Christian Art Collection

The Christian Art Collection comprises paintings of a religious theme. God is very important to me and is a huge part of my life. I am very grateful to Him for my gift of oil painting and everything else He does for me. Through my paintings, it is my desire to communicate all the wonder and majesty of the great I AM. I attempt to achieve this through a painting technique called “realism”.

Realism in art is a style of painting which depicts the subject matter as it actually appears in real life. There is no attempt to artistically stylize or distort the subject matter in any way. Instead I spend a fair amount of time and effort paying attention to detail and creating an accurate depiction of life forms and objects, perspective creating the illusion of reality, good composition, lights and darks, and color and tone. However, I stop short of my paintings looking like a photo, but rather prefer to communicate a Christian message by representing God’s handiwork in nature through realism.

Vincent van Gogh is one of my favorite artists. I find his life and paintings to be so interesting. During his life he painted many works of art people aren’t even aware of. The painting he did of this church is one of his better known paintings.

Artist Comments: The Sea of Galilee a large freshwater lake located in northeast Israel, between the Golan Heights and the Galilee region. The Jordan River is its main source of water. The lake is approximately 13 miles long and 8 miles wide.

This painting is of the famous Bible place was inspired by my love of God’s word and readings about Jesus in the Bible. I love Israel because God’s chosen people live there. I have never visited Israel, however, I would love to go there someday. The painting was composed from a photo in the “Pictorial Library of Bible Lands”. The photographer, Todd Bolen, graciously gave me permission to use his photos for any of my Bible land paintings.

According to Matthew 4:13-22, this historic biblical location is where Jesus began His ministry and called His first disciples. This passage tells us Jesus left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. While walking along the banks of the Sea of Galilee Jesus called the first four of His disciples Simon called Peter, Andrew, James and John.

Other scripture references about Capernaum: Matthew 8:5, 11:23, 17:24; Mark 1:21, 2:1, 9:33; Luke 4:23, 4:31, 7:1, 10:15; John 2:12, 4:46, 6:17, 6:24, 6:59. You can easily look up these scriptures here.

Artist Comments: This painting is a religious themed landscape painting portraying the cross in silhouette against a colorful evening sky. It is not to be taken as the literal representation of the crucifixion of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Rather it depicts that moment in time just after the disciples took His lifeless body down from the cross.

The Holy Bible tells us about this momentous historical event throughout its pages. From Scripture we learn that Jesus Christ endured the crucifixion from approximately 9 A.M until 3 P.M. and that His dead body was removed from the cross just before sundown. Whereas, the four New Testament Gospels describe some kind of supernatural phenomena which occurred at the moment of His death.

From the four Gospels we learn…

  • The Gospel of Matthew account mentions an earthquake,  the opening of the saints tombs in the vicinity and the resurrected saints making an appearance in Jerusalem.
  • The Gospel of Mark reveals how darkness spread throughout the land and the temple veil being ripped in two.
  • The Gospel of Luke tells us Jesus was crucified with criminals and that the Roman soldiers mocked Him and cast lots for His clothing.
  • The Gospel of John describes how the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and that Jesus was crucified at Golgotha which means the place of the Skull.

Calvary At Sunset is part of a series of oil paintings called the Christian Art Series.
