate; just about any story where space travel is involved. I should have grown up to be an astronaut instead of an artist, well, maybe. The bottom line is, I love adventure, and to me, traveling through the far reaches of outer space would be the ultimate in adventure.  It was only natural that I create a painting with the subject of space travel.

In addition to loving the idea of space travel, I am very interested in our national space program and the newly formed United States Space Force. I’m amazed at the many modern inventions we take for granted made possible because of space technology. Inventions like long-distance telecommunications, cellphones, water filters, invisible braces, scratch-resistant lenses used in our eyeglasses, and even memory foam used to make our mattresses. Other inventions include solar energy and the insulation used in our attics and walls and portable cordless vacuums, workout equipment, and CatScans. Even smoke detectors, cordless tools, and artificial limbs, to name just a few. Indeed space travel and exploration have created new markets and new technologies that have spurred economic growth and enriched our lives in many ways.

Lastly, I call this painting “…The Next Frontier” because I do not believe space exploration is our final destiny. We explore space; it is our next frontier, not our last. The last frontier is life with our Creator God in His kingdom for all eternity! The Bible has much to say about this topic. Check it out for yourself!

Check out this website for a list of those inventions.

Your Feedback

“When I was a little kid, I loved to draw spaceships during every idle moment. The adult caregivers eventually cured me of that allegedly bad habit. I know it doesn’t pay well, but please continue with your space-themed art. I think your painting is beautiful!” — Austin Morris, Space And The Great Beyond Also Aliens, Gab
