Artist Comments

Sometimes flowers can be tiny and yet still beautiful. God’s handiwork in nature continues to be an excellent source of inspiration from which to create my paintings. This dill flowers painting is a prime example. What attracts me to this composition is the feeling of abstractness one gets, but you quickly discover a close-up of some dill flowers when you look closer.

Dill (Anethum graveolens) is an aromatic annual herb with delicate, feathery green leaves and tiny, white or yellow flowers that blossom during the mid-summer. For centuries dill was revered for its culinary and medicinal properties.

Dill is in three places in the Bible (Isaiah 28:25 & 27 and Matthew 23:23) and ancient Egyptian writings. Once considered a sign of wealth, ancient Greek and Roman cultures used dill as currency. Today, dill is one of the most widely used spices of European and Asian cuisine.

I bought two dozen small 6″ x 6″ canvases one day simply because they were on sale. Yes, I know impulse buying isn’t always good because it can lead to buyer’s remorse. However, in this case, it worked out great. I discovered I enjoy doing smaller-sized paintings like this. The next thing I had to decide was what am I going to paint on them. Several ideas came to mind, and flowers were one of them. I realized flowers were a good choice since a single blossom would fit nicely on this size canvas. I’ve done several mini-sized flower compositions, and this Tiger Lily painting is one. This composition is a close-up looking at the center of the blossom.

“It’s lovely. Technically tho, it’s a “small painting” not a miniature. A miniature must be 25 sq. inches or less and 1/6th scale. You should try doing something like that, you paint so well. There are international miniature shows in Baltimore and Florida each year along with others in England, etc.” — Carol Michaletz, The Art Gallery, MeWe

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Vintage Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age, and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools, but not so much today. Nowadays, sewing thread comes on plastic spools.

Manufacturers are no longer making wooden thread spools, but that doesn’t mean they have no value. They still have some usefulness. One advantage of these vintage thread spools is they last a long time and can be used in numerous other ways once their thread is gone.

When I was a child, I remember playing with empty wooden spools. I strung them up on a string and made necklaces with them. I also used them for furniture, among other things, when I played with my Barbie dolls.

Wooden thread spools can be used for various arts and craft projects. Using your imagination, you could turn them into some beautiful artwork or something else that would give them some renewed purpose. Use them yourself or for a project, your children could enjoy. Better yet, use them in a project that you and your children could enjoy doing together.

This painting is part of a series called Great-Grandma’s Antique Sewing Thread. I call it “great-grandma’s” because we are now living in a modern age, and thread no longer comes on wooden spools. Our great-grandmothers would have probably used sewing thread spun on wooden spools.

The wooden spools you may find today are 50+ years old and are now antiques. Today sewing thread comes on spools made of plastic; and our grandmothers, and most assuredly, our mothers would have sewn their sewing projects using thread spun on plastic spools.

I remember playing with empty wooden spools when I was a young child in the 60-70s. As I grew older, my grandmother began teaching me how to sew doll clothes and other items. However, I barely remember thread coming on anything but plastic spools. I remember raiding my grandmother’s sewing box for just the right color of thread I needed, and I remember finding some wooden spools there.

Unfortunately, wooden spools met their demise back in the 1970s when manufacturers stopped using them to spin thread on. It was purely a business decision. It had become more economical for them to use plastic spools instead. If you happen to come across a vintage sewing spool, don’t throw it away; hang on to it. Wooden spools are antiques and do have some value. Just how much it is worth depends on how old the spool is and its condition.

I love flowers! I like painting them too, especially closeup and bathed in the warm sunlight. I’m always on the lookout for a beautiful flower to paint, and the King Protea flower is certainly one that inspires me. Its large beautiful blossom made it a perfect subject for this flower painting.

About The King Protea Flower

The King Protea (pronounced “prō – dē – a”) became the national flower of South Africa in 1976. This plant, named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his form at will, is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, dating back 300 million years. There are many varieties of protea, which can be found in South Africa, Australia, Asia, and parts of South America.

King Proteas, whose blossom resembles an artichoke, is the largest member of the protea family. They can grow as large as 3-4 feet tall with flowers 8-10 inches in diameter. The blossom has a substantial white fuzzy center with pointy pink or white petals surrounding the center, along with leathery green petals that cradle the large, heavy blossom and a thick stem that supports it.

Artist Comments

I named this painting Great-Grandma’s Fine China Teacup because, in this day and age of Starbucks, paper cups, and travel mugs, the art of drinking coffee or hot tea from fine china is quickly becoming a thing of the past for a great many Americans. Well, at least that is my perspective.

Here is a case in point. I read once about a young bride-to-be preparing for her upcoming wedding and how her mother coerced her into adding a set of fine china to her bridal registry. The young woman felt it would be ludicrous to do so as the china set would never get used except for holidays and perhaps rarely even then.

For many Americans, I guess there is no longer any need for the loving memories that come from pulling out the fine china and using it for special occasions like our great-grandmas did, or is there? And I guess it has been forgotten that hot beverages taste much better when consumed from a cup made of fine china. And not failing to mention, teacups are pretty, and they are dainty, which also helps to make a special occasion just that much more special.

So what are you waiting for? Pull out great-grandma’s (or grandma’s) fine china and put it to good use today. You’re not getting any younger.

I composed this painting from a reference photo featuring the side view of a garden cottage. Of course, that photo had much more to show in it than what I present here. I thought it would be interesting to crop as much as possible out of the original photo and create an original composition that focused just on a few elements—the window, siding, picket fence, and some flowers. I like how this turned out. I’ve done this technique before.  Below are the other paintings where I’ve done a tight crop.

I painted the Devils Tower in an oil painting after returning home from a trip with my husband to South Dakota in 2016.  During this trip, we visited Devils Tower National Monument. The monument is a unique geological rock tower that rises above the grassy plains of northeast Wyoming. At the time, we were vacationing in Rapid City, South Dakota. Since the tower was within driving distance of our hotel, we could not pass up the opportunity to visit this “one-of-a-kind natural wonder.”

We could see Devils Tower from miles away as we made our approach to the national monument. Upon arriving at our destination, we drove through the 2.1 square mile park which surrounded the monument. We couldn’t help but notice the tower as it was the centerpiece of the park. It looked like a giant granite tree stump with a flat summit and fluted sides.

Devils Tower stands more than 867 feet from its base to the summit. It measures approximately 180 feet by 300 feet at the top and is about a mile in circumference at the base. There is a 1.25-mile hiking trail around the tower base that provided us with spectacular close-up views from all sides. There was another much wider 3-mile trail that also loops around the tower, but we didn’t take that one. We spent a better part of the day exploring and learning everything about the tower before heading back to the hotel. All-in-all it was a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Why “Devils Tower” and Not “Devil’s Tower”?

In 1906, President Teddy Roosevelt declared Devils Tower America’s first official national monument. The monument was initially named “Devil’s Tower” with an apostrophe; however, somewhere along the way, the apostrophe got dropped because of a clerical error and was never corrected. To this day, it is still called Devils Tower with no apostrophe.

This monarch butterfly painting is one of several mini paintings I’ve composed.  I decided to do some smaller paintings to attract a broader range of buyers and collectors for my art pieces. So I purchased a supply of 6×6 inch stretched canvases and started composing smaller paintings on them. I work on the mini canvases alongside the larger paintings when I paint, working on both sized artworks during the same painting session.  I had no idea how much I would enjoy creating these smaller paintings until I started doing them.

Artist Comments

Sunsets in the tropics are truly something special. The combination of beautiful colors, the smell of the sea air, the feel of sand beneath your feet, and the sounds of the ocean splashing against the seashore. The rays of a setting sun have a way of making one reflect on the best things in life.

At one time or another, just about everyone has marveled at the beauty of a sunset (or sunrise) with the splendor of its red, yellow, and orange colors. It may not have been on a distant tropical isle somewhere; it might have been right in your own backyard. Regardless, wherever you find yourself basking in the beauty of a sunset, it is the best place to be.
