Artist Comments

This painting has that shabby chic look about it. You know that old tattered look with a neutral background. Yet the grass and overgrown bush, along with a scattering of a few white wildflowers, indicate there is still life present there.

Shabby chic is a term given to a style of interior design where furniture and furnishings are worn or distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. This style of decor can be extended to the outside patio and garden as well.

A few years ago, I did a series of commission paintings for a gentle who loved Africa. (You can find those in “Past Work“. ) They included the landscape and wildlife of Africa. I really enjoyed doing them as it made me feel like was actually there on some kind of safari. From time to time, I will do another painting on Africa and this is one of them.

Economy Oil Paintings

economy oil paintingsAnnouncing an Economy Line of Oil Paintings by Teresa Bernard

ATTENTION art lovers and collectors on a budget! We are pleased to announce a new line of fine art by Teresa Bernard. Created for budget-conscious art enthusiasts, we call these artworks Economy Oil Paintings.

Economy paintings are a great way to adorn the walls of your home or workspace with one-of-a-kind works of art without breaking the bank.

All economy oil paintings are a standard size measuring 9×12 inches. This allows Teresa to buy quality canvas in bulk which helps to keep costs down. The canvas she uses is made of heavy-duty canvas panel boards and is constructed of primed canvas over a rigid, lightweight board. This makes them lighter, less fragile, and more affordable without sacrificing any quality.

Economic paintings are smaller in size, which means Teresa can finish a painting in much less time. It only takes her a few hours to complete an economy painting from start to finish, whereas much larger paintings can take up to several days to complete. This means more significant savings for you!

Be sure to bookmark this webpage so you can come back here often as more paintings will be added to this line on a regular basis.

Quality of Artwork

Teresa never sacrifices the quality of her art or the materials used to create these more economical artworks. She applies the same extreme care and concern for details, artistic expression, and skill to her economy line of oil paintings as she does to her compositions painted on larger higher priced stretched canvas.

Now anyone can own one or more of Teresa’s hand-painted oil paintings. In addition, every economy painting comes with a custom Certificate of Authenticity, as well as FREE shipping and handling inside the U.S.A.

Artist Comments

The beautiful Yaquina Head Lighthouse (pronounced “ya-queen-eh” by locals) is located on the Oregon coast just north of Newport and was built in 1872-73. The lighthouse is named after an almost-extinct American Indian Tribe of the same name.

This painting has almost a “worm’s-eye-view” of the famous Yaquina Head Lighthouse as the viewer looks up at it. I thought that was an interesting angle. At first, I hesitated to paint the lighthouse since I wasn’t sure I could get the angle right. However, I’m glad to have overcome my hesitation and decided to paint the beautiful lighthouse anyway. I love how it turned out.

I love autumn; it’s my favorite season of the year. There’s something so refreshing about the crisp cool air that follows after a hot summer. And all the beautiful fall colors always seem to brighten my day too.

I also love log cabins in a rustic setting like this one. A vacation cabin just like this one nestled somewhere away from it all would be great! Is there any wonder why I would do this log cabin painting?

I live out in the country, and scenes like this are commonplace. They are always a source of inspiration and provide me with something to paint. This painting was a fun one to do. While I was painting the fence post in a meadow of wildflowers, a similar painting came to mind that I had done some time ago. It had a fence post too. However, the fence post in that earlier painting was nestled in the snow. I named the painting “Fence Post in the Snow.”

Artist Comments

The most eye-catching feature of this painting is that big orange moon in the night sky silhouetted by an egret. Looking at it, one can easily daydream what it might be like to “fly away” to Earth’s only satellite and beyond. Sometimes I feel as if I should have become an astronaut instead of an artist.

The night sky is one of my favorite things. I love looking up at it to see the vastness of outer space, the faraway planets, the milky way along with all the stars and constellations, and of course, Earth’s moon in whichever stage it happens to be in at the time. I especially love seeing our moon shining so brightly it makes the night look like it’s daytime!

What Makes The Moon Appear In Different Colors?

A unique and beautiful feature of our moon is its ability to appear in different colors. In truth, the moon doesn’t really change color at all; it only seems to be changing color because we are viewing it through Earth’s atmosphere. As we view the moon, we look up through the various layers of our atmosphere and all the particles in it, such as dust, smoke, and pollution.

One other thing that affects the way we perceive the moon is its location in the sky. For instance, the moon often appears more yellow or orange when it is closer to the horizon. This is because the angle we see it through is a denser portion of Earth’s atmosphere. When the moon is in a higher position up in the sky or directly above us, we are looking through a much thinner layer of the atmosphere, causing it to be visible in its more normal color of silvery white or ash gray.

There is one more explanation that is more complex called “Rayleigh’s scattering.” This involves sunlight which is made up of a combination of different color wavelengths. When sunlight hits our atmosphere, Rayleigh’s scattering takes over and “scatters” the various wavelengths. Suffice it to say; this natural phenomenon causes the colorful sunrises and sunsets we get to enjoy every day. It is also responsible for making the sky look blue during the daylight hours and affects the moon’s color day or night. How this all works is fascinating.  Click here for more information on this phenomenon.

Artist Comments

This is a still life painting featuring boat fenders. Most people envision a bowl of fruit, a vase of flowers, or a figurine sitting on a table when they think of still life artworks. However, a still life can be composed of any inanimate object.

Sometimes I like to give myself a challenge when choosing a subject matter for my paintings. I found these fishing boat fenders tied to the pillar of a fishing pier very interesting because of all the different textures (wood pier, rusty chains, and rubbery boat fenders) present. I thought they would make an interesting challenge trying to paint all that texture. One does get a sense of texture from the detail in this artwork.

A boat fender is a type of bumper or cushioned buffer used to prevent a boat or other watercraft from bumping into a dock, pier, or another boat causing damage to its hull. They are often constructed of rubber, foam, or plastic, and they come in various shapes and sizes depending on their use.

This isn’t the only time I’ve taken on “texture” as a particular painting assignment for myself. Check out these paintings: Still Life with Tractor Tire and Barn Door with Horse Tack.

During the summer of 1999, my husband and I sailed his 36-foot sailboat up the ICW (Intra-coastal Waterway) from Florida to Virginia. Robert was in the military and was being transferred from Naval Air Station Jacksonville to Naval Station Norfolk. We saw many interesting sites along the waterway that offered many opportunities to take reference photos for future paintings. This painting of a beached shrimp boat along the ICW is from a snapshot taken on this trip.

About The ICW

The ICW is a 3,000-mile system of inland rivers, channels, and canals that runs along the eastern and southeast coast of the United States. This ribbon of navigable waters is divided into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Parts of the waterway are man-made canals, while other sections are natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds.

The ICW runs along the east coast from Boston, MA going south along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, TX. The waterway’s purpose is to provide a safe and navigable water route that can be traveled by both lightweight commercial barges and personal pleasure crafts to avoid many of the hazards of travel on the open sea.
