Artist Comments

Sometimes flowers can be tiny and yet still beautiful. God’s handiwork in nature continues to be an excellent source of inspiration from which to create my paintings. This dill flowers painting is a prime example. What attracts me to this composition is the feeling of abstractness one gets, but you quickly discover a close-up of some dill flowers when you look closer.

Dill (Anethum graveolens) is an aromatic annual herb with delicate, feathery green leaves and tiny, white or yellow flowers that blossom during the mid-summer. For centuries dill was revered for its culinary and medicinal properties.

Dill is in three places in the Bible (Isaiah 28:25 & 27 and Matthew 23:23) and ancient Egyptian writings. Once considered a sign of wealth, ancient Greek and Roman cultures used dill as currency. Today, dill is one of the most widely used spices of European and Asian cuisine.

Artist Comments

I bought two dozen small 6″ x 6″ canvases one day simply because they were on sale. Yes, I know impulse buying isn’t always good because it can lead to buyer’s remorse. However, in this case, it worked out great. I discovered I enjoy doing smaller-sized paintings like this. The next thing I had to decide was what am I going to paint on them. Several ideas came to mind, and flowers were one of them. I realized flowers were a good choice since a single blossom would fit nicely on this size canvas. I’ve done several mini-sized flower compositions, and this Tiger Lily painting is one. This composition is a close-up looking at the center of the blossom.

Your Feedback

“It’s lovely. Technically tho, it’s a “small painting” not a miniature. A miniature must be 25 sq. inches or less and 1/6th scale. You should try doing something like that, you paint so well. There are international miniature shows in Baltimore and Florida each year along with others in England, etc.” — Carol Michaletz, The Art Gallery, MeWe

I love flowers! I like painting them too, especially closeup and bathed in the warm sunlight. I’m always on the lookout for a beautiful flower to paint, and the King Protea flower is certainly one that inspires me. Its large beautiful blossom made it a perfect subject for this flower painting.

About The King Protea Flower

The King Protea (pronounced “prō – dē – a”) became the national flower of South Africa in 1976. This plant, named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his form at will, is one of the oldest flowering plants on earth, dating back 300 million years. There are many varieties of protea, which can be found in South Africa, Australia, Asia, and parts of South America.

King Proteas, whose blossom resembles an artichoke, is the largest member of the protea family. They can grow as large as 3-4 feet tall with flowers 8-10 inches in diameter. The blossom has a substantial white fuzzy center with pointy pink or white petals surrounding the center, along with leathery green petals that cradle the large, heavy blossom and a thick stem that supports it.

This small painting was a fun one to do. I like doing small paintings like this one as it allows me to work on several art pieces in the same painting session. Often, you will find me working on a large canvas and have several small or mini paintings like this one going at the same time.

I enjoy painting close-up views of flower blossoms. This close-up perspective gives one a sense of looking at the blossom under magnification and is a great way to highlight the uniqueness of each flower in God’s creation.

I love all flowers; however, the sunflower is one of my favorites. I love the bright sunshine-yellow petals and huge blossoms that resemble the sun. Most sunflower paintings are composed of the front of the blossom. However, the backsides of some flowers are just as beautiful, and the sunflower is certainly one.

Some Interesting Things About Sunflowers

    • The sunflower is a plant that is native to North America. Later it was introduced to Mexico and Peru. They can grow up to 6 feet tall and prefer dry, sunny places where their roots can dig deep into the soil.
    • When the plant is in the bud stage, it will face the sun following its movement across the sky from horizon to horizon. This movement allows it to get the maximum amount of the sun’s rays. After the flower has fully opened into the radiance of yellow petals, it will face only east. No one knows why it does this. One theory is it is possibly a defensive response to prevent the sun from scalding the seed pod during hot summer days.
    • The sunflower is often equated as a symbol of spiritual faith, worship, adoration, loyalty, and longevity, perhaps because it always seeks the “Light.”

I love all flowers, especially roses. I did this close-up oil painting of a yellow rose shortly after moving back home to Texas when my husband Robert retired from the military after 24 years of serving in the U.S. Navy. An old folk song kept coming to mind called “Yellow Rose of Texas,” so I knew I just had to do an oil painting of a yellow rose. I decided to do a close-up composition because of a fellow artist whose paintings I admire.

Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s flower paintings, I wanted to use the same treatment as she when I painted my series of flowers. Ms. O’Keeffe likes to paint her flowers enlarged by zooming in and focusing on the flower blossom or petals in many of her paintings. I admire much of her floral art and accomplishments as an American female artist.

To my knowledge, O’Keeffe never did paintings of roses. Instead, her favorite flower to paint seems to have been the Jimson Weed since she painted quite a few of those flowers during her lifetime. I’ve painted several roses, a sunflower, and a magnolia blossom using this enlarged flower technique. I’m optimistic there will be more flower paintings like this one in the future.

For more information on Georgia O’Keeffe and her flower paintings.
