Artist Comments:

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have used sewing thread spun on wooden spools, but not so today. Nowadays, sewing thread comes on plastic spools.

Even though manufacturers are no longer making wooden thread spools, it doesn’t mean they have no value. If you happen upon some of these vintage sewing notions at a garage sale or flea market you may want to think about acquiring them. Or perhaps you already have an old sewing box stored in the attic that belonged to grandma or great-grandma full of wooden sewing spools, whichever is the case, don’t get rid of them. They still have some usefulness.

An advantage of these vintage thread spools is they last a long time and can be used in numerous other ways once their thread is used up. The wooden spool does not lose its usefulness just because it is no longer fulfilling its original function.

When I was a child, I remember playing with empty wooden spools. I strung them up on string and made necklaces with them. I also used them for furniture, among other things, when I played with my Barbie dolls.

Wooden thread spools can be used for various arts and craft projects. By using your imagination you could turn them into some beautiful artwork or something else that would give them some renewed purpose. Use them yourself or for a project your children could enjoy. Better yet, use them in a project that you and your children could enjoy doing together.

Artist Comments:

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have used sewing thread spun on wooden spools. The wooden spools you might find today are now 50+ years old and are considered antiques. In this day and age sewing thread comes on spools made of plastic and our own grandmothers, and most assuredly our mothers,  would have sewn their sewing projects using thread spun on plastic spools.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child back in the 60-70s, and as I got older I remember being taught how to sew by my grandmother. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I do remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for the right color of thread that I needed and finding wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It had become more economical for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool don’t throw it away, hang on to it, wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and the condition it is in.

Artist Comments:

I love flowers! I like painting them too, especially closeup and bathed in the warm sunlight. I’m always on the look out for a beautiful flower to paint and the King Protea flower is certainly one that inspires me.

About King Proteas

The King Protea (pronounced “prō – dē – a”) became the national flower of South Africa in 1976. This plant, named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his form at will, is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth dating back 300 million years. There are many varieties of protea, which can be found in South Africa, Australia, Asia and parts of South America.

King Proteas, who’s blossom resembles an artichoke, are the largest member of the protea family. They can grow as large as 3-4 feet tall with flowers 8-10 inches in diameter. The blossom has a huge white fuzzy center with pointy pink or white petals surrounding the center, along with leathery green petals that cradle the large heavy blossom and a thick stem which supports it.

Artist Comments

I named this painting Great-Grandma’s Teacup because in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans…well at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her up-coming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be absolutely ludicrous to do so as the set would most likely never be used except for holidays and perhaps maybe rarely even then.

For many Americans, I guess there is no longer any need for the loving memories that can be made from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions like our great grandmas did…or is there? And I guess it has been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when consumed from a cup made of fine china. And not failing to mention teacups are pretty and they are dainty, which also helps to make a special occasion just that much more special.

So what are you waiting for? Pull out great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to good use today. You’re not getting any younger.

I composed this painting from a reference photo of the sideview of a yellow cottage. Of course that photo had much more to show in it than what I present here. I thought it would be interesting to crop as much as I could out of the original photo and create an original composition that focused just on a few elements—the window, siding, picket fence and some flowers. I like how this turned out. I’ve done this technique before.  Below are the other paintings where I’ve done a tight crop.

My husband and I visited Devils Tower National Monument in the summer of 2016. This place is a unique geological rock tower which rises above the grassy plains of northeast Wyoming. At the time we were vacationing in Rapid City, South Dakota and since the tower was within driving distance of our hotel, we simply could not pass up the opportunity to visit this “one-of-a-kind natural wonder.”

Devils Tower could be seen from miles away as we made our approach to the national park. Upon arriving at our destination we drove through the 2.1 square mile park which surrounded the monument. We couldn’t help but notice the tower as it was the centerpiece of the park. It looked like a giant granite tree stump with a flat summit and fluted sides.

Devils Tower stands more than 867 feet from its base to the summit and measures approximately 180 feet by 300 feet at the top and is about a mile in circumference at the base. Around the base of the tower is a 1.25-mile self-guided hiking trail that provided us with spectacular close-up views of the tower. There was another much wider 3-mile trail that also loops around the tower, but we didn’t take that one. We spent a better part of the day there exploring and learning all we could about the tower before heading back to the hotel. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Why “Devils Tower” and Not “Devil’s Tower”?

Devils Tower was declared America’s first official national monument by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. Originally it was called “Devil’s Tower” with an apostrophe, however, somewhere along the way the apostrophe was dropped due to clerical error and was never corrected. To this day it is still called Devils Tower with no apostrophe.

This painting is one of several mini paintings I’ve composed.  I decided to do some smaller paintings as a way to attract a wider range of buyers and collectors for my art pieces. So I purchased a supply of 6×6 inch stretched canvases and started composing my mini paintings on them. I work on the mini canvases along side the larger paintings when I paint, thus working on both sized artworks during the same painting session.  I had no idea how much I would enjoy creating these miniature paintings until I started doing them.

Tropical sunsets are truly something special. The combination of the beautiful colors, the smell of the sea in the air, the feel of the sand beneath your feet and the sounds of the water splashing against the seashore. The rays of a setting sun have a way of making one reflect on the best things in life. At one time or another, just about everyone has surely marveled at the beauty of a sunset or sunrise with the splendor of all its red and orange colors. It may not have been on a distant tropical isle somewhere, it might have been right in your own backyard. Regardless, wherever you find yourself basking in the beauty of a sunset or sunrise, it is the best place to be.

This little painting was a fun one to do. I like doing small paintings like this one as it allows me to work on several art pieces in the same painting session. The Texas Horned Lizard, or simply “horny toad” as we called them when I was a kid growing up in west Texas, was a fun painting to do and it brought back lots of fond childhood memories. As children, my friends and I would see these little spiked critters all the time and often played with them for a while, then we would release them. As an adult I noticed they aren’t in abundance so much anymore. So I did a little research to find out why. This is what I discovered from my readings.

About 70% of the Texas horned lizard’s diet is made up of harvester ants. Through the years their population has declined by about 30%. Although, I’m happy to read, they may be making a comeback. The decline is due to the overuse of pesticides and the spread of nonnative fire ants. Both eradicate harvester ant colonies, destroying the lizard’s principal source of food. The Texas horned lizard is now a protected species, and, in Texas, it is illegal to take, possess, transport or sell them without a special permit.

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, issue August/September 2018, “Texas horned lizards once occurred throughout Texas, but now only a few populations remain. Efforts to move Texas horned lizards from one location in Texas to another, with the hope of establishing new self-sustaining populations in previously occupied habitat, are underway. Several Texas zoos are also working to develop colonies for reintroduction programs. RAWA (Recovering America’s Wildlife Act) funding would pay for “lizard factories” to help with reintroduction efforts.”

I shared a post about my findings on Facebook and received some interesting comments.

One friend whom I’ve known since my early teen years lives a small Texas town. She told me they have a horny toad festival every year called The Old Rip Festival. And it’s all about a horny toad named Old Rip! She sent me a link to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine website. It tells all about the legend, lore and legacy of Old Rip, a horny toad that supposedly lived for 31 years!

Another FB pal comments, “you still see these in West Texas and Panhandle. Fire ants haven’t taken over every inch of ground like they have here, and harvester ants are still there, so that helps with the “horny toads”. Hope they make a comeback here someday.”
